A little background about me. My parents are Nigerian and came to the US in the early 60's. My Dad was a Diplomat and then went on to be a College Professor. My Mom was a Dean, so I come from a very educated family. The comments that's I've gotten from so called progressive people have literally left me speechless. One time I was having a conversation with some people, and then I started talking about what I might get my Dad for his birthday, when this guy acts all surprised and perplexed and looks at me confused and asks "Africans have birthdays?" Seriously, how do you respond to that? There are people that actually think Africa = Tarzan. Like wild animals roaming the streets, zero civilization etc.
Or the people that say I don't look or sound like the typical "black guy". When we talk about music tastes (I like jazz and blues primarily), since I'm 28, I'm supposed to love rap I guess, they are always shocked that I don't like black music. Someone needs to tell them that jazz and blues did not begin with Kenny G or Stevie Ray Vaughn. Or the people who tell me I speak really well. I mean, would they ever go up to a white guy who was college educated and make it a point to tell him "Hey guy, you know, you can string sentences coherently, I'm impressed." No they would not, but they make it a point to say it to me, as if it's an accomplishment to talk. Every black guy knows exactly what I'm talking about. If you speak like a human, you've heard this at least once. These weren't Southerners saying dumbshit like this, this was Northern, "progressive" liberal types, allegedly....lol.
So, much the same way, Obama, despite being half Kenyan, is that black guy that speaks really well to a lot of closet racists. He's so charming, they might even let him date their daughter! He's different from the rest of those doo-rag, sagging pants hooligans.
