Avowed - 30 minutes of uncut footage in 4K/60

Just read XboxEra's first draft of their 10/10 review. Pretty articulate and well paced , they have a few months to go for a second or third draft , looking promising.

Graphics are serviceable. More importantly; I think I'll be enjoying this a lot more than Outer Worlds.

That opening sequence looks like a PS3 game running on the Switch
Even if it's 4K

Looks better, but I dunno theres something going on that makes everything look last gen. I can't put my finger on it. If you single out any particular asset they look fine, good even, but it just doesn't look great as a whole.

I don't like the art style, it looks underwhelming graphically. Character models are shit, especially that lizard guy. He'd fit right in on Concord.
Do you hold the sword that high on Skyrim? Looks weird.

I think it looks like a fun game now, it looked like absolute shit last time. I don't expect anything bigger than a 7 but it doesn't have to for me to give it a try. It'll have to wait though, KCD 2 is in February too..

I think Ghost of Tsushima's 4k60 on ps5 spoiled me. I don't get how the Series X and Ps5 couldn't do 60fps with Avowed. I don't mind the art style but first person view at 30fps sometimes gives me headaches.

Well running on a switch may be too much but the texture are PS3 level
It looks off like how Halo Infinite was when revealed but in 4k

lol i remember that, how on earth did they think tht was good to show?

I think its something to do with the lighting in this game, like i said early everything looks way off. They have a fair bit of time to sort it out but I doubt it will change much.

It's funny how the game started life as 'We got Elderscrolls at home'. Now MS owns Bethesda.
The gaudy use of colour reminds me of Immortals of Aveum.

Best footage. Looks great.

There's areas where it looks uneven. The blue guy is goofy looking. A lot of the godlike are too. But all the environments look detailed and interesting. Around 12:30 you can see a small stream and the water flowing animation looks great. Reflections on the water are cool. Spell effects look a little improved.

Small stuff can still be touched up. There's no real flame effect when you burn the spider web. Some sound effects seem quiet. UI can be slightly prettied up.

All the core stuff looks fun finally. Hope they keep polishing before February. Its never going to look like a peak graphics contender in all areas but it looks more than good enough to be fun. Some cool lighting around 20:45. Some parts really look great. Other parts aren't fully there yet.

I don't understand the hype for this. Looks like a 7/10 game, if it released during PS360 era.
Why ps360 era?
I think I get where he's coming from. It's not visuals perse, just the 'game-feel'. (Mechanics, systems, game-logic simulation)

But i'd argue most, if not all AA and AAA games still feel like PS360 games for the most part, just with higher poly's, advanced rendering techniques and Quality-of-life refinements.

It's an RPG. It stands and falls based on its story, quests and mechanics. At least the quest here seemed to have several possible outcomes depending on whether you found the expedition, returned or kept the artifact and sided with the Oracle or not.

I think the problem is the light. It doesn't have, afaik, any ambient occlusion, which makes everything 'flat' or 'last gen'.

Its crazy that Obsidian devs can look at this footage and go: "yeah, not overcrowded with information at all. Ship it"

is it just me or does the color scheme of this game just smell like another concord and dustborn situation?
whats up with all these games using purple and green and blue in ways dont make any sense for these types of games.
the new dragon age is one of them too.
that blue guy in the video just looks so wrong. and then that ugly background

Exactly. Were the graphics and combat outstanding in their previous games? Nope. They were fun because if the world building and story. I for one look forward to real time combat over the turn based combat from before.

It would look like an isometric cRPG

and be called PoE III and it would have more chance in the tip of its finger to be more significant to gaming than 95% of the TRIPHUL AYS out there.

The artwork for PoE was super well made

And we now get in 3D basically what we used to have as static backdrops

And ends up looking like this and beyond with PC & ray tracing.

So peoples not understanding why peoples are hyped for Avowed must be trolling at this point or just not even trying to understand where this dev comes from nor the implication of recreating the world of Eora in 3D.

The HUD is customizable and you can disable almost all of the things there if you want.

They probably have everything enabled for floor demo purposes.

PoE has always used lots of color.

I'm a fan of Obsidian and while I totally agree, I can't help but think that the game looks off graphics wise as others have said. I'm not going to judge the gameplay at this point because I can't stand seeing someone play a first person game with a controller, it always looks slow and boring (see Doom Eternal's trailers before release for example) so I reserve judgement. What I can say is the UI is way too cluttered.

Now those gif are looking promising, might just be the compression helping but still. Wait and see I guess, in Obsidian we trust and I will try this with Gamepass anyway!

The art direction isn't for me and the decision to create a first person RPG in 2024 is fucking baffling. Good to hear Matt Mercer putting in work though.

Could be kinda cool, although there seems to be something wrong with the lighting? Everything looks flat.

Also glad to read that UI is customizable, default settings make for a lot of clutter.

Why? I think it's more immersive that way.

Good thing you can play through the whole game in third person

I'd be interested to see how it looks and plays in third person. I'm afraid it's going to suck since they haven't shown it in that perspective. Similar to Skyrim.

God I hate this art style. Everyone that bitched about "gritty" artstyle during the 360/ps3 era can go fuck themselves. I'd take that brown and grey shit over this any day of the week.
