D&D or Board Games or IRL Role Playing or Furry or Capcom fan?
???

The first three (technically two of them are the same thing) are predecessors to the electronic games discussed on these forums. Aside from being fun in their own right, they are also design tools used in prototyping these games. For shame! Allow me to show you the door...

AusGAF passport denied!

Do you remember Ruffles crisps?

Oh, I know what they are... there just wasn't an option for not playing either of those things.

I supposed D&D because it was pretty much lifted to make KoTOR... so, that?

I downloaded FFVII off PSN because of reasons and am now playing it on the PSP. Can anyone tell me what the best scaling mode for playing PS1 games is on this thing? I mean, it looks okay to me zoomed, but I don't want to lose any of the image.

Custom by far. Hope you got the NTSC version to start, but set a custom screen size so that the top and bottom of the graphics touch the top and bottom of the screen and then stretch the left and right sides of the picture out a little bit more than they should be, but not so much that the characters start to look stretched.

There is a case to be made for those chips from the 90s where you got the packet of extra flavouring and shook it through the pack being better than red rock deli. But that case would be wrong.

I should really get back to finishing FFVII again.

I've been floundering around on the last disc of FFIX for way too long now. The boss kicked my ass first go so I've just been grinding so my party can stand a chance. I've given myself until FFX HD release day to beat it.

No. The same thing would have happened before. Just because there's an R18 category doesn't mean everything is allowed with no restrictions. After all don't we also come down hard on porn with sexual violence.

And I'll admit that the whole abortion mini game puts me right off. Really not surprised people would be unhappy about that.

No, before they at least had the justification of having 15+ as the highest rating so I could understand the things they refused to classify. The system is now worse.

I usually played PS1 games in a 4:3 box.

More importantly though, you need to get Tactics Ogre psp if you haven't already!
Tactics Ogre is in the mail as we speak.

I can't find Crisis Core or Castlevania Chronicles in stock anywhere though, which makes me sadface.

I can't work out how to stretch the screen. Does that require an analog nub?

Was thinking of with a street fighter or Simpsons. I quite liked playing the Lotr one but that's way too much. Will check them out, do they have a classifieds section? I had a look but didn't sign up. I guess I'll have to keep an eye out.
They have a wanted section and a for sale one, but they'd also be open to general "what should my first machine be?" threads :)

How's your pinball machine going. Getting as much use as you expected?
More. Probably play 3-4 games a day on it on average.

Get yourself lots of machines via vpforums.org, try out as many games as you can (or at least, ones you've heard of). They may not play much like the real thing, but they'd give you an idea if you like the flow/rules/sounds/lighting of the game. You might even wind up with a game from the 80s you'd like and have never considered (and subsequently pay a lot less).

Also, LotR and Simpsons will be quite expensive w/ Simpsons (assuming you mean the newer one) at least $5k and LotR even higher (I'd imagine).

Ubisoft would've probably shied away from this line: "Implied sexual violence that is visually depicted, interactive, not justified by context or related to incentives or rewards is not permitted."

They had me at procedurally generated worlds and all that COLOUR.

The new Halfbrick game has been announced!

Bears? I'm in.

True Detective is now over. What a ride. I can't see how season 2 will live up to this.

Have they confirmed a second season? I am yet to start this show, but I'm keen.

How long is The Last of Us? I'm at the part where
you encounter a lot of people fighting and not much zombies
and I feel like I'm about halfway.

My missus played it and said there are
four seasons
, so that might give you an idea of how far through you are.

Speaking of pinball machines, the wife and I sunk a stupid amount of time into the new Wizard of Oz table we spotted at Time Zone Surfer's Paradise this weekend. Huge full colour LCD screen, an amazingly colourful table, and tons of flippers and areas to explore. It's also crushingly hard! But for some reason the wife just kept returning to it, determined to show it who's boss. That was ace.

We also played the new Batman arcade game which is basically Burnout Paradise with guns. Or Crash HQ 2 with Batman. I'm not sure which. I really liked it. I'm more interested in playing that than a new Arkham thingy.

