AusGAF 11 - Twice the price, a year late but still moving forward

I sat down last night and tried to work out why my credit card bill was way higher than I expected last month :/

Just starting my collection now so it won't be pretty at least intially. I've told myself I don't want anything outside of the smash bros roster so at worst. At worst that's like 50 amiibos. I looked at the entire cast of Animal Crossing and that doesn't look appealing to me at all which is good! I think

Yeah, I'd probably be going mostly shmups as well, plus Puzzle Bobble and the Metal Slug titles. Not much for fighters. And maybe have it somehow switchable with a CPS2 because I find the games across both are very similar. Need that Alien vs. Predator.

If you ever have questions, feel free to ask via PM or in this thread (or in the Pinball Arcade thread, it's basically an unofficial IRL pinball thread anyway). I have two in a single bedroom unit, so don't discount having a machine inside! If you're having problems justifying it to the missus, just tell her they very rarely, if ever, lose value and right now will probably make money in the long run if you buy right.

Hell, the only thing stopping me buying more is my living arrangement. Once my girlfriend and I sort out a house, I'll be borrowing from my friends' 40+ collection ;)

Probably! I think I even actually still have a Saturn kicking around somewhere, but I have a feeling that's a pricey game, yes?

Yea, I actually loved all the NeoGeo games. I still get kinda bummed that I had to sell it all. Oh well, such is life. I had such a big collection of CPS2, Naomi, Atomiswave and NeoGeo games. However, I still have my Original Xbox which is modded and has Mame on it. I used to fire that up more often then using my cab, just for the convenience factor. Kinda silly when you think about it, but thats how I get my fix now a days.

Haha, I don't think the missus would mind if I get a pin or arcade cabinet. She seemed to think it would be a good idea, and you are right they don't loose value at all. I actually sold my cab and most games for a profit. If its one thing that keeps value its arcade games.

Could you keep them in a garage 24/7 though? Would there be any issues with them being in the Melbourne Cold? Have 0 room in the house for a pin. Besides the bedroom :p

Yeah I won't be grabbing any of the Animal Crossing ones aside from Nook (of course). I think we are pretty much done from here on out aside from the trinity of Dr Mario, Bowser Jnr & Oli. Not a fan of the 8bit Mario.

My phone just died.

Any suggestions for cheap unlocked Android phones? I've seen some Samsung Pocket Neos going for relatively cheap prices but I'm not sure how powerful that phone is. All I'm looking to do on it is check emails, Skype, Facebook, listen to music and other basic things like that.

I use a cheap THL phone. Dual sim, quad core, 1GB RAM, etc. Better than my old Galaxy S2 and was only $99.
I don't plan on ever spending more than $99 on a phone now. This thing is really good, only downside is the shitty camera.

I just had an old person moment.

I'm going to guess your phone is basic. Kids these days love to call shit basic.

Probably some PS3 games, some retro stuff. Although I'm sure I shouldn't spend too much money.

I'm not at all attached to my PS3 games, so the price will be right! I've even got a couple of JP only games like EX Troopers.

I'd rather sell stuff to Gaffers than random riff raff.

Kissed a mod for a tag; liked it
Seems like it's a bad day for Ausgaffers phones. Dropped my phone on concrete when I got home from work and now I have a lovely spiderweb design on the screen. Fml.

It was more of a banal kind of "wow, carrying these kind of functions around in your pocket can be a considered basic, I guess that's true, but wow" moment. A pretty boring sort of thought to have, but I had it and it was mine.

I had a nokia analogue phone for work around '93. It was a phone and that's more or less it. Among its extra features were the display of the the current time and turning whatever was playing on your car stereo into a dubstep remix just before the phone rang.

years later, getting those little replacement antenna things that lit up when you held them near a phone was both cool and scary.

Haha, how wikipedia lists the basic functions of my first mobile:

The Nokia 2110 was a cellular phone made by the Finnish telecommunications firm Nokia, first announced in 1994. It is the first Nokia with the Nokia tune ringtone. [1] The phone has only basic functions like SMS send/receive, and lists 10 dialed calls, 10 received calls and 10 missed calls.

I remember calling one of those 1800 numbers and you choose like a cool banner thing that replaces the "Nokia" text at the top of the home screen - I got charged like 2.50 for a dragon ball one lol

Also, fuga ringtone!

I remember using a program that converted midi files to ringtones and then used a dialup connection to transmit them to your phone.

We've been going through a lot of old/basic nokias at work lately, just clearing them, testing to see if they still work etc. The amount of porn people manage to fit on 1-2gb is terrifying, even more terrifying is how much they manage to record with something like 1.3mp cameras. Also ascii sms porn.

Also got my new keyboard today, deck hassium pro blue switches/orange led's. Feels so much more solid to type simply out of the construction of the damn thing compared to my old das.

The use of Windows Phones is the only element of House of Cards that breaks my suspension of disbelief.

These manipulative, selfish, power-hungry individuals go to extreme lengths in pursuit of their goals - blackmailing, using hackers, murder, yet the moment I see some senator or journalist receive a call on their Windows Phone BAM, I'm reminded I'm watching a work of pure fantasy.

