Buying a new video card on Friday, but not many benchmarks cover 2560x1600 so I can't decided between a GTX 570 or a HD6970...

My games arrived from Ozgameshop.com!! Took 3 weeks, but I got Uncharted 2, Bioshock 2 and Assassins Creed 2.

Christmas postage sucks. I've had games from there delivered within 5 working days during more quiet periods.

My 8800GT from 2007 finally died and I'll be picking up a 460 later this week to get me by until a proper upgrade. Will chuck it in tandem with a better nVidia card and use the 460 as the PhysX card.

Pretty sure the 6970 has the edge at 2560x1600. The HardOCP review covers that res but it's an extremely annoying review because it doesn't put the 570 and the 6970 on the same graph, so you never get a direct comparison because they always use different settings to get "highest playable settings", nevermind that "playable" is always 30fps and never 60fps. Then in his conclusion he goes on to say that the 6970 beats the 570 easily, even though his own numbers don't show that and he never bothers to directly compare them. Man that review gave me the shits.

Anyway, long story short, the 6970 is supposed to be slightly better at higher res. I got a gtx570 because I'm not going over 1920x1200 any time soon, and the 6970 was at stupid prices at the time. It's not so bad now, but it's still ~$50 more for the 6970.

Going from ATI to Nvidia has been a funny experience. The driver has crashed on me three times, once was a BSOD. I hardly ever had driver problems on ATI.

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.

Have fun! If you've got an iPhone, I recommend the talking phrasebook app by CoolGorilla.

Where'll you be going?

Just all around Tokyo, Chibi and all the nerdy spots. Gonna bullet train it to the snow one day.

I'll try that app!

Review of Japanese toilets incoming?

Well I got a GTX 570 today, but not gonna pay for it till Friday. It's awesome having a mate who works at a PC store :D

Gonna play some games tonight on the 4870x2 then chuck the GTX 570 in and hopefully get blown away.

Toto make the best toilets. You'll see them everywhere.

Also, if you do the onsen experience anywhere, be prepared for the possibility that small children will likely see your wang - up to a certain age, they're allowed in both male and female baths. Nude communal bathing is really weird at first, but you get over it after about a minute.

Make sure you go to a maid cafe in Akihabara. I recommend the @Home Cafe. It'll creep you out, blow your mind and generally make you feel just a little bit dirty - so awesome.

Also, from one gamer to another, never walk past a Super Potato - trust me on this.

I go to Japan almost yearly but I still have yet to go to a maid cafe. Sure I go to Akihabara to check out games, manga and other nonsense but I just can't muster up the courage to enter those cafes.

The thing that shocked me about aki, was how much porn there is.

Go into a store, first floor washers and dryers, second floor vacuum cleaners and kitchen appliances, third floor wall to wall porn.

^^^^

Thing that shocked me was that most stores don't open until about 11am. Wasted most of my "his" morning that way (we divided our time in Tokyo into "his" and "her" time - a lot of "her" time was spent in Harajuku, "his" in Akihabara).

They're not sleazy, I promise. The one my fiance and I went to looked like the inside of a day care centre. True, it was mostly lonely Tokyoite guys, but there was a table full of girls and a family there with a little kid as well.

I was in Akihabara for about 35 minutes in the pouring rain with 3 people who didn't want to be there. I travel alone next time.

I also had to look up what a maid cafe was just now, doesn't seem as dirty as I expected haha.

My favorite cafe was the Aki cat cafe, where instead of maids you had actually (non cosplay) cats.

That was pretty awesome. When I was there it was filled with businessmen pretty much. That made me happy.

Yeah it's kinda sad since it wasn't always like that (as all the elite nerds will tell you). What sucks is that the Akiba equivalent in Osaka is becoming the same as well.

Edit:

Yeah, I've always known that it's done tastefully and all for "fun" but still...

Part of the reason why I don't go is because I usually have to go to Akiba on my own since I'm there with family. I don't really want to be seen as the lonely otaku dude paying his weekly visit to his favourite maid:lol

LittleBigPlanet 2 ordered from dvd.co.uk for £35.55, or around $55 ... about half what it'll be on the shelves in stores here. Yeah, fix that with the frickin GST, productivity commission!

There's nothing about Japan that doesn't sound mad fun and/or ridiculous. Even being on the receiving end of a 'Baku gaijin' slur from one of the locals would have a memorable novelty to it.

I'm desperately waiting for our plasma in the lounge room to blow up. It's 7 years old, and SD :lol

haha I hope my plasma doesn't blow up, it would take me a whole year to save for a replacement.

There's a family out joyriding in my station wagon at the moment, they left me the keys for their much nicer car as collateral (is that the right word?), contemplating a border run.

Evlcookie Pro PC User tip:

Just because Sata drives are meant to be hot swappable, that doesn't mean they all are. Turn off your PC before deciding to plug in the power for a hard drive, Otherwise you might blow a cap and kill your 2TB drive.

Fucking hell I'm beginning to regret going Crossfire with my PC. Dual 5850s can run Crysis amazingly but bog down when running NFSHP and even crash when trying to run Dead Rising 2 (two games that hardly punish ANY system). Fucking over it.

You disabled it right for NFS and DR2? Crossfire isn't worth it due to driver issues / compatibility most of the time anyway. If you can work around it and just disable it when needed you should be fine.

Still one extra step I was hoping to avoid! I have an app to load different GPU profiles/settings (Radeonpro) but still tinkering with it so that CFX will disable properly.

Still, the games that are programmed properly (and are more reliant on the GPU... Dirt 2 didn't see much improvement on my Q9550 :( ) look batshit insane. Like I said, Crysis was fucking mind-blowing.

Interesting. Pity they don't seem to have the collector's edition.

I NEED that Sackboy plushie and I'm not sure I can wait for international shipping on the game. I'm prepared to pay EB's $108 price for the game. Will probably pre-order tomorrow and hope that somebody puts up a better price by the release date so I can get EB to price match.

London is a bit dumb like that. You can't walk 10 meters without stepping past a Pret a Manger, an Eat or a Caffe Nero. Also, no fucking bins anywhere.

Repost from PC thread in Gaming

"Every game I'm throwing at the new GTX 570 is running perfectly.

I tried Mafia 2, Borderlands, BFBC2 and STALKER: CoP and they all ran great maxed out.

The cars in Mafia 2 look amazing, BFBC2 is incredibly smooth and pretty, STALKER blew me away when I was using my flashlight and I can now run Borderlands with shadows and everything else turned on.

The jump from 4870x2 (CF disabled so 4850) to GTX 570 is huge. Downloading Crysis on Steam atm so I can really work the new card!"

I with ya man, I want the costumes as well.

And yeah I don't trust those uk sites anymore because they just take forever to arrive.

The countryside in Japan is freakin creepy. Would not recommend visiting - similarly the folk tales are quite fucked up.

Also, the Sackboy plushy is awful. It is no where near as good as the Taito produced ones that were up on Play Asia a while ago. They are also quite small =(

The iPad 2 is rumoured to be released this month.

What? Too early. The current iPads are selling like crazy still, There's no way that the 2nd gen is this month. Maybe 2 or 3 months away.

I need that lbp2 collector set, not so much for the plush but for the downloadable costumes. I've put money aside for it but $108 is a bit rich for me, $90 - $100 max I think

Cookie it doesn't seem that far fetched, I'm on my phone and can't be bothered looking it up but when did the iPad launch? Apple are relatively yearly with their iDevice updates.

I need a new card to upgrade from my 260GT. It's bottlenecking the rest of my system(i7920, 6GB ram). Sounds like a 570 might be the way to go.