There was a huge 8 player Daytona set up with hydraulic chairs and cameras which was fun to play but man the monitors looked like someone hooked up the Saturn version to a widescreen TV with composite cables, even I thought it looked too retro.

Funny how half the arcade is by Eugene Jarvis' company. Feels good :)

We won enough points for me to buy a pack of Mario figurines with Mario, Donkey Kong and Toad. Yay, more useless crap for me to hoard!

I thought it was confirmed, but I'm not sure if it's official official. The writer has been talking about his progress writing the second season. It's pretty remarkable that a single guy wrote the entirety of the first season, and he's doing it the same way for the second.

Nice idea on the vpforums. That's a decent anount of games, I'm nowhere near that keen. More of something pretty to put in the corner and play when people come round, but you never know it could become an addiction.

Yeah the Lotr is 8k (give or take) so way too much. Was looking at the 90s Simpsons one, but again that's not cheap anyways.

You mean Chase HQ? Loved that game as a kid.

*shamefully hands in retrogaming badge*

Yeah that's the one. The sequel AKA Special Criminal Investigations also let you shoot at other cars so that's where the connection was for me.

That's ok you were just thinking about Crash Bandicoot ;), got a scoop to share? :p

One day I'll tell a Crash Bandicoot story :)

Really am kicking around the idea of doing a stupid comic series about my stupid adventures in the stupid games industry. I think some people might be interested in it, maybe, sorta?

I love Trenches but none of the six or so people who make / made that comic ever worked in game development, so I'm hoping I could bring *something* new to the concept.

Edit: Actually, that's not entirely true. Mike and Jerry obviously worked on their RPG series for a long time, but I'm mainly thinking about full time game development.

SHOTS FIRED.

The thing that fascinates me the most about that strip is ownership. The three people who are given (c) credit on every strip haven't worked on it in ages. Maybe it's a work for hire thing?

Hmmm Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze for $59 from Target. Should I or shouldn't I?

Do it

I'd recommend Donkey Kong for solo and 3D World if you plan on playing with other people. 3D World while good in single player takes a really long time to get going. I wasn't a big fan of most of the pre-post-game stuff.

Gaz, do it.
The Brittas Empire in comic form

it could not be less funny than Trenches, so you wouldn't have to aim that high.
aim higher plz

any other Ausgaffers venturing to GDC this year?

Bastard. Glad you enjoyed it though! /jelly
(pretty sure that's the only one on location in Australa, damnit)

Bastard. I think it's by the guys who did Hydro Thunder, so stands to reason that it's good. I'm just surprised that it's by Raw Thrills and isn't either Generic, Big Buck Hunter-related or a redemption machine.

Funny how half the arcade is by Eugene Jarvis' company. Feels good :)
Shame that also entails the BBH franchise :( BTW You'd be wise to check out an interview with Eugene Jarvis on TOPcast (a pinball podcast from a number of years ago). Focuses mainly on his adventures in pinball (obviously) but covers plenty of other stuff, too. He did work on my High Speed :)

Hey, maybe you could do a BtC on a "classic" pinball machine, or at least a generic one?

SHOTS FIRED.
Sounds like you have a name for the comic already.

Lemme think about some "family-friendly"(ish) games for you to chuck on that people would enjoy and are cheapish... hmm.

Fish Tales (simple enough rules, fun voices/sounds, flapping fish on top of backbox)
Revenge from Mars/Star Wars: Episode One (newer "Pinball 2000" form factor with a smaller footprint, have video, easy enough to play... at least, SWEP1 is. RfM is supposed to be great as well, though)
World Cup Soccer (might be a little pricier than the others mentioned, but good family theme that plays nicely and nice, exciting voice work)
Terminator 2 (great game, made a lot so could pick up a bargain on this)
High Speed/The Getaway (High Speed 2) (escape from police, kinda blokey but easy enough gameplay concepts to grasp. Big red spinning light on backbox)
White Water (won't be *that* cheap, but might get lucky. Whitewater rafting theme, crazy fun but might be a little complicated for guests)

As far as prices go, around $2-3k would net you a Fish Tales, Getaway or High Speed (with HS being cheapest, but from the 80s), while the rest could be had from around $3k up to $4k depending on condition/seller. Obviously can get even higher depending on condition, but those are solid ballpark prices for reasonable nick games.