Windows Phone, at least, Windows Phone 8, is a fine O.S., in fact it's quite a good one. The main issue with Windows Phone is lack of app support.

I remember when polyphonic ringtones were the shit in year 6/7. And colour photos!

This right here!

I upgraded my 3310 - which was amazing because you'd be able to look up guides online to make ringtones, to a blue sony Ericsson that came with a plug in camera, the polyphonic ringtone blew my mind, the sound was so good and lets not forget the photos looked amazing
they didn't they looked like a stamp sized pixel

In regards to phone horror stories, I once owned a Windows Phone for a whole year.

It was a 925.

If you like having no apps, and cancer, it was an excellent phone.

Windows phones are forever ruined on me, we all have the same nokia as a work phone and they all have the same ringtone, I get uncomfortable whenever I hear it in public. Worst fucking thing. Keyboard is also a piece of shit

My job agency closed at the start of the month as it didn't get continued funding. Because of this change, they say I will need to do Work for the Dole at a different place than I have been. Because the agency doesn't have where I work(ed) as a provider. And to be added as a provider they need to so a risk assessment and stuff, which they didn't want to do but might do.

I have a big connection to that job. I have worked (uni work placement then voluntary and then wftd) for the organisation for almost 7 years, though for the past year in a different department after the previous lost its funding. They were going to hire me before they lost the funding. There has been major progress as well...and then this job agency essentially fired me from there. I would volunteer there again uninterrupted if the job agency didn't require me to be elsewhere during work hours.

I haven't told my work yet as I found out today and the people to tell weren't at their phones. I will tell them tomorrow. I expect my work will contact the job agency to try to be a new provider and organise something. One of the workers at the agency said that it could happen. But my case worker was saying nope nope nope. But, he also said the jobs are ones that some department provide...so it isn't up to him. I am hopeful. And maybe if not then I could go to a different job agency that could. There is a lot more I am unsatisfied with this provider for so it wouldn't just be over this.

They don't have a work placement they think it suitable so I will be at the job agency 9am to 3pm each day doing resume training (etc) to meet the hour requirements while they try to find one...

I thought it might motivate my work to hire me as they are losing me, but nope the funding probably doesn't line up.

No way! Coincidence much. I dropped mine today too and made my already horrendously cracked screen even worse!

any ausgaffers have any suggestions on decent places to buy cat scratching posts from?

battery world any hardware shop? If a pet shop sells something ridiculously expensive, go to bunnings mitre10 and buy a post, some nails, some carpet or something and wrap that fucker (not the cat) up.

I would if I just needed something for her to scratch. But the new place is tiny and I'm concerned for her mental health!

Found one online for 120$ that's about 2m tall and has sevrral platforms and shiz.

So, element14 has fucking insane shipping times. Bought a Raspberry Pi 2 last night at 3:20pm (with wifi dongle and free case) and it was at my desk at work this morning. Now I'm a little pissed because I don't have a microSDHC card to use in it (for the moment). Boo-urns. Just hope there's a random one kicking around the office somewhere... I work in IT, this should not be impossible.

I don't think there'd be a *major* issue, as long as it doesn't get too damp or anything in there. I think it's only rapid temperature fluctuations (as in, day to day) that machines would have hassles with. More than the electronics, just need to think how wood might behave.

PS. One of mine is in my bedroom ;) But that was before I met my girlfriend... whoops!

And that Spacey plays a Vita in one of the earlier episodes (no spoilers pls, I haven't seen all of S1).

Is that a Playstation Vita?
Er, yeah. Beaten like a whatever.

Daughter has been bed-ridden with bad flu for the past 4 days, so while I was out buying more panadol for her, I bought a 3DS and Pokemon X. Please tell me of the mistakes I made in this purchase. And possibly whether I need to get another 3DS so I can also play it.

You've started her Pokemon addiction, well done.

Thanks. My ideal job is admin work in mental health and community services work (which is what I've been doing), but admin work or community work are fine on their own are good.

Yup. Won't boot otherwise. Don't think it really matters what speed/size etc., but you definitely need one. I think the best you can do is put some files on an SD card to tell the rest of the OS to boot off USB or whatever. But it needs that initial SD cardy bit :/

Do you want the scratching post as a cat-minder during the day or just somewhere they can hangout when they're on their own?

Just somewhere she can hang out on her own and scratch, but also just the climbing the towers stuff, she likes to jump around, and there's not much for her atm except window sills.

What does your cat scratch without a post being available?

My current cat ignores the scratching post and only scratches on two things, some textured dining chairs (cats love scratching textured fabric) which I've now covered and a small $10 rectangular block of corrugated cardboard I got from the RSPCA store. But he loves to chill on the too-small half-pipe thing up top.

But if I'm not around, he just sleeps all day or looks out the window. So long as I give him a little attention where he can chase a piece of string for about 15 minutes a day, he's happy. Besides, if they're a climber, they will climb.
