WD is fine. There Green Drives however... are a no go generally.

Really? Thats pretty much all my WD drives. Admittedly they are all used just to hold media for streaming.

But really I find drive companies to be like phone companies/isps. Theres horror stories about all of them.

Maybe pick some cheaper (like slower but same model/brand) RAM Danoss. Pretty sure the speed of RAM makes minimal difference.

What ever you do do not get a WD Green HDD,

Really? My last 3 HDD's have been WD Green for storage. No issues aside from one I thought died after 4 years which just turned out to be a bad Win XP install, reused the drive again in the parents PC and it's still going 3 years later.

Currently have a 2TB one for all my media!

With the brief mention of building a new PC by cookie, I'm reminded to enquire on that very topic.

My current PC is becoming rather temperamental. Changing much of anything just points me towards building a new PC rather than upgrading anything. LGA1366 and triple channel RAM provide ordinary options, and my 5870 is proving more trouble than it's worth even in an idle state.

I don't game on the PC anymore, but I do edit photos and the occasional video. With this in mind, I don't need a ridiculous graphics card, but I do need a capable one as the GPU is being put to good use in current Adobe applications. I've chosen the 750 Ti as it seems to be the best value when looking at cost/performance/power consumption and having grown tired of AMD driver problems.
Did you have a plan for that 5870? Any idea if it's reference?

I'm seriously thinking of jumping to Team Green next upgrade, too. Unless I can score a cheap 7950 from somewhere, that'll be where I go. I need 3GB VRAM for starters, not that I'm horribly restricted by 1GB (5970/5850 combo, but the 5850 is non-reference) but it'd be stupid to get a 2GB card at this point in time.

Everyone has a story about why not to use WD or why not to use Seagate.

So true. I've used WD and Seagate and have had equally good/bad experiences with them.

I wasn't hoping for a battle over the HDD I chose, that's the least of my concern. It'll be for storage and there will be others of the same or similar type for backups. Speed is not a concern either for a drive where photos, documents and video files will be stored because once it's in RAM, I couldn't care less. The SSD is for programs, OS and the like where performance is desirable. I don't see the big deal.

Maybe pick some cheaper (like slower but same model/brand) RAM Danoss. Pretty sure the speed of RAM makes minimal difference.

The slower speed RAM price difference was rather small I thought, small enough to just grab the faster one. Unless I've skipped over a far cheaper one, which is quite likely.

XFX manufactured the card and I believe they use reference design. I can't say for certain, but it'd be a safe assumption. I have no plans for it currently, nothing more than storing it as a backup anyway.

but ever so delicious
I have an IPS display now.

THE COLOURS. IVE SEEN THE FUTURE.

Why did I stay on TN for so long.

I no longer need porn in my life.

I have the FFVII battle music playing on continuous loop in my head. I must say, this being my second go at the game, I'm enjoying it a lot more than I did the first playthrough.

I think the fact that I'm no longer waiting to be blown away by the GREAST GAEM OF ALL TIEM lets me just go with the flow. It still looks like the wrong end of a Japanese porn star and the controls are still a janky mess, but those expectations are baked into the experience now.

Whoops my mistake. Has RAM prices gone up? I remember spending less than $100 on 8GB back in 2012.

All good! The cheapest naked RAM is $185 so not a huge difference anyway.

I had no idea you didn't have an IPS already!

Welcome to the next level!

Best upgrade you can get visually. SSD is the next level system upgrade, IPS is the visual next level :)

probably won't but... maybe...

Ozbargain seem to be buying PC keys from a Russian store for $36.50.

I used Mexican VPN to buy from Origin getting the base game + season pass for around $50.

God damn it fuck this last few days >_<

Child poured washing powder through the powder bay of the washing machine, which seems to have resulted in a blockage on the way to the drum since water keeps trying to come in through the inlet but just gushes out the powder bay.

Fucking great.

My G930 headset has been playing up the last day or two. Randomly turning itself off until I plugged it into the charging station. Now it's completely dead even plugged in. Out of warranty, out of fucking pocket.

Fucking great.

>_<

(also my son has a giant patch on his forehead where he had a massive gash from day care and is covered in gigantic bites from mosquitos because he's inherited my allergy to mossie bites)

Imma finished bitching and moaning like a little bitch now >_<

Also I'm still sad I didn't buy that PS4 deal :/

Ah yep, looks like I missed that one and only saw the $199 cost RAM. I think the prices have risen, but not by a great deal the last time I looked. Thanks for the pointer.

I'm not sure if I've somehow managed to pick excellent components as the main point of contention has been my HDD of choice, which is funny considering I treat them as if they're going to fail at any moment. Well, I actually am sure I have not done this and am not 100% on the motherboard or the SSD I've chosen, but I guess I'll just roll with them. So, uhh... thanks AusGAF?

