When people say that, they're usually referring to the standard accent used by news presenters or actors.

US - Standard American English (i.e. Midwestern Small Town Accent)

UK - BBC English / Received Pronunciation (i.e. Midlands Accent)

Australia - Cultivated Australian English (i.e. City Dweller Accent)

I suspect that what people think of as Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and South African accents are in fact pronounced, broad rural accents.

Ticks all the boxes for what I wanted, with the exception of a BR-Drive. $1600, from Catch of the Day. They had the same model at the same price a few weeks back. I considered it at the time, but wanted to sleep on it. Offer came back up and I commited to a purchase the moment I saw it (I'd slept on it enough and regretted not picking it up first time round).

Had been looking at gaming laptops and mobile graphics card reviews for the last 3 months, so I had a good handle on what was out there and what represented value for money. Until I get the thing in hand, it's looking like a no-regrets purchase.

The last three gaming PC's I've used I'd built myself, so this is the first time I've commited to a pre-built machine. I'm well aware of all the caveats of locking in with a generationally static laptop, but looked at it from a 'what do I want to play right now?' perspective.

Turns out that what I want to play right now is my Steam list.

I own plenty of unplayed 2008-2012 PC games, and this will be able to handle what I want to play handily enough. Hell, I won't even feel too bad if I find myself buying another gaming laptop in 3 years time.

Last PC was an 8800GT-era affair, with a dualcore AMD CPU that I put together in 2008. Have been solely a console and handheld only gamer since then, so this will all feel brand new to me.

I am more excited for my laptop showing up in the post than I am for any console launch I've been to.

Why a laptop and not build my own PC? I travel too much; all my gaming is on 3DS anyway; the most best PS360-era console game has already been made; I travel too much; Building a PC takes time and thought I'm getting oh so very ooooold; I need to play Bioshock Infinite and Minerva's Den right now; I've spent thousands of dollars on Steam games I've never even download; I travel too much; My MacBook is dated and I need a new laptop for downloading pornography with.

See, most of the time it's fine even regarding VRAM, so long as I don't decide to use any kind of AA, which just destroys memory usage. Then I see the people in the PC screens thread that can upscale to 10000x20000 and I cry (only because the 5xxx and 6xxx ATI cards have a hard limit of 2560x1600 :( ).

He used to be well known as a PC troll but the last 2 years he has been brilliant. He apologised for his PC trolling too thankfully.

It really is a case by case basis. I have a bunch of mates from New York area that sound fine and nice. A few of their friends though have really pronounced pronunciation that is a little off putting. Plenty of Aussies have terrible to make out accents too.

Which is exactly why I'm going to take to the casing with a cigarette lighter and a butterfly knife and carve FUCKS GIVEN = ZERO along the top. This will be followed by throwing the laptop on my bed and performing acts of coitus with 'hot sluts' on top of the device.

I looked at a few alternatives. The Alienware MX's are expensive, and the G75 I'm getting is close in spec to what I was initially interested in with the MSI GT70's.

News of Ford shutting down has hit my dad hard. He's been an engineer there since I can remember. Might be difficult to find another job at his age too.

Also, many part suppliers to Ford are now in serious trouble as well, since one of their key customers won't be around in a few years. Might be more layoffs from other manufacturing industries in the near future.

Nice. I've been gaming for almost a year on a Gigabyte P2542G and it has done well on pretty much everything except for the occasional unoptomised port, so I'd imagine the G75 with a GTX 670M would be great for anything current and should last a while.

I went the Gigabyte because I wanted something light with somewhat decent performance. The G75 looks like a bit of a beast for carrying around, but as long as you don't need to be lugging it on your back everyday it'll be fine.

Really looking forward to getting back into PC gaming. I've intentionally avoided getting multi-plat FPS games on console that had a PC option.

Yeah, I was at their earnings meeting this arvo and it was pretty impressive (and interesting) from my 'have no idea what other pc makers are doing' perspective. Their strategy of "Protect PC" (protect pc business despite crap/dying pc market) and "Attack PC+" (pc+ their dumb word for smartphones/tablets/server whatever stuff) is kinda smart, particularly since they're really trying to grow in the emerging markets space.

But yeah, I had no idea about this. I always thought Lenovo was American because my thinking was IBM Thinkpad -> oh now it's Lenovo Thinkpad -> IBM was American so Lenovo must be too! Clearly I was the right guy to be at their earnings thing making investment decisions n stuff!
