Isn't tehre some saying when you're a teen socialist you go for the labor party but as you get older and get houses, wealth and kids you turn liberal because you don't want your shit changed and stuff taken?

Sounds a lot like the liberal/republican saying

Parliament was further disrupted when people in the Speakers gallery stood to protest and one man took off his shoe and threatened to throw it

He should have thrown it. Gillard would have given George bush a run for his money.

The worst thing about the Iraq war? Not the deaths, the destruction... but that Shoe throwing now is an internationally recognised form of protest >_<;

As for meat eating, I realise we need protein and animals of all sorts are excellent at accumulating it. I have no qualms eating meat, but I think it's important to be humane about how you keep and kill animals. In an ideal world we wouldnt need to, but that's the story of evolution isnt it. Protein, kill or be killed, and we just had to be the species to develop a guilt complex and a system of ethics.

The irony is that high protein diets (meat consumption) spurred the brain growth of our ancient ancestors to the point where we can actually have this conversation. :)

Hopefully this doesnt get bottom of page'd given how long I expect to take to type it.

Anyone see an ABC speaker's forum with Bill Gates earlier this week? It was a fantastic interview on the problem of energy use, generation and types.

First off, a couple of background issues not brought up:
1. Peak oil has been passed
2. Cheap energy is the driver of the economy - it is our fundamental currency
3. We are on track to use up all the cheap, mobile energy. Hopefully we can get out and settle space before we do, otherwise we will have to wait tens of millions of years for it to regenerate.

Now onto Gates' ideas:

1. We need to reduce GHG emissions by about 90%
2. Improvements in efficiency/reductions in useage would only account for 5-10%
3. Alternative energy isnt going to make up the remainder
4. Solar panels on houses are 'cute' but ineffective in reducing CO2 emissions on large scale
5. People should be growing their own food or large amounts of it
6. Energy is best when it has high yield per small volume
7. Battery tech needs to improve and there is promise going on

You can see where this is going

Key point: 4th Gen Nuclear tech is needed and is the only way to meet the 90% reduction target. And these systems apparently have inbuilt and intrinsic safety designs that make meltdown and disaster 'impossible'. No detail was given, I suspect because its subject to patents. He also said there is nowhere near enough research and funding into nuclear power plants of new designs due to the stigma attached.

I personally would love to see how nuclear tech goes. If it can be made safe and is unlike the 2nd gen type tech which caused Chernobyl and the recent Japanese disaster, then it is a damn good idea. Although I really really really hope ITER beats it to feasibility, only because nuclear fusion is a bigger deal and well, it's basically making a small star. So thats cooler.

I wonder what it will take before nuclear power is ever taken seriously. It's going to become inevitable when oil, coal and energy harvesting via solar/wind etc aren't enough to fuel our civilisations energy needs AND meet the requirements of reducing dangerous CO2 levels.

That's a load of crap, each new game that comes out with a new or different engine has random problems with either red or green. It's a crapshoot. Fallout 3 and NV both had major problems with Nvidia cards at launch. PhysX is very rarely used. I use an Nvidia card at the moment, but on average it's no better or worse than the ATI card it replaced.

I'm just speaking from personal experience, so no it's not a load of crap but it's obviously not the same for everyone.

I probably shouldn't have over generalized there and bringing Nvidia vs AMD into it was a bad idea. This shit never ends well.

After japan a generation vince. Germany is closing their nuclear reactors because of japan

which is complete knee jerk.

evlcookie

but ever so delicious
Sounds cool, Not sure if i would personally use it. Unless it came in glados insult form!

Siri can find information in Wikipedia, Yelp and Wolfram Alpha. It successfully answered when I asked it, “Who’s the president of Iran?” (though it misunderstood me the first time) and “Who stars in ‘Boardwalk Empire?’ ” When I asked for a “French restaurant in Bethesda, Maryland,” it instantly returned a list from Yelp, ranked by user reviews.

In my tests, I was able to dictate emails and text messages, even in the car over Bluetooth, without looking at the screen. Accuracy wasn’t perfect—about 20% of the time I had to try twice to get all the words correct. But, in most cases, Siri didn’t make more errors than I do typing on a virtual keyboard...

