Revolutionary Girl Utena 34

The shadow girls spell everything out in an obvious and blatant way right in from of Utena, literally using spotlights. I didn't think that they were like, actual tangible people. Just kind of a method for the writers to speak 1 v 1 to the audience, but I guess that should've been thrown out when Utena started responding to them. Or maybe they still aren't real. Whatever.

I think I need someone to sit me down and tell me wtf because this episode was denser then Utena herself

That cliffhanger though. Just so deadpan.

34 is my favorite episode :3

Damn, I missed episode 33 reaction. Stupid work.

Everything is coming together at once for me. EVERYTHING. I was riding this along thinking "Yeah this will probably make sense eventually" and I don't know what happened but suddenly it all makes a LOT more sense now. I haven't been reading anything else about this show (except for Phaze's early impressions, once he passed me I stopped) so I am kind of just shooting the shit here. This is my rough, early read thus far.

Akio. Fucking Akio.

LOOK AT THIS MOTHER FUCKER.

Everything about this dude's character is simultaneously amazing, sexual, ridiculous and disgusting. He's even worse then Touga, the womanizing playboy and Saionji, the narcissistic wife beater. Good job, Akio. Touga is literally photographing Akio in sensual positions while Akio gropes himself. Later, Touga and Saionji meet in the student council room and then pose with their shirts off while cameras and microphones nobody is manning observe them.

I have to admit that I have NO idea about this one, nor do I know what to think about Saionji's comment about everyone being in their own coffins.

When Utena and Touga were riding on a horse and Utena fell off only for Akio to come up on ANOTHER HORSE and catch her in midair, I couldn't help but to burst out laughing. It's just so over the top. Once again, Utena just accepts it. What are the chances that Akio and Touga (who are PROBABLY working together) are randomly riding a horse on the same path at the same time and that this wasn't just some kind of ploy to put Utena even further into Akio's hands? Extremely low you say? NAW, BUT MY PRINCE THO. Utena is so obsessed with her ideal vision of a prince that she lets this shit happen and doesn't even bother to think about it. At the time, at least.

Girl, you are two steps off of having a massive realization. Her fanatic dream world is about to merge into the real one.

Touga even mocks her - "Isn't the prince on a horse such a blindingly obvious trope of your little fantasy?" (albeit in slightly nicer language then that) and before that saying that Utena is a girl who is so in love with her prince she met once, whos name she does not know, whos intentions she cannot verify, in a place she doesn't remember except in her dreams. That's Utena.

The shadow girls plays are now just straight forward metaphors. Before they were almost complete nonsense, but they've been getting more and more tangible. The legendary Casanova fisherman who can catch any fish and sees them only as something to exploit finally finds a fish he can't catch. So what happens when this misogynistic asshole womanizer who thought he could get any woman in the world suddenly cannot get this one woman in specific? OH SHIT.

I think Anthy has begun to show more "emotion" or maybe I just missed that as I went along. Maybe emotion is not the right word, because I think it's actually way more subtle a read then that. Anthy likes to smile with her eyes closed. I think that is pretty simple and typical of what I feel like her character is supposed to represent, the helpless kind of shrine maiden-y girl. She does it a lot, but I've started noticing when she actually does it, and a lot of the time it has to do with Utena and Akio. I don't think she's happy at all. I think she's actually super pissed off. I'm not really sure why, but sometimes it just feels like that.

She's either pissed off or conflicted. Or both. I still don't know if she knows what Utena doesn't know.

I can't tell if she's angry at Utena for taking Akio or Akio for taking Utena because if I think about it she has never actually showed genuine affection for Akio and just seemed to be following his orders. But then again, she did set Utena up. But then again, Akio told her to do that. I don't know what to think of Anthy. She's always been weirdly compliant with everything, so I just assume she has either no choice or doesn't understand what's going on.

One other thing about Anthy, can she just...change how long her hair is at will?

