lol, story on an aus website on getting ipad 2
Go to an Apple Store
Other places may or may not have iPads on launch day. JB Hi-Fi, DSE, etc. might have iPads on the 25th. Might?! You want an iron clad guarantee, not a wishy washy "err, yeah, we might have iPads, I'm not sure, come in anyways" from some dude at the shop. The only place offering this is an Apple Store (list of Australian Apple Stores). Imagine you decided not to go to an Apple Store and went to a JB Hi-Fi instead, only to be told that JB have no iPads, or ran out. You could have been at an Apple store, getting an iPad! Don't make this mistake.
Where to Actually Line Up?
Most of the Apple Stores are in shopping centres. This is good. Means you aren't out on the street with cars throwing milkshakes at you. Usually the shopping centres are open late, as there's a cinema or 24hr supermarket in them. Find a way in and just go stand or sit near the Apple store. Chances are there will be some other nerd, who is more eager than you, already perched in his or her spot. For the three stores out on a street (Perth City, Bondi & Sydney), just sit or stand out on the footpath. Easy.
When to Line Up?
It looks like Apple will be selling the iPad 2 when the store opens in the morning (usually 8, but check your actual store) on the 25th of March in Australia, as opposed to the 5PM sale time in the US on the 11th. So that means you gotta get there early, or maybe even the night before. You can't go by previous lines. They're different products, with different demand, at different times of the year. There could be hundreds, there could only be a dozen. There's no set time someone will show up. If you want to be first, then you probably should get there about 12 hours before the open time. That's the earliest I've ever seen anyone rock up to a line in Australia. If you just want to be near the front, get there about 4-5AM, as the store opens at 8AM. The best advice is just to go as early as you can tolerate. If you're there before the store opens, chances are there will be enough for you.
How Long Will it Take to Get an iPad?
Depends how many staff Apple decide to pull out and serve you. It should be relatively quick, as the store would only be open for iPad purchases, but unless you're near the front, I'd allow an hour or two for you to hit the front of the line. If you have to be at work at 9AM, you better be at the front of the line and allow enough time to commute from the store to your workplace.
I Don't Want to Line Up, But Still Want an iPad 2 on the 25th of March
If you're a sane person who doesn't want to waste hours standing in a queue to get an iPad, prepare yourself for disappointment. You can try running around to DSE & JB, plus some of the premium resellers (Next Byte, CompNow, Mac1), but there's no promises as to their stock availability. Some stores may only get 3 or 5 or less iPads. Only the Apple retail stores will have a flush supply of iPads. The Apple online store will also be selling iPads, but it looks like they won't be doing pre-orders and you'll only be able to order on the 25th, which means the earliest your iPad will arrive is the 28th or 29th of March. Be warned - chances are that if you miss out on launch day, there will be stock shortages. Hopefully Apple have the iPad 2 launch more sorted than the previous iPad. iPad 1 really took Apple by surprise as to how popular it was, so I think iPad 2 will be easier to get a hold of.
I've Never Lined Up For Apple Stuff Before - I'm Scared
It is weird. It makes no sense. You'll be able to buy one without lining up in a few days. The act of wasting hours, early in the morning, for what is ultimately, something not too different to what you already own, is irrational, illogical and stupid. But you're going to do it anyways and it will make you feel good. So fuck it, go to the Apple Store at midnight with a friend or two and nerd it up until the iPad reaches your hands, then go home and enjoy.