Rocky and Bullwinkle, Jurassic Park and Batman are all meant to be solid Data East machines (with JP being the pick of the bunch) which I believe all go for around $3-4k as well, with JP starting to increase in price recently (and is the better machine).

Hopefully that at least gives you a starting point for virtual tables to suss out :)

Have they confirmed a second season? I am yet to start this show, but I'm keen.

A second season has not yet been confirmed. HBO is certainly interested, which is unsurprising given how popular the show is and the audience only continued to grow as the season progressed. They are waiting for Nic Pizzolatto to turn in scripts before giving season 2 the green light. That's a fair ask as it will be a new story, a new cast and a new setting.

I like the anthology format they've chosen and hope they're able to pull it off successfully, it's something I'd like to see more of, if done well. It's tiring to consistently see the model where popularity is found and the show is milked for all it's worth as a response, often overstaying its welcome. I've long been a fan of series where the story was planned from the very beginning and had been plotted and paced accordingly.

Comics, anime and live-action TV shows have done it successfully. TV mini-series are the only instances I can recall that have been enjoyable – American Horror Story has tried this, but that show is best forgotten. True Detective looks to be an extension of the mini-series by fitting within a theme. It's a model with a bright future and plenty of potential, all that's needed are some daring and talented individuals to lead the way.

On True Detective, I've got something that I'm sure at least one person here will understand and enjoy.

But that is the point. They increased the age, but the items remain mostly the same. Hence, worse than before. No change to what is allowed, but an increase of the age at which it is allowed. Increasing the age at which things were allowed is fine by me, but not changing the allowed things or the system to make it more objective are failures and make the system worse. Before everyone was treated like kids because there was no way legally to treat people as adults. Now adults are legally treated as kids were not long ago.

Re: Second season:
Good to see. Variety was reporting it as already renewed this afternoon, as well, in one of their articles. Just need to see that press release.

Also, love the pic :)

My co-workers and I expect to be out of a job at the end of the financial year because we expect to find out tomorrow that we didn't get funding.

I had been working there for five and a half years between work placement, volunteering while I had another job and then work for the dole, and just recently they applied for funding to employ me.

Wow, thanks guys for the show of support, I'll revisit this concept once Super Blow The Cartridge is done and see what the next project I take on for this year will be. So maybe this one has some legs!

But shotsfired.com is already taken :/

Oh man, I had no idea that was the only Wizard of Oz table in Australia - I would have taken photos / video if I thought it would be of interest to people.

Clive, oh man yes that's a good point of reference :p

Only one *on location*. I believe there are a fair few more in people's collections, but I don't know exactly how many. Take photos next time you're in the area if you can, but don't stress if you don't. I'd prefer to hear impressions than see photos :)

Target also has Infamous for $70 Death Jnr! Just need to go in and pre-order as it's currently $80 in-store and they knock $10 off for pre-ordering apparently.

Titanfall on X1 is $78 at Big W.

Hmmm Super Mario 3D World and Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze for $59 from Target. Should I or shouldn't I?
Depends if you loved the previous entries. If so and you want more, then think about buying them.

Thought some of you might be interested to know that Kogan just sent out an email saying they're selling PS4's for $499. Looks like you might have a bit of a wait until they even ship them out, but I imagine that's the case with most stores right now.
Extra $30-40 for shipping though :(

WHY DIDNT I BUY THAT $440 DSE DEAL >_<

Downton Abbey kinda does the mini-series thing too. Different time periods for different series. Kinda. :/

Also lol. Was hoping it was ready to watch when I got home! Been a long time since the Cronenbergs!

If I'm going to get one it would probably be Mario so I could play with my girlfriend... but then I'd need a pro controller, because she hates the Wiimote and doesn't find the Gamepad comfy. Anyone know where I can get one of those cheap? Too bad my Waverbird doesn't work with Wii U.