I feel like the times when the series focused on Kaiki, Hanekawa and Nadeko as kinda being in the main role was WAY better.
Does this just become a "best girl" thing? There is lots of not great Kaiki and Hanekawa content across the series. Hanekawa saw her peak back in Bakemonogatari, and repeat visits don't usually add much to the character. Kaiki is the only really standout point of Nisemonogatari, but he really can't carry the material. When he returns in MonogatariS2 his time as the protagonist doesn't really push itself to hold on to what makes Kaiki unique (much of which falls on Shaft). Nadeko arcs are fine I guess...but she just feels insubstantial compared to the rest of the cast, and she has maybe the least interesting perspective to offer in conversations of any character across the entire series.

Yotsugi is maybe the strongest character across the series for me, and her ability to see through the situation and identify problems gives her openings to really elevate the dialogue to something that feels more substantial. It's not really something that carries an arc or something though. Shinobu operates in a way that's fairly similar. I don't really think the series is carried by its cast though, which is why you can find these recurring characters in arcs that have wildly varying quality.

Anthy is definitely the character that more benefits from a rewatch. Knowing the truth of her character you will notice and realize SO MUCH stuff.

Does this just become a "best girl" thing?

No, just in comparison to Kanbaru in Hana, I thought those three held together being in the central role far better. And I disagree about Hanekawa, I think she's gotten progressively better and better each season, she ins't my favorite character but to me she is probably the bet one.

Yotsugi, Shinobu and Gaen I do find very entertaining though. It seems some people hate their shtick but I think they are great, even when Shinobu and Gaen decide to just talk for 20 minutes.

About the series not being carried by the cast, I somewhat disagree. I find myself really into all the characters, even ones that I don't "like" like Nadeko.

I can totally see that. I wasn't really enraptured with the first 10-15 episodes, so maybe they are better on rewatch.

Hana's included under Monogatari SS on CR, so I just didn't include it.

Yeah Hana is technically the last SS arc but I think it was done way after.

Koimonogatari was the peak of the series for me, mostly because of Kaiki's role as the protagonist. He's so much more charming to watch than Araragi; he's a jerk and a liar, and he knows it. That's the amusing part of him, and where a lot of the humor in his scenes comes from. There's still some good deep within him (as he shows during Koimonogatari), but it's buried under a lot of sarcasm and blatant falsehoods. Not to mention as we find out later (though should have known earlier, given his speech in Koimonogatari's intro),
he's a bit of an unreliable narrator at times.
It all makes him much more interesting to watch than Araragi, honestly.

Koimono is my favorite as well, when I was watching it I was really into it. Still my fave. I already want to rewatch it.

Kaiki has got to be my favorite character, but you can't really undersell Senjougahara and Nadeko in that arc either. And the OP is DOPE AS FUCK

As for being an unreliable narrator
Nadeko is probably one of the best unreliable narrators I've seen. The entire Medusa arc is amazing.

Edit: lol I said "I'm in too deep now, halfway through episode 22 I started to think that a season about Kaiki, Oshino, Gaen and Kagenui would be really awesome. I know I'm in too deep when I start wanting a prequel that doesn't really need to be told in the grand scheme of things"

wtf was I thinking, that would probably be lame.

Yeah, it's a very strong arc overall. It's the only one I own on BD, actually. The OP is my favorite from the whole series, and one of my favorites of all time! Great song, and visually creative as well. Definitely one of the better Shaft OPs.

Yeah, even though I'm not a huge Nadeko fan, that was a pretty good arc in terms of both her character and the series overall. The conclusion was very surprising!

This is exactly the same as Araragi though. Most of what you're describing is, outside of some of the sarcasm. The Kaiki Shaft portrays in Koimonogatari is so toothless that he often feels like a stand in for another character. Tack on what is probably a series low point for the series and you have a concept that feels wasted. It also drags on for six episodes, making it one of the longest arcs in the series in spite of the fact that the book isn't really that beefy.

