So, who is this cutie pie:

I could be wrong, but she kinda looks like Miyu from Fate Kaleid.

Hyouka 4-10

I'm loving this show. I can't stop! Just finished episode 10 and crave more. Well jumping back in.

Oh my god. Shirobako so good, even the parodies are A+++. I totally want a 'real' Shirobako now. You have sexual harassment, no sleep, no showers for a week, crying, and true despair.
It's funny talking to animators about Shirobako as they felt it was too 'light'. I wonder how close then this episode was to reality.
Everything about this episode was so good from the different artstyles, the reaction faces, Hackadoll #1's sanity slowly breaking down, and #4 jumping out a window. Also you totally know that whichever animator that drew the hardcore production assistant in this, was pulling from real life.

Ok, so when does S2 air? That was great. I mean super great. There was no shipping involved either, but for waifu wars it's definitely Megumi > Erina. No need from tsundere crap when you got perfect wife material right there. I wonder if this turns into a harem in the manga, because it is so borderline already, lol. I'm glad they kept the focus on his mission though, but I bet the love part comes later because of what his father said in the first couple episides about cooking and love. Definitely want more father/son backstory as well.. Show was excellent!

Chitanda might be the most adorable character in anime.

It hasn't been announced even. From what I recalled the anime flopped hard in terms of disc sales, but it is a popular manga so it will continue on.

As for the manga, it hasn't turned into a harem as yet. I don't really expect it to given the kind of manga it is. Of course Soma hasn't even discovered girls yet from what I've seen.

On the waifu wars thing, well I'll just say I consider Megumi to be the Onodera of the piece (though I'm on the other side this time for some reason).

Soma has at most two girls (Erina and Megumi)

Yeah Meat exists but who fuckin cares about Meat? She's a non contender

Someone clearly doesn't love...

America.

(Quick someone superimpose a bald eagle on this gif somewhere.)

I actually haven't watched Soma.

I watched one episode, which is apparently the weakest one, and didn't continue.

Might pick it up, might not.

I just finished Shirobako.

It was really good!

Two problems with the show:
1) Those dumb talking dolls were dumb.
2) That dumb girl who somehow managed to get a job without being able to finish a fucking sentence.

Possible third problem:
3) You can tell the show pulled its punches in terms of how hard it is to make an anime. Especially the animators, if all the stories we hear on the internet are true. Not really sure how they could solve that problem without just making the series last way way way longer. Probably better to just make a documentary at that point.

But man, really good! Glad I finally watched it.

Think I'm moving on to Gatchaman Crowds, next. Watched the first episode a while ago, same night as I watched episode of Shirobako and Food Wars, haha. Ended up watching Food Wars first, and now here we are...

(ps ep 5 of the podcast anime i'm on is now up - over a month after we recorded it..... please listen if you're interested! and please criticize, esp when it comes to my big dumb stupid mouth making noises)

Heavy Object is dumb. Boy is it dumb.

But it's kinda dumb fun.

Kinda a bummer that it hasn't sold well. When watching you get a Barakamon kinda feel of inspiration at times when watching it.

Yes, Onodera is a great comparison. They are both perfect wife material. Haruna as well.. That's my type if anything, lol. I married a tsundere chick and can say easily that it gets old.

I like Food Wars, but this comparison offends me!

Food Wars is funny and has funny character interactions. Barakamon is goddamn charming and lovable and I just want to hug everybody in that show.

How dare you!

Honestly I find Soma enjoyable but comparing it to Barakamon is a joke because the former has unnecessary fan service while the latter is a child friendly series. In no way did I get a sensation of heartwarming inspiration from Soma because to me it was cheesy entertainment unlike Barakamon which was more grounded and realistic in its setting and character depiction.

Ok, let's clarify what I said here. The animes as a whole are uncomparible.. However, at times both have very inspirational moments and themes like the episode when Soma's
father comessage to visit the dorm
Maybe it's just too easy for me to block out the fanservice at times, but I agree with you both on the whole; they are two totally different recommendations and themes.

Serviceable ep with solid execution hampered by both Tremors and Stardust Crusaders handling the core concept far better.

Ponyo
Really went into this one expecting to dislike this one given the heat it's caught in here over the years (or at least I think it has.) Honestly, I might have if I had watched it sooner but instead I felt like I was treated to this sort of unappreciated gem. Animation was of ridiculous quality especially in the scenes that were fully in motion without any still background. I found myself rewinding and pausing to go through that sort of thing far more than I'd care to admit. I did maintain some reservation throughout though as things just sort of happened without much real cause, characters just sort of coming and going throughout the movie, and Fujimoto feeling more like an activist Miyazaki expy more than an actual character. Part of this perception was definitely colored by that Oshii quote that'd always been bandied about in here. You know, this one:
"That movie doesn’t have any theme and structure. It is just the result from Miya-san's delusion. There is no inevitability in the story development. For example, why does Risa take such a risk coming back home from Himawari-no-ie in the storm? After she comes home, she again returns to Himawari-no-ie. She could have stayed with Sosuke. There is no reason in her behavior.
Now whether this was just me being inattentive or people purposefully leaving out the rest of it, I found something more of that quote that helped me internally reconcile just how I felt about the movie.
Audiences never accept a story that does not show any rationality. Still, every single scene was interesting. The first 10 minutes are amazing. That jellyfish scene is really fantastic. The reason why we can somehow watch the movie till the end is just because of its excellent expressiveness during every single scene."

