How come you never are allowed to show mercy in games? You almost always have to kill... If you injure them, you have to finish en off, hell even in wow if the enemies try to flee in fear you have to chase em down and kill em.

Something that's been bugging me for ages, 256 death animations, no other options...

I don't know why, but for some reason I always had the impression that shots weren't always fatal in GTAIV. It may just have been euphoria bugging out though, but I seem to remember dudes writhing on the ground but clearly out of the fight.

Of course you could just shoot them while they were on the ground, but that was kind of up to you. I played Liberty City Episodes though and that didn't actually seem to be true, so...

That is the whole point! Rather than just a sushi train of bad guys to kill by the boatloads every person you kill now weighs a little more on you. Makes you think more about the consequence of your choices and the shit that the actual characters are meant to be going through.

Same with Watch_Dogs. You play an amoral arsehole but he isn't interested in getting civilians killed. If it takes no effort from him he will avoid collateral damage as it is no skin off his arse and will mean the heat on him isn't as bad.

You're Gonna Carry That Weight.

In most games they writhe and then get up and shoot at you if you don't finish them off.

New Turok. Day 1. Unless it's like the previous Turoks. Which were turd

I watched a documentary on T-Rex the other night, where they think there may be evidence they lived in social groups and hunted in gangs. Terrifying prospect.

I dont want another Turok - I want a dinosaur game that looks as good as early Turok screenshots felt they would look like: atmospheric, misty, big levels.

So, yes, Turok.

Pfft.. it wasn't fine 3 years ago either.

OK, I like you and your sense of taste in games.

Me too :( I guess having that many options would make the game very large, and most people play for the shooting anyway. Still though, if 'getting inside the character's head' was what they were going for I feel like it should at least be an option. Maybe I just don't play enough games, but I'd really like to see more visually stunning games with a good plot and either mercy options or no shooting. I mean, I loved uncharted but I felt like I had to slog through the shooting to get the the puzzles and story - and I couldn't focus on the quality of the visuals because OH GOD ANOTHER SHIELD GUY. Maybe I would feel differently if I was better at shooting, but I don't want to kill everyone :(

You could have enemies surrender and spare them in Red Steel, I think. I remember talk of that being a thing but I never really played it that much except for a little multi with my brother around Wii launch so I dunno how/if it worked.

lol I remember that! You could like waggle the wii remote up and down to make them surrender or something. I kinda liked Red Steel back then...

Don't forget non-lethal takedowns in DX and the like, though it was effectively the same thing.

Oh! And holding people up for their porno mags in MGS2.

Oh man, new Hot Chip is indeed balls out awesome. Thanks guys!

I Am Alive has gotten pretty rave reviews, haven't played much of it myself as I only played my mates copy for an hour or so. Great, great atmosphere and an emphasis on survival rather than killing.

Yeah loved my tranq playthrough of DE3. Same with the MGS games.

Damn, I prefer this one over the US one but alas, I have US PSN+.

Oh ho, supposedly PS1, PS2 and minis aren't being given out for free anymore, which is a good thing, because I never bothered to download minis.

all right now?

I mean, I could turn my PS3 on, but eh.

So I'm probably not going to be able to play the Guild Wars 2 beta weekend this weekend. If anyone wants to play let me know via pm/steamchat and get the client and I'll provide details to check it out with.

However if I end up being able to, I will not compensate you for the 13gig of client you have wasted on bandwidth. :D

Saw the Sony conference, just finished then. Moderately impressed in that they showed some games, unlike MS.

Bit concerned by three things:
1. No Sly 3
2. Sony All Stars fighting thing is shameless
3. Last of Us is a bit OTT with violence.

I also dont get why 50% of the sony/ms conferences were third party games. Ass creed Anno edition, Far Cry "Nice" 3, CoD etc. Really underwhelming if you want to see platform differentiation beyond kinect and DLC integration.

Oh, and David Cage crawled so far up his own arse his head popped out the top again.

So far, if MS and Sony's conferences are anything to go by, gaming is doomed.

edit: I also get the distinct impression we are at the end of the generation now and no-one cares anymore. Maybe that explains the overload of testosterone in the games.

Bolded the good games. Still dont like the PSN+ version of renting.

Skipping the EA conference, stuff em. Ubisoft now. At least after a bad start it can get better. I hope.

I'm actually really happy with less of the platform differentiation, means I can buy one console, and have 1 pc, and get 95% of games that interest me.

I get what you mean. But to me it also says "there is no real reason to get one or the other" if you dont already have them. I wonder what ps4/xb3 will do now. Both companies seem very much focussed on ancillary services rather than games.

But: <3
Ubisoft save E3 (day 1 at least).

Splinter Cell is nice, + Rayman = EEEEEEEE!

Had a huge week at work this week and i know i need the sleep but now that i'm up this late i can kinda feel myself wanting to watch the nintendo conference. Man i'm gonna be fucking tired tomorrow.

Vince, save yourself three and a half hours and just read the summaries.

Conference rating Summaries:

XBox: 1 star, watched it all but skipped prometheus and GoT spoilers.
Playstation: 1.5 stars. Both PS3 and 360 cant be the number one choice for entertainment, that's like saying there are two "one true gods". The extra half star is for the Sly image shown for 0.2 seconds in the opening montage.
EA: Zero stars because theyre pooheads
Ubisoft: 3.5 stars. Obnoxious presenters and "AAA BLOCKBUSTERS" drop them down half a star.

I learnt a valuable lesson this past month. I posted the following comments in AusGAF, roughly quoted:

lol sydney
lol west coast
lol carlton
geelol
lol melbourne
lol fremantle
lol richmond

Then Essendon lost to Melbourne.

I have the distinct fear that my vocal displeasure at microsoft and sony conferences will be paid back in spades. If it is, I am sorry.

Was that a deliberate non-sequitur?
Or GTA or Minecraft or Scribblenauts. "Emergent play" or make-your-own-fun games kind of fall down for me. I dunno... maybe I just prefer jungle gyms to sandboxes.

OK, I'm up at 2am on what is probably my busiest week this year. Earlier today, the contract on the sale of my unit went unconditional and later this week my wife and I will likely make an offer on a house. Between that, a hard deadline at work and E3, I'm getting pimples from the stress and lack of sleep.

Currently still in France with one of my closest friends of almost a decade, having today taken in the Notre Dame and a large chunk of Paris, about to sit down to a baguette and local cheese over a glass of wine before deciding upon dinner, the weather is still pleasant, and yet I'm still seriously considering watching the Nintendo livestream.
