Neutral, yes. Lenient, no. I don't rate the games people consider woke on a different scale. That means I also don't simply dock points just because they have those elements. It's a lazy way of reviewing to me. As much as some here don't like the guy, Skillup had the right idea with his Veilguard review and if I were to point to any review as the standard of how to approach a review the correct way, it would be that video.

It's not just you, and I'm just speaking the truth, as I see it happen here all the time.

It would be just as bad as someone here treating a 7/10 JRPG as if it's a 10/10, just because it has a dedicated following...sort of like that one Pokemon game that came out not long ago. It's why that meme rating image above suddenly being taken very seriously is pretty funny to me.
Okay, switch to serious face to communicate with my man.

1. I agree on being neutral to games regardless of culture/social factors, a good example is KCD2. The controversy is such a nothing fluff. But Veilguard is on another level and is a bad example. The game is not just containing "woke elements", it is infused with dev's ideology. The game gives (encourages?) you options to go trans and "open up new dialogues". SkillUp not touching those is simply being shifty. It's not like some random shoehorned gay NPC or pride flags, it is gameplay every player will encounter.

2. The point is press give it 8/10 doesn't mean it's really 8/10 now. Veilguard also got 82, and you see quite a lot 9s even 10s for the game. People don't trust the press anymore and it is very warranted. As for how exactly the game is, let's wait for the Steam score.

With opinions like this, that graph meme made a decade or so ago has been incredibly prophetic.

Opencritic labels 81 as a "Strong" reviewed game.
Metacritic labels 80 as a "Generally favorable" reviewed game.

But there's always some who might think anything below 90 is mid.
It’s not an opinion. Its an objective truth.

456 game releases were reviewed in 2024. 338 (or 74%) of games received an average review score of 70 or more with only 2 games scoring less than 50.

When a scale essentially spans a 20 point spread (from 75 to 95), a game that scores an 80 is mid.

Even going by your incredibly flawed premise, it falls far from "mid".

Ahh, and this is why I don’t take much, if any stock in the modern scoring system for video games. It’s disingenuous and honestly embarrassing lol. I’ll give Avowed a try in the midst of KDC2 and everything else I’m playing. If I enjoy it, I’ll stick with it for the long run. If not, oh well, move on and wait for the next new toy to play with.

It’s a simple process, really, or should be.

someone needs to take you aside and explain averages and mid and stuff

This was the spiciest part of the thread.

The game is too mid to be excited or disappointed. It’s just flavorless slop to be consumed. It will be completely forgotten by the time Monster Hunter Wilds drops.

I dunno man, this makes the Youtuber sound more thirsty for dudes than anything lol

I would argue that having modern california terminilogy in your fantasy game is a big flaw because it completely kill immersion but the dude try to please (or not displeasd too much) both teams but by doing that he is not being completely honest in his review.

As a client, i want to fucking now if one of my companions speak like a retarded gen X.

If you ask me, shill up is just kinda spineless.
I think Veilguard is a perfect example because Skillup said exactly what was bothering him about the dialogue and used videos from the past games which included dialogue from those games that some would deem as woke today, for a 1:1 comparison as to show how the writing quality itself was the problem. That video is very masterfully done because it shuts down both detractors and defenders with breakdowns and evidence, as he goes over the good and bad qualities of the game.

There were even people on this very forum suggesting better ways for writers to introduce the concepts they were trying to introduce, instead of simply shoehorning them in without much thought. Shoehorning in things without much thought is the actual problem here. However, I don't want to go into that further because myself and others here will simply disagree on this at a fundamental level, as some here truly don't believe that anyone at all who has a woke mentality can write out a good video game plot, regardless of any contrary evidence. That's why I call it lazy reviewing, because it's an automatic chip on the shoulder/docking of points for any game that has those elements people here don't like. If someone is truly inclined to have a wokeness meter within every review, then they have to present a review as good as SkillUps instead of just the typical 'angry gamer' or 'jaded gamer' rant.

My point about number 2 is that the rules will suddenly change about what an 8/10 means when it's a game they like. People literally just celebrated Silent Hill 2 Remake's early 8/10 critic metacritic score as an accomplishing win, and now it flipped back for this game. I'm saying this is all funny to me because it's a joke and people will simply use the average score to their advantage in conversations rather than actually reading or watching a review.

Percentile is a flawed premise when you factor for the volume of indie titles/shovelware concentrated in the 70 to 80 range, it is naturally going to elevate a AAA title.

WWE 2K24, College Football 25, The Show 24, and Veilguard are all games I would consider to be mid. All of them are matching or exceeding Avowed’s average on metacritic. All would be falling into that same 80+ percentile.

Politically charged gaming journalists definitely wouldn't care about a lesbian relationship, a roided up woman, or a trans kid. They only care about color palette.

Politically charged agendas means that quality and nuance are thrown out the window in order to preach at you instead in an infantile way lacking any sort of depth

It has nothing to do with a game featuring someone who is gay

"It is a solid, enjoyable game with moments of quality, but it falls short of being unforgettable."

🤔

"There’s just something about Avowed that makes it feel very much like a product built for a subscription service. Not in a live-service game kind of way, but in a Netflix Original Movie kind of way."

Congratulations about not saying anything about the game itself.
the art drection is awful.it looks like ai generated modern day slop

It sounds like another Outer Worlds situation. I played that game and couldn’t tell you a fuckin thing about it, except it was missing something that made the old Obsidian games feel special. It wasn’t a terrible game, but it wasn’t very good either. I will probably play this when it’s super cheap or Uncle Tim gives it to me for free on EGS.
Yeah but this game got an 80 Metacritic, that means it’s good.

Come to think of it.......I don't recall anything about Outer Worlds either. I seemed to enjoy it ok at the time, but no idea what it was about.