The system understands multiple, colloquial forms of a question. I asked, “Will the weather get worse today?” and Siri answered, “I don’t think the weather is going to get worse” and displayed a weather chart. You can check stock prices, addresses, map directions and much more. It also answers in a friendly fashion, saying things like “Coming right up” or “I’m not sure what you said, Walt.” And it has some cute answers built in. When I asked it “What’s the best phone?” it said, “Wait… there are other phones?”

I've seen a few convincing arguments to the contrary, but I don't know myself. I always wonder about those that have strong opinions on it's viability one way or the other.

And because of it I have a feeling its going to be off the agenda indefinitely. *sigh*
The greens don't support it do they? Which is why our only option now basically is solar power which is ridiculously expensive and is still pretty ineffective.

Indeed it is a very good point.

It also indirectly proves that Tyrannosaurus was a scavenger feeding on carrion, rather than a top level predator. If it were, it's brain would have developed fearsome problem solving skills, leading to a space-faring race of intelligent dinosaurs.

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that they developed time travel and are ready to emerge when we least expect it.

Hydroelectricity is an effective means, thats one. Tasmania and China have shown it can be. The only problem is the controversy of building dams.

I think there is a strong case for suitable energy collection where appropriate. Geothermal surely has to be a strong candidate. Tidal in some places, wind in others.

The problem is going to be mobile energy sources for cars and heavy rigs like road trains and shipping.

Thats a massive logistics exercise as you can hardly expect shipping lines to be powered by fission reactors when they go and get themselves stuck on reefs in NZ.

urgggh. I'm in the tiny language study room trying to translate something and this Chinese couple across from me will not shut up. I cannot do anything in Japanese when they are all I can hear D: If you want to talk, leave the room. ffs.

ahahahah!! Wow I sound horrible now. But its really hard trying to translate from one language to another with some third language ringing in my ears.

EDIT: it would be equally as annoying if it were in English, I think.

Looks like they might be leaving? Guy's packing up his laptop... but some other girl just answered her phone... /first world problems.

EDIT: aargh no they just sat back down.

Just lodged a find my parcel request with AusPost as my threadless order STILL hasn't shown up over 1 month later. First time something seems to have gone missing in the post for me.

If they report back with no info, guess I bug threadless, not hopeful.

I hate being home all afternoon. The stupid landline keeps on ringing every 10 minutes with telemarketers.

"Good day sir, are you the owner of this connection. Would you like a special plan to call overseas at very cheap rates."

Its funny, we're on that list but we still get calls...

then you complain to donotcall and get them fined

alternately when they call you say i am on the do not call list and if you call again i will report you and hang up

I'd like to do that, but I feel bad about hanging up on them... It must be such a shitty job...

The people who used to live in our house are pretty slack. We used to get all their bank statements and lots of postcards from some poor soul. Actually we still get them, 5 years after moving in.

I'm going to go way off topic for AusGAF and talk about... gaming :p

Amazon's US Uncharted 3 320GB PS3 bundle I mentioned a few days ago is still shipping to Australia and it seems they've also just flipped the switch on the 160GB standalone console too. That means you can get either of the following:
  • 160GB PS3 for US$249 + $14 shipping (available now)
  • 320GB PS3 and Uncharted 3 for US$299 + $14 shipping (available November 1)

Those are pretty awesome deals, if you don't mind importing some of your Blu-Rays (all games are region free, so they aren't an issue). Including shipping, they're about AU$270 and AU$320 at current rates.

I've had the same thing at the last 3 places I've been. The first place I moved in to, we were getting mail from people who lived in the house 3 years ago and it wasn't junk, there were a lot of bills. I don't understand how you can not update your billing addresses after 3 years =/

I have a feeling that in this case they owed money to a lot of people and just wanted to get out asap. :s I still worry that thugs will come round looking for them or something.

OMG, that's an awesome deal! You wouldn't happen to have a link would you?

VOOK

We don't know why he keeps buying PAL, either.
I got a call today at work from a Telemarketer.

Her: Hi this is [indianname] and I'm calling represtenting India

Me: Oh right, how can I help

Her: Interesting in outsourcing shit.... etc

Me: No thanks, hang up.

I can't do anything at work stupid, but when she said she was representing India, I just wanted to say 'What the whole country?'