Most overrated boy.
Most overrated girl.
Combine to form the most overrated arc.

I think that's the point of the arc. Nadeko gets the least screentime out of the original 5 girls and Araragi is the least attached to her, so to bring her back like that and really show her psyche in that way was great. I really like that interpretation of the sickly sweet, innocent and saccharine Hana Kanazawa voiced character (of course Nisio probably didn't think of her being voice by HanaKana when he wrote it.)

My favorite part of that is probably when
Nadeko and Senjougahara are on the phone together and after Senjou manages to convince Nadeko to wait, Nadeko says that "They could've been good friends" and Senjou says that they couldn't because she hates people like Nadeko. It's such a good burn when Senjou really isn't in the position to do that.

I have no idea where the appropriate place is to post this, but I kind of have to:

My dad is watching a documentary or something on hentai. He is a humourless man in his sixties. He doesn't watch anything on television other than the news. And now he's staring stone-faced at the screen, listening to the reporter describe the phenomena of yaoi and tentacle porn.

Merry Christmas everyone.

So I'm going to end up re watching Yu-Gi-Oh 5Ds again just to see if it still holds up.

Personally it's my favorite series of the whole franchise.

Isnt that that travel channel guys jpn trip thing?

Hibike! Euphonium: Kakedasu Monaka

Basically more Euphonium except Hazuki is the main in this, but I have to admit I've forgotten a lot of the series. What I didn't forget was the love triangle, which is probably the weakest part and this half focuses on that, so it's kind of surprising that it actually turned out pretty enjoyable.

As an OVA, its pretty much the same quality as the TV series which is more then I can say for most of the BD pack in OVAs recently.

Merry Christmas, AnimeGAF.

Have been away finishing finals, Xenoblade X and Urusei Yatsura. Still catching up to the thread.

Have a nice christmas, guys.

While I disagree with most of your post, I really have to disagree with this. Araragi is definitely a jerk, but being a liar isn't one of his main character traits. There's times when he lies, sure, but he's not a compulsive liar like Kaiki. There are times when Kaiki lies for no other reason than to be a difficult asshole, even if it ends up inconveniencing him (ex. his initial conversation with Senjougahara where he claims to be "Suzuki"). His constant lying makes even the viewer question him at times, and he does
mislead the audience at the end of Koi to make us think that he's died
. That's another thing that we really wouldn't get from Araragi.

He's also a lot more blunt in his conversations with other characters, not really caring if he's pissing anyone off. This is why I wouldn't really call Kaiki toothless in this arc; he doesn't care if his blatant disrespect of Senjougahara upsets her, and he doesn't care if he cuts off Yotsugi's "Peace Peace" shtick. Most of his interactions with others lead to Kaiki being framed by the show as a bad person. Araragi, despite being shown as a jerk and a pervert, is still framed as a hero. Despite his numerous flaws as a person, because he still acts relatively sociable and wants to help people for the sake of helping them, he's a hero. In Koi, Kaiki needs to find an excuse to accept money from Senjougahara to help her out. Not quite as nice and friendly. What does Kaiki get at the end of Koi, despite showing a bit of heroics himself in his final showdown?
Naturally, left dying alone in the snow with no hope of anybody coming to help him.
This is framed by the show (and even Kaiki himself, if I'm remembering right) as Kaiki getting what he deserves.

Maybe this is ultimately why I found Koi so refreshing; we get to see a story through the eyes of someone who's not a hero at all, somebody who the show frames as a villain. Your other points I think are a matter of taste, so there's not much else I could say about them other than that I disagree.

I won't argue about Senjougahara though. She's not my favorite, after all. :p

best part about kizu, aside from the art style, is Oshino Meme's return.

I've actually missed him a bit. It'll be neat seeing him again.

Really hope that Aniplex puts it in a theater near me. I'd love to see it on the big screen.
