Personal story: I went to buy a pc, and though I don't understand computers much at all I asked the guy for something that would be suitable for gaming and he tried to sell me something with integrated graphics, telling me it would be good enough to run the sims. (The sims 3 doesn't even run on integrated graphics =/ so he was a liar as well as a asshole). I ended up buying something nice from a lady at JB HIFI instead.
I thought the Verge guy posted a pretty convincing argument as to why the doc was legit in the the GAF thread. Is everyone still convinced it's fake? I haven't been keeping up.
They shouldn't have to, but that article points out some of the reasons why they do and why it will be necessary for the foreseeable future. They don't have to prove anything to you, just to the rest of the world. One thing that bothers me in general though is the need for her (and other women who've written about gaming) to have to spell out that she is a gamer. Not only say it, but have to back it up with "evidence" too. I mean, they shouldn't have to spell it out, but on another level I guess its kind of like "yeah, okay I get it, you don't need to keep saying it". I know that a lot of women do play games so they don't need to prove anything to me.
If you have solid reasons for believing it to be real on the other hand, it's pretty much your job to post it.as a journalist you should never post what could easily be fake as fact.
I think the Verge had pretty good reasoning behind them posting it which it would have been nice if they had included, since that kind of vetting process is actually pretty cool. Choc, I disagree you there, I don't see the harm if they've done everything in their power to vet its authenticity.
Next time you want to buy a PC, ask AusGAF

I've only seen what Choc posted but it looks like they're declaring it an official Microsoft document which there was no evidence it was. Post it sure, but say it's not confirmed as coming from Microsoft.
OK I actually checked it between typing that and hitting post and it comes from Mashable. Who should have known better, but SMH/The Age shouldn't just repost bullshit from them either.

Be embarrassed for the social problems that necessitate it, not for them directly. It's not just about playing games, but if you want to be involved in the industry in some ways, women have a lot more barriers in front of them than men do, which often requires them to prove their background in a way that men never have to.Oh I know, and I can see where they're coming from. I just feel embarrassed that women have to be represented in the gaming industry as "I'm a girl gamer! Just look at all these games I've played!" If you want to prove you play games, just do it.
Goddamn am I tired of seeing 'would' pop up in every thread that makes mention of someone female.

Basically everywhere on the internet. I try to avoid that sort of shit now
That's hilarious.

She's been setting up Ubisoft Toronto and semi-involved in the newest Splinter Cell. There's a really good interview in EDGE from a few months ago and a less interesting one in on Eurogamer.
"I don't know when we decided as an industry that in order to sell five million copies of a game you have to make a Michael Bay film. There are other options."
The Verge guy gave a good reason why he ran it as a rumour, not sure if he wrote all that in the actual article though.as a journalist you should never post what could easily be fake as fact.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4B03blHIbGADoes anyone know of a good resource to read up about the basics of building a computer and all the components?
Reddit has a handy Build a PC section http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc which I've never used because I'm super awesome, but it's got this handy beginners guide post with links to a few different build guides: http://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc/comments/f3efgBwahahahaha....oh

I can't vouch for how good these are due to not having been a beginner for a long time. Maybe Salazar remembers what he used? I, and lots of AusGAF, can help with lots of specific questions once you're ready.
I still hold that Justin McElroy Skyrim gif was an obvious joke though.
its funny that its all gone about face now
even if its not a joke, journalists should not be posting something like that imo.
Oh hells yes you will.
By the way, more on Fairfax and print journalism, Devil Robot Fallback
Awesome. Thanks so much, will have a good look through.
I'm wondering though, will I be able to get a beast of a gaming PC for $15-1600?
Next you'll be telling me I shouldn't draw pictures of games I like.
McElroy's an obvious knob, but I don't have a problem with enthusiasm in the enthusiast media.
