Anyone see the Electronic Playground "Gamers Heart Japan" special on Sci-fi the other day? EP usually makes me cringe and grab the remote but this one was well done, lots of awesome footage of retro games (played badly) and Tokyo city.

As I said on Twitter this morning, I saw that episode last night and I have enough material for 400 Brendan Brewer, Video Game Reviewer comics.

They'll be mostly of Brendan crying and cutting himself with razors while gushing about how much he loves Japanese games.

Seriously though, good show, I'm glad they did it...but it kinda pissed me off about how ignorant some US game journalists are about European game development history.

Conservative politician Teresa Gambaro is canvassing pulbic opinion on gay marriage on an online poll here. The poll is clearly very carefully worded.

I don't assign a particularly high level of value to the institution of marriage - to me it's a weird outdated social convention with an uncomfortable association to religion. As such it's hard for me to get worked up over gay marriage rights when I don't even care for or believe in marriage.

But it is important to protect other people's rights to care :D

What's funny is her site makes it a bit difficult to find out which party she is affiliated with, a small image link on the bottom of the homepage was all I could find. Methinks she feels some shame :)

Sounds way too late to make it onto a truck. You'll get it tomorrow.

It depends where you are in Sydney I think, the last kindle I ordered (for my mum) arrived in Sydney at about 11:30 am and I got it that afternoon.

Granted, it was delivered to my work, which is ten minutes from the airport, so yeh. Don't give up hope!

Legend, You forgot to mention that st leonards subway is PACKED. I tried to get there as quick as possible and there must have been 15 people in line.

Screw that place.

I used to think that, but it depends how close your two families are. Having a nice official get together for your two families is generally a pretty good idea I think. If both families already socialise because they're lucky enough to be in the same city or just generally sociable people, I guess there's little need for it other than playing dress ups.

Also, I don't think same sex couples are even legally considered to be "de facto" so there is all sorts of crazy shit about tax and estates and stuff that makes sense to have. Like, you get taxed on your partners estate. Imagine your life partner dies and leaves you money and you get slugged with a bunch of tax just because you had the same equipment. Pretty dumb.

PO Box?

Won't deliver there. They will call you

that usually means they have done a cross reference before putting it on a truck and realised the address is wrong

call them

Definitely not a PO box. It's just my address. I checked it now, it's correct. Unless DHL were expecting the suburb name instead of the city name. Even then, the postcode should fix that.

I was just reading my kindle in my lunch break and thinking about how much I love it, and how much more reading I am doing these days because of it.

It will be worth the wait Legend, such an awesome gadget.

3DS get!

GAME suck so much. "We don't do price matches for the 3DS".

Went to EB and price matched Kmart's $288 then traded in a bunch of games and my DS Lite to bring the price to around $100. Then bought the Ghost Recon game for $38. The people at the register were really nice too. If this is how it usually is then I can see why EB is kicking GAME's ass.

The staff at the Adelaide CBD EBs are really nice and are always helpful. They don't even bother to check price matches, as long as it's realistic they'll go with it.

Gonna trade in Rayman 3D today, getting either Ridge Racer 3D or SSFIV 3D.

Yeah, you should have put your suburb. Courier services sort of need that as they don't want to have to pull out the postcode books. They were likely trying to look for your street within Sydney city.

Edit: and I should have refreshed before posting...

JB had a few copies of SSFIV 3D left, but they don't price match. EB said they were getting stock today or tomorrow so I'm gonna head down now and see.

Been trying to finish off Fallout: New Vegas over the weekend. While its a pretty good game etc, with a lot of cool quests. There really are some fucking broken bits in the game.

Example. You are given a quest from someone at Red Canyon or whatever to go find their courier (the like 50th courier you have to find that is missing during the game) and the quest marker updates to
EXACTLY WHERE THE FUCKING GUY IS ON A CROSS

While I do appreciate a bit of help in making suggestions on where something could be etc, or using my own memory about things I have seen in my travels. Giving the player hints in such a way is fucking stupid.

How is that broken? That sounds like it's working as intended. Which games have you played lately that don't point you to exactly where you have to go? Modern Video Games.

Well, that is true. It is broken in my minds eye of what constitutes a game.

And its not like you can unsee that the map marker is indicating exactly where to go and pretend to 'role play' or whatever.

15 people line is packed? =\

All of our Subways have 30+ people lined up between 12-1.30

There is a sushi place in our building's food court. Every lunch without fail between 12:00-1:30 there is a 50 or more person que. But at the rate they serve people i imagine they make an absolute killing. (sadly enough i que up most days cause its a good lunch for like 6 bucks as opposed to $15 somewhere else)

Table has been booked for SydGAF meetup, guys. I only booked for 10 and it looks like we'll have 12-ish now, so I might need to call to let them know again. If anybody else is coming, please make sure to let me know soon so I can fix up the booking.

Also, nobody has indicated they need to be met at Circular Quay yet. If you want help getting to the hotel, make sure you let me know so we can arrange the exact spot to meet.

Here are the details again for anybody that missed them:

Date: Thursday, April 7th
Place: Australian Heritage Hotel in The Rocks
Times: 6:30pm Circular Quay, 6:45pm Lang Park (at the intersection of the pathways), 7:00pm The Australian.

... or when I had a quest marker for a new quest. Went outside, walked for a bit, saved the game. When I came back, the marker was in the building where I got the quest... WTF? So I entered the building, and the marker was outside the building. I go outside, and it's moved somewhere else.

Was it attached to a fucking mouse or something?

The developers just wanted to fuck with your mind. 100% intended.

Another of the magical quest markers quests...
finding the entertainers for the Tops Casino... surely it wouldn't have been hard to suggest the person talk to people in various towns if they knew of anyone instead of just marking them all....

Maybe I just hate modern gaming? :p

Wish I could make the SydGAF meetup! Would love to have been there but alas, my mum is coming to stay with us this week so no dice.

If all goes well and nobody gets date raped we should do it again soon so I can join in the shenanigans!

Nope. Got to the X, kill the guys or hit button x to talk to them. Win. Repeat.
At least New Vegas gives you a tonne of non combat options so you can often complete a quest just by talking your way out of it. Or into a new one.

Yeah, but there is still not a lot of problem solving, other than which dialogue option to win with.

This is true, but its not like that is the exciting option as they are usually just pure skill requirements that tell you how much 'Speech' etc you require to pass them.

Quit out of chat menu if skill too low.
Read just enough speech/medicine/other skill book to pass check.
Redo dialog tree.
Win.

:(

Yeah, that's something that Heavy Rain got real right. Dialog was never about satisfying a number, it was about thinking and deciding which would be the right thing to say.
It also sort of helps that the game doesn't have a quick save or the chance to redo dialog through weirdly circular trees like in Fallout.

You have to build your character a particular way to pass those options. Books and Magazines aren't going to help unless you're already close to the target. There are a couple of quests where you would have to collect a bunch of stuff, or have a repair skill high enough. I don't mind the idea that you go and "study" repair and come back with a higher skill to complete it that way. I also love dialog skill checks, and New Vegas has more than any other game.

Being able to build a custom character a certain way is more core to the experience than having to solve problems to complete a quest. I think that experience is almost entirely in the realm of point and click adventures now.

Not saying skill checks in dialog trees are bad, it would just be nice for them to be hidden, or at least partially so (perhaps just tagging it as thought it will do a skill check?).

It provides a little bit of unknown to the outcome which would be much more satisfying.

Dialogue trees, obvious skill checks, etc could be done a lot better, but managing to do quests without any combat in New Vegas was so refreshing I realised I'd forgotten games even gave me the option to do so.