I think he nailed things by bringing up the sense of expressiveness in the film. The beginning floored me with how active, beautiful, and mysterious it was. It established the fantastic world we never knew and set expectations that were met with the later intertwining of Fujimoto and Ponyo's world and the boring real world of Sousuke and Lisa. Really, I thought the first scene with Fujimoto and the later scene with Ponyo running on the waves was sort of the heart of the movie. Sure, everything was somewhat loose and the ending was abrupt but I can't really fault Miyazaki for making something a little more unorthodox. I can't even say I cared all that much about Ponyo or Sousuke either but I sure did love watching them inhabit the world he had created for them.

Also, an amusing aside was, in light of Miyazaki's own role of busy father, I found it endlessly amusing that of the two paternal figures, one was too busy with his work to make it home and the other was an environmental activist who thought humanity was a mistake and nothing but trash.

Space Adventure Cobra 28
I'm a big fan of the whole "getting the band back together" sort of eps in anime and this no exception. Final scam was so awesome.

Space Adventure Cobra 29
Man, Bud caught a raw fucking deal in this one. All this burning revenge in the hearts of man up in this.

Space Adventure Cobra 30
Everyone's together and it's time for REVENGE. Honestly, the ep is kinda dumb and contrived in its premise what with Salamander being such a pro wrestling nerd but who the fuck cares? The payoff in this one was off the charts and scrubbed away the episode's earlier sins with one shot.

Space Adventure Cobra 31 FIN
All in all, a good end that doesn't live up to the highpoints of earlier in the series when Crystal Boy was this fearful thing or when rugball was just being perfect because fuck you, it can be. Ending reveal was kinda goofy too and set up in the worst way.

===

More people should be checking this out in spite of my relatively tepid feelings I had toward the finale. It's a great stylish sci-fi action show that's pretty good TV, not just anime. Cobra's damn charismatic and his unconventional looks makes him fairly distinct in a world of pretty boy leading men. There's this rugged quality to him that can't be understated and the way he has fun fucking with everyone is particularly infectious. Really though, it's probably one of the more accessible shows I've seen in terms of broad appeal, much like Cowboy Bebop.

For those that believe in the "fun things are fun" mantra, this is that show. Yeah, there's a couple times where things get super real but otherwise it's this lighthearted adventure that's never overly complicated. Very little in gray areas as the bad guys are bad, the women are strong and sexy, and Cobra is just Cobra. It's easy to kick back and just enjoy the ride because you know Cobra's going to pull through as is typical of someone starring in something that has such pulp roots. Knowing he'll win doesn't matter though because you want to see just how he does and how much shit he talks while doing so. Nothing too highbrow here. Yet...

For those that want a little more art in their lives, you have Dezaki bringing his A-game in this one. Slick direction elevates the material to impressive heights, consistent art and animation lets you appreciate just how lacking it can be when not present in other works, and oh the postcards, so many postcards. The rugball arc is a real highlight too as you get this tightly paced little arc where motivations are well defined throughout and every conflict reaches a satisfactory conclusion without the show overstaying its welcome. Admittedly, there's some artifacts of the past that makes the show feel just a bit dated such as a corded phone, tape on a computer, the silver age pulp scifi feel, or the 4:3 aspect ratio but Dezaki managed to create this work that's surprisingly enduring despite these few hangups. Elevating the material to the level he had, coupled with the general positive tone of the show, never once leaves Cobra feeling an old show. In fact, it feels fresher than ever in the current anime atmosphere.

In spite of its few flaws, I still think it 10/10 material and hey, if 31 eps of awesome is too much of a commitment for you, there's always the two hour movie that's a little more surreal yet equally spectacular.

Young Black Jack 7
Really expected to be disappointed by this one after the intro covered the American Civil Rights movement in the 60s and MLK's assassination. Instead the episode really sort of proved me wrong by being a little more sophisticated than the usual fare the show has offered so far what with the better direction, great reaction shots, and the misdirection as to just what Blackjack was going to have to handle. Next ep looks like it's focused on PTSD too which, if handled right, will have built off the previous arc and the foreshadowing in this episode. I love when a show surprises me in terms of its expected quality. There's no guarantee they won't drop the ball again though.

