In the wake of the U.S. imposing new penalties on Canadian softwood lumber imports, B.C. Premier Christy Clark is asking Ottawa to ban the shipment of all thermal coal — including U.S. thermal coal — through British Columbia.

"We've gone from seeing Americans as being good trading partners to being hostile trading partners," said Clark when asked why she was making this move now.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced its first batch of duties on Canadian softwood lumber imports, ranging from three to 24 per cent, a move that could have serious consequences for B.C.'s large forestry industry.

Clark said the coal transport ban is something her government had been considering for a while.

"Now that softwood negotiations are at an impasse...we are free to make this change," she said.

"Dirty thermal coal is terrible for the environment. It acidifies our oceans, it speeds up climate change... We're in a unique position to stop that."

In a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Clark says,"For years, American thermal coal exports through Canada have been increasing due to a shortage of U.S. port capacity."

"By eliminating thermal coal shipments from British Columbia ports, we can open up additional capacity for metallurgical coal that is used to make long-lasting steel, not burned to produce short-term electricity."

So I guess this is where things are heading.

I do not envy our next president's job of having to try and restore america's image, agreements, and goodwill throughout the world.

Ideally this would motivate 45 to stop construction of the Keystone pipeline. If they won't let us transport coal, why should we let them transport oil?

Republicans want Keystone?

And while it helps provinces like Alberta, Trudeau isn't really all for Keystone either, but if the GOP want to build it then great. Change their minds to retaliate? That works too.

Damn maybe there's still hope that we'll one day grow some balls and stop actings like America's lapdogs.

Good on premier Clark for doing this. Now we just need for Trudeau to go on the offensive even if it hurts us at first economically.

Trump still gotta make people believe they're getting more jobs, and this is one way. Building of this pipeline would bring in thousands of mediocre, temp jobs, but all press is good press.

We did that awhile back, oddly enough it was with the elder Trudeau.

Obama managed to almost fully restore America's image in the world in this first 4 years. It's definitely doable.

But again Obama was a one in a lifetime politician and everyone outside of the US loved him (except the Russians) so we know that america's next president won't be as likeable and smart as Obama. Still every wrong can be mended. Just stop electing Republican presidents and you'll be fine.

Btw BC elections are coming up.

Ding. CC is immensely unpopular, but DT is moreso.

Expect sputtering "B-b-b-but she's alienating our biggest trading partner!" talking points in a minute. We're succumbing to the same "our policies (or at least our rhetoric) are whatever the other party doesn't like" politics which US Conservatives love.

45 is a juvenile so it's at least slightly possible that this could escalate. "Oh, you're going to ban THAT? Well, I'm going to ban THIS!"

I would prefer if Clark got hit by a coal train but good on her for moving in this direction, even if it's just an attempt to get re-elected (holy fuck can we PLEASE not re elect her?)

Because you guys want some of that oil for yourselves and to refine it in Texas and ship through Texas ports and using American ships.

Don't pretend like the US didn't start this foolish trade war with Canada because of some powerful Wisconsin dairy farmers who don't want to blame their own overproduction and supply but Canadian dairy tariffs.

She is a single mother and has a son. Why would you wish death upon her?

Good. Don't be pushed around by America, countries need to make a stand. I'd love to see Europe, China, Canada, and Mexico to push back more, particularly when Trump has no interest in reasonable discourse.

LOL, this is how Christy Clark gets re-elected
We had our televised debate tonight. She made several references to Trump without actually saying his name. It's as if she's positioning herself as a war-time premier and the only one that can protect us from Trump.

All very strange, but I wouldn't be surprised if it works. Trump is bigger than anything in people's minds, so it's an interesting play.
