AusGAF 5/5 - Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy, a rental at best

Sounds like it would be a massive undertaking though.
Massive is probably an understatement. Not as big as Pandora, which is crazy (internal music experts rank the style of music, sound, tempo, 'feel', etc of each song), but Netflix has literally spent millions trying to get their recommendation engine working better.

Also WB!

Afterwards can I commission you to build the backend for a site involving multiple news/article/editorial/link feeds?
Couldn't Wordpress do a good enough job of that?

Your overall point is valid but this analogy is kind of busted. EB Games don't offer anything major retailers don't, practically.

You can't really get peripherals and specialty gaming items though, right? I've never seen wii or MS points at Big W. But anyway yeah, you get my point!

Now I really want to go to a Billy Hyde and just explore. The music shops in Hobart are a bit shitty.

Maybe. I don't know shit about site architecture. I guess if you widgeted it enough it could work out. I'm kind of talking with more user-side customisation though, so someone can manage their own feeds, etc.

Basically like a massive custom RSS feed?

Doubt that would be that hard to do.

Custom RSS or views shouldn't be outside the realm of possibility. Actually I have a feeling you can specify the categories in the feed (manually) already... If that's the case, you can just make a front end to do that.

Shitty guitars and keyboards don't really replace a specialist store like Allans. That's without taking into account all the sheet music, accessories and other music bits and bobs.

I know people that work at Allans and a few other specialist stores and they have been having a horrible time over the last 6-12 months. Sales are down, foot traffic is down and some suppliers don't want to deal with them because of it. And I'm talking big, big name suppliers.

This JB thing is small at the moment, but if they have some success with it they could easily expand it, hire knowledgeable staff and really kick it up a notch.

It's not good.

Most people I know that work at JB are already in a band, I wouldn't be wrong to say they already have those staff. Plants, the conspiracy and plot thickens.

Yeah, pretty much all the staff at Allans are in bands and I've seen JB HiFi staff playing at gigs I've gone to around Adelaide.

I've always wondered how Allans stays afloat. They've always seemed beholden to absurd Australian prices on things. Anyone looking to buy high-quality instruments and sheet music surely can do better online or from direct import places.

Lil. Ars has an article on the pokemon ios rip off. Saying it's a Nintendo issue as well because they have avoided ios..... Why so many dumbs?

Speaking of crappy keyboards, what would I need to spend to get one that I could plug into my computer and use with this:

http://synthesiagame.com/

I use synthesia with an M-Audio Axiom:

edit: oh well site is banned, but look on the m-audio website, great keyboards

Plugs in via USB, there is a little bit of setup involved with audio drivers etc but there are plenty of guides around.

It's a great tool for learning piano/keyboard. It just uses midi files for input and there are plenty available for all your favourite tunes and game melodies.

How's your learning progress been?

I'd say at the moment I'm a solid beginner. I can read simple sheet music and can play (although not particularly smoothly) three chord songs. I want something to help me get to the next level. I was looking into piano lessons but they're like $70 a week so stuff that. Synthesia looks good for that.

Those keyboards are really expensive :S

Dude that program looks awesome. I'd be starting from scratch so would probably still find it really hard. Might have to snag a cheap midi keyboard at some point. All this music talk today is making me wanna pick up my guitar (for the first time in like 6 months).

Maybe I could get a MIDI keyboard as a cheap replacement for my busted-ass piano until we can get a good one second-hand...

Yeah I just want to find a decent keyboard for like $200-$250. We've got a really good piano at home (probably just needs some tuning) so the keyboard doesn't have to be amazing. I just want it for practice purposes.

I can't see the website, but it sounds like it could be quite handy. Would the Rock Band keyboard be decent enough for it?

I did create a thread on GAF about it some time ago but it appears to be gone. The program itself is a great tool for learning while taking some of the laborious tasks away (e.g. sheet music, although there is an option to turn that on).

I am still what I classs as a beginner and I haven't used it much lately due to other interruptions. The only thing it was lacking in was fingering techniques, however they do have a guide now to recommend what fingers you should be using for what notes, also there are a number of midis people have created for practicing scales which will help a lot.

You can definitely learn to play with this program/game but if you're using a keyboard it will still take a bit of practice to transition to a piano (due to the action difference most of them have).

If you can use the keyboard on a PC it will be fine for a starter keyboard, probably check the forums to see if anyone has got it working.

Awesome. It *is* MIDI and I have several methods of connecting it to my PC (used to own a microKorg, still own a few other non-keyboard based synths and controllers) so it should be all good.

Kinda excited about it now!

Very interesting, indeed.

More interesting is trying to figure out why some of these meals were chose. Two Cokes, and onion and a packet of Extra? Six Cokes and a single cracker? What appears to be a single black olive?

I don't think I can ever put myself in the mindset that some of these people may be occupying but I cannot fathom what lead to these choices. Were they choices of fondness, statements, born from the effects of incarceration or something else entirely. I think that's the part that I find most interesting.

If I were in the position where I were asking them for their request I don't think I could help myself from asking the motivations and thoughts that shaped their decision.
I'd pick brake fluid and chlorine. Wouldn't be pleasant but at least I'd be taking a few of those damn wardeners with me! Totally dig the olive tree thing though, that's some pretty profound stuff. Shame that kind of epiphany couldn't have come to him prior to committing whatever heinous act sent him there in the first place.

Even non pc gaming nerds can find websites and figure out what they are.

They don't do it with the panache of a PC gamer though, to be fair.

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
The are concentrating more on long form journalism, instead of news every 5 minutes that is normally just regurgitated press releases.

First few articles have been stellar.

This is what I want to do :(

They also have a feature on the site called The Cut, where they pick out great articles they find online and link through to them. No quoting of text or excerpts, just a link and a recommendation to read the story.

Who knows, you might pop up there one day!
