AusGAF 5/5 - Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy, a rental at best

Can't believe I have to install iTunes. Makes me want to cry after all this
What do you need iTunes for? I just use Winamp for everything. Foobar gets mentioned a bit too.

Could probably build a decent mid-end gaming PC for about $800, or a decent high end for around $1300...
Only problem is grabbing HDD at the moment. Other than that it is a great time to build. $350 for CPU/Mboard, $250 for a 560Ti.

This is the Dell monitor I picked up for $170 and every day I love it more and more. Currently $270 but they have sales all the time. First time buying from Dell so I had no idea what the quality would be like.

For syncing and all that jazz.

I've used foobar before and it sometimes randomly corrupts the database. It's just easier to have iTunes for those once a month syncs for new songs. I hate it, But it works.

Does Australia have a Secretary of State?

I want to transfer my bloody iOS App from my brother's Developer Account to my own, though Apple continue sending me an automated email, with this included:

"Additionally, we will need to receive business or court documentation from your secretary of state which reflects the nature of the change in legal entity or acquisition."

All for a simple App transfer...

What sort of budget are you working with? I assume you already have the processor and are just after monitors and a sub? Would you consider purchasing better fronts and sub and upgrading to the rears later?
Processor was just going to be the Logitech breakout box and sub. Would be replacing the satellites with whatever you folk can come up with. I did find an el-cheapo Sherwood 5.1 setup with an active sub I could use that came with 2-way sats which is what I'm looking for, the top-end of the Z5500s is woeful and there's no midrange to speak of, and I could get for $250. Actually went into JB briefly today and saw a mate working there, but no stock. Probably getting more in sometime next week.

Edit: Budget was basically "as small as possible", for the reasons outlined below in my reply to Danoss :)

Wall of words.
Holy shit, another audiophile :)

I'm never spending a shitload of money on a surround setup, nor am I concerned about having a fuckawesome system for my TV (which is why I haven't bought a "real" amplifier/receiver yet). Too much shit changes with technologies (HDMI, for one) for me to be concerned with trying to keep up. That, and I just don't find the detail I appreciate in any recordings that are destined for home theatres, like movies and games. Just music. That's why the PC is my audiophile focus (for production work as well as listening) with two of these and soon, hopefully, one of these (although, given you know your shit, you could offer an alternative suggestion for something that would match the Yamahas?).

Basically all I'm looking for is something to plug the big gaps but just well enough so I'm happy. I've dropped around $500 as of 5 years ago on what I currently have* (the Z5500s), figure that if I can spend only a few hundred more and improve the sound noticeably then that's all I ask. If I was going to be the sort who'd drop arseloads on a massive setup, I wouldn't have stuck with these Logitech fuckers for this long, trust me ;)

It's great knowing there's someone as switched on about their sound (possibly mores) as me in this thread. May pick your brain every now and then!

In the meantime, I'll leave you with some porn, a picture of (the exact same as) my old man's home speakers (that my brother has dibs on, the bastard)... the NS-1000s:

Yup. Right down to the immaculate (the surface is baby's bottom-smooth, no hyperbole) rosewood finish :)

Adelaide has been a road for as long as I can remember though. If they can't score there they should be ashamed.

Gorgeous speakers, I love a good rosewood finish!

As for something to suit your purpose, it can be difficult. Speakers for producing music and speakers for enjoying listening to music are two different beasts.

Monitors are excellent for listening for accuracy and subtle nuance in music, so you can sculpt it to your liking. Listening to music on monitors for pleasure, I find completely uninteresting. They're not my area of expertise, they serve a purpose, but as I don't create music, they're not something I'm terribly interested in. So unfortunately, I can't help you in that area.

As for the enjoyment of music, the speakers and amp that I mentioned in my post are for exactly that. I'll play movies and TV shows such through them also, but their primary purpose is to play music beautifully. They're immune to new technologies as the amp only accepts stereo RCA, so as long as you have a DAC (whether built into some other device (DVD player, sound card, gaming system) or one separate, if you're hardcore enough), it'll work just fine with whatever you have; your concerns in that area are alleviated.

The good thing about a nice stereo setup is that you find one that satisfies you and that's it, you buy them once only! No need to upgrade or expand or anything. Because the speakers deliver your music in a way that you enjoy, there is nothing else to be done, no accessories needed to be bought or parts to be expanded upon.

You don't need to set the world on fire and spend arseloads on a sound setup to have something that sounds good. Those "real amps" that you refer to are relatively terrible in construction unless you spend thousands on them. Plus by design, the power they're rated at is what they chew up all the time when switched on, whether it's used or not (which is why they're always so hot).

As you would have seen by my post, I didn't break the bank, they're nothing fancy, but they deliver the experience that I want. Actually, if you look at the company websites, you'll see that both the speakers and amps are the bottom of the line. This isn't a bad thing, it's exactly what suits my needs. If I wanted the speaker model above, I would actually need a larger room to enjoy them properly. If I wanted the more expensive amp, it wouldn't make a difference as they're made to drive bigger speakers that I can't use.