Oh Danoss is building a new computer.

What App are you using for video encoding?

Premiere Pro CC is where I'll do the editing, or maybe a little in Photoshop. I think these export via Adobe Media Encoder to actually do the job. I don't do this very often anymore, but they're what are used when I do.

Final cut pro is where the cool kids are.

It was, and then they released Final Cut Pro X. Fortunately Adobe had been working hard on Premiere Pro and made it very workable. With the synergy between many of the Adobe products now, as well as it being a very powerful editor, many of the advantages FCP held were no longer unique.

Funnily enough, Premiere Pro could open pre-FCP X projects while FCP X could not, upon release. I'm not sure if this has been addressed by subsequent updates, but it'd be very poor form and further alienation of their loyal user-base if Apple haven't. Maybe Apple has since made further improvements as FCP X had plenty of potential – many of the new features were incredible, but they ditched a great deal of what pro editors relied on to do their daily work. I haven't kept up with it since I ditched Mac soon afterwards for unrelated reasons.

Flappy boat!

Looking to claim asylum in Australia via boat? Not a problem! First you must guide your dangerously crude, over-crowded make shift boat through this never-ending maze of barbed wire guarded by the slogan spewing, fearsome glorious leader Tony Abbott. Upon reaching the end you’ll be free – it’s that easy! With that said, every time Tony Abbott curses at you with his magic catchphrase “stop the boats” the level increases ten fold. Now, if you get caught you’ll be sent off to Manus Island! Whilst there, you’ll be forced to work, threatened with violence, be at risk of sexual abuse or even tortured. Oh, you may also be locked away indefinitely. Good luck, we don’t have wimps guarding our borders!

Not sure if I want to laugh or feel disgusted.

The American version of Review is... kinda okay-ish? I enjoyed it for the most part but it doesn't quite have the tone of the original that really made it work. As a show in its own right it's pretty good but when comparing directly to the original version as, say, with their "addiction" reviews it falls pretty short.

Also tonight's Spicks and Specks was probably the best of the revival so far.

You know, I hardly use my Turtle Beach X41 anymore. I don't think it's as good as the Logitechs, but for quiet kid-friendly gaming, it should do the job fairly well I'd think.

Hell, I honestly can't remember when I last used them.

Ah ok. I don't know much about those apps and what they may use for video encoding. I know Intel CPUs have quicksync, that tends to be rather quick at encoding. See if they support that or Cuda so u can use the power of the nvidia card.

Build seems fine on this end. It really depends if you need the K variant or not, you can over clock it if you need more power for encoding.

Looks like media encoder 7.2 added support for cuda and opencl GPU encoding. So you can go with amd or nvidia.

If you guys feel like voting for Blow The Cartridge and helping this lil' Gazunta out that would be just lovely :)

And what fucking whizkid at Microsoft decided we don't need a hole for the pen on the Surface Pro 2? Drawing is the ONLY thing I want to do on this bloody thing and I left my pen at home. Maybe I need to buy ten spare pens and just leave some everywhere I could possibly be, like the way they used to leave pigs on remote islands for shipwrecked people to eat later.

Oh yeah video games I guess?

I'm a huge fan of the original. I think it's one of the funniest comedy shows around, and it's severely overlooked even within Australia.

The American version is pretty decent in its own right, but it just isn't dark enough to compare with the original. Still, as far as these remakes go it could have been much much worse. I still shudder at the memories of Coupling US.

Thank you very much for that, cookie.

CUDA (and OpenCL) support makes it easy to choose a good GPU. The number of CUDA cores versus cost and power consumption led me to the 750Ti, plus anything lower than that was lacking in video out options to run dual monitors.

My biggest worries were the motherboard and SSD as I've been out of the loop for a while. If they're okay, then I'm happy.

It's nifty that the cost difference for the K version of CPU is rather negligible, so even if I weren't to overclock, there's the option to do so at a later date. The cooler I have currently is an earlier version of this Noctua NH-U12S, which came with 2 fans if the user wanted to set them up in push/pull. When finding that link, I discovered they sell mounts to use the old coolers for $9, so there's a saving. Unless there's been a great leap forward in CPU air cooling, is it safe to say that's a sensible choice?

I'd love to go water cooled, but it seems that it is a pricey thing to do if you want an effective solution. Unless the cheaper options have improved, it seems the performance is roughly equivalent to air and thus unreasonably inflating the PC cost, unless someone just wants to say their PC is water cooled. There's no need for a high-performance solution in my situation, but I'd love to one day fulfill the dream of having a silent PC.

Thanks for responses about my work.

I have Dark Souls 2 Black Armour Edition from JB for 89 abbottbucks. Having it now makes it a good price for now.