Megumi is great, and Ikumi is pretty awesome herself, but the best ones are Alice and Erina. I hope the popularity of the manga is enough to green light them a 2nd season.

You know, both these pictures have a slightly creepy vibe about it. First one because it's hard to tell her age and is pet like.. a pet, evidently being rather flushed and excited. 2nd because the dude is portrayed like a creeper smiling with only half the face visible like that.

Also, are those burn marks? What is this, some kind of makeshift Hanako?

Ohhh okay gotcha. So in a way shouldn't fans be pleased with this? Unless they are of horrible quality, this would mean loads of new content that they never read on the manga. But let me guess, the quality isn't there lol.

On paper filler sounds like a great thing for the fans unfortunately in Naruto's case, the characters are usually OOC, the actual arcs are quite boring and the animation is mediocre at best. Out of 400+ episodes there have been a handful of great filler content.

Utakata (six tails) in Naruto kinda counts I think.

Praised be filler cause it gave us this and this

This is one of them. Power arc was great for the animation alone.

the awkward moments when filler has better animation than important canon scenes

i liked the concept of seven sins but for some reason reading it was kinda a chore. Maybe the show's okay.

I think i didn't really like the male mc

The hell, that makes these pictures even worse. Like, she's still weirdly sheltered and padded as if the guy is above her or sth.

Now I dunno how the story actually is, but from these pictures I would expect the generic Japanese VN trash with a touch of extra creepiness. The MC is probably all heroic saving this damaged and traumatized girl, who will btw. never develop much self-initiative, as that would be actual growth. In return for saving her he gets to have sex with her because that's what you do with a girl trophy in those trash tier VNs.

To think that Clannad got so popular with that formula... But wish fulfillment fantasies are an easy sell I guess.

Thanks for the recommendations for Seven Deadly Sins. Show is fun as hell.

Good to know - the show is continually pushed on me by Netflix, so have become kind of curious about it.

What's the general reception around these parts?

-------------

I'm currently back on the anime watching train, after a couple of years out in the wilderness. It at least let me recognise how I consume things, and what habits work best for me. I absolutely cannot abide watching things weekly, as it completely robs me (and by extension, the show) of any momentum.

It's probably what made my recent watch of 'Attack on Titan' bearable, because I would have probably analyzed it's somewhat, schizophrenic focus, had I been watching it on a regular schedule.

Just spent the morning with the first six episodes of 'Hibike! Euphonium'. I like it - won't say much about it, other than I've missed KyoAni's sumptuous production values.

Spectre 007
There's a giant octopus having threesome with james bond and bond lady in the opening, so it's totally anime.
I feel like i'm watching the MGS4 of daniel craig james bond. Everything from casino royal till skyfall suddenly connected by a single thread, nanomachine, lots of fanservice (Monica Belluci, Bond car scene, and several nod to classic JB movie), IT as a focus for the villain, and the main villain is
james bond step brother who's jealous of James Bond since his dad pay more attention to him. Dammit Liquid bond!
. The action is lacking, especially compared to this years action movie like mad max or kingsman. Even Spy has better action scene. It feel so lackluster when compared to previous movie...

That doesn't make it any better.

Still, the unfortunate implications of that design are pretty hard to overlook.

Looks like a case of trying to be too faithful to the original Tezuka.

Which was strange given there seemed to be an actual effort made not to do that sort of the thing with the African-American characters. The show emulating the Stars System has had some weird results. Sometimes they don't make enough change and sometimes they go so far I don't even recognize who someone is supposed to be.

Fafner Dead Aggressor - Exodus S2 14-20

I love this show. Sure the death toll is pretty high but on the up side it feels like every death had, more or less, a meaning. Makes it feel like the show has a bit more substance to itself.
I also liked the way they handled the fights on two different fronts. The little cuts to show that events are still going on made it feel connected for me.

Sword Art Online 07

Kirito walks into a store, breaks the most valuable item (with his own super sword that's totally the best thing ever made!) and then immediately starts talking shit. Is there anyone that can stop this madman?

I think the show, at least in these past seven episodes kinda knows what's it's trying to be and never pretends to be more. Kirito just fucks up bad guys and saves girls. Which is nice since it's really fun to see Kirito fucking shit up and saving girls.

As a one-shot episode this particular episode hit all the good notes; a new likeable character got introduced, they did something wacky and Kirito got to act like a badass. He even got a new sword and companion (who has the worst timing when it comes to confessing her love to Kirito).

The end of the episode was rather odd because it was basically two full minutes of Asuna stealing Kirito from the new girl, rather heart-breaking. Is this the awful fate that lies in store for every new girl that crosses paths with Kirito?

-------------

PS: Apparently the writer of the Light Novel writes his own fanfiction or something? I've been looking up some scenes and I can't even believe what I'm reading. Is it actually legit? Does this tie in with the infamous "chapter 16.5?"