What I'm trying to say is that the way we consume our music is the same. I think you'd really enjoy the approach I've taken to enjoy the music coming from the PC. It's a really cost effective solution in the long term, and not very expensive to begin with. You don't have to buy what I bought, but if you attend your local trusted specialist hi-fi store (dear god not JB Hi-Fi), look for some bookshelf speakers and an integrated stereo amp, and take the time to demo them on a CD you know well, I guarantee you will walk out a very happy man.

In a nutshell, it's "spend now, save later". And the spending part doesn't hurt the pocket that much at all.

My two cents re: Monitors for music

Monitors should never use any EQ for music work (I never use EQ for normal music, movies, gaming anymore and find I don't get fatigued ears). They should accurately depict the music and not flatter.

Reference speakers like the HS50 are usually used in conjunction with a "proper" set of monitors since the reference is meant to show you how your stuff sounds on more prosaic gear. I don't have room or the money for a set of the Yams but I'd love them so that I'm not burning CD's to test my stuff in my car.

Other thing is, it takes time to learn how things sound through new monitors in whatever room you're mixing in.

HiFi speakers should be nice to listen to. Most are shit since most people don't set them up properly. Those big arse speakers wound probably do a nice job without a sub.

Edirol/ Roland make some nice desktop speakers, often with a headphone socket as well as two inputs (ie a console/ dvd player and a computer). The bigger models have independent volume as well as a digital input. I wouldn't recommend trying to mix much music with them but they're great for movies/ games.

In other news: I've finally got round to watching Walking Dead Season 1 and I'm absolutely loving it. I may also buy Skyrim this week so I have something to play after I finish AC:R

Probably not the worst news with Dhoni having a breather. I never thought India could be that bad. Almost gives me false hope for the Ashes. But then I remember we were beaten by New Zealand...without Vettori :\

Not voting this year as last year it took around 600 hours of research to feel comfortable with my votes. As it stands I liked a lot of music and will most likely enjoy the majority of what is voted into the Hottest 100.

Aside from Coldplay of course. I just don't enjoy their stuff any more.

I love Drive so much. So many memorable, awesome scenes in that movie.

Totally.

I went in knowing absolutely nothing about it, no expectations and loved it to bits. I think those scenes stand out so much because overall, it's such a minimalist film; it allowed that contrast. Also, Bryan Cranston was excellent as always.

I watched Drive after seeing Contagion, which had quite a large cast and was hugely disappointing. The first 5 mins of Drive made Contagion look like the catastrophic failure of a film that it was.

It's a shame my friends have willingness to try anything new. I tried to get them to watch Drive, all I hear is that they skimmed their way through it as it was too slow for them, ugh. It can't all be like the opening sequence. Without the (still incredible) slow-burn, those high points don't have the impact they need. I still can't understand how they made what would be mundane in a lot of films so enthralling in Drive, but it was done so well.

The first time they play that song Shaneus linked, it stirred something up in me. The combination of it and that scene was just beautiful.

Rant from Slater.

Ok here goes . I am sick of the continual attacks and in my opinion racist comments from @Craig_Foster on British people his article in You have disgraced yourself . What a way to welcome someone to our great country and please Jim Magilton do not think this is the way That decent Australians welcome people from other countries . Who Craig do you think you are to tell the victory of who they should Employ and of what race . Why do you pretend to know what and who is a good coach. You have never coached anyone and why is nationality Important . British people have made a massive contribution to the history of our game and continue to do so just. It is surprising ]That you dislike the British so much because after all they gave you a career playing in the guess what . The championship . You didn't Mind the British then did you ? Good money you earned and you enjoyed it all with the help of an englishman Terry venables . The best You ever had didn't you once say ? a man who saw more in you than anyone else did . What is this pedestal you have put yourself on It is not the one the late and great Johnny Warren stood on he would be ashamed of you ! And who are you to preach with your dark Secret well bugger you you upset my 82 year old father who had a tear in his eye after reading your crap . Yes he is English

But back to your secret explain to all your followers why you are the only socceroo to have been to my knowledge effectively banned Never to be selected again after a disgraceful incident following a world cup qualifier in Tahiti . Maybe the true legend who got you Out of that Tahitian jail should of left you there ! @Craig_Foster hang your head in shame and @lesmurraySBS you should haul him Into your office and tell him his comments are unacceptable after all he does work for the excellent multi cultural channel SBS surely They can't be happy with this sort of behavior . Enough is enough !

And that's all I have to say about THAT !

The problem for Foster is that he trots out the tired clichés about English coaches and football time and time again while eulogising that of the Spanish way, in particular Barcelona. I am well and truly over it.

I don't get this Triple J Top 100 thing. It's always been artists I've never heard, and songs I've never heard. And people have Australia Day parties and play it all day?

"Explain to all your followers why you are the only Socceroo to have been to my knowledge effectively banned, never to be selected again, after a disgraceful incident following a World Cup qualifier."

Foster was arrested following an altercation in a nightclub after the Socceroos had won, and it's understood a delegation of assistant coach Graham Arnold and then- team manager Bonita Mersiades convinced local police not to press charges.

In 2006 Frank Farina, the national coach at the time, referred to the incident though not Foster by name in a Daily Telegraph column, in which he said it ended the player's career.

"I didn't make a song and dance about it at the time - as far as the squad was concerned the matter was dealt with internally," he wrote. "But I never picked that player again because of his behaviour that night."
