Backwards compatibility is amazing!

I love having just one system where I can play all of my old games!

Once my GameCube broke, I thought about getting another one to replace it, but then I remembered that my Wii can play GameCube games, so I didn't need to buy another console! It freed up room for my other current-gen systems that are also backwards compatible.

Plus it saves me quite a bit of money on my electric bill.

I also never owned an Xbox so playing some games that I missed out for that system on my 360 is great! I never knew there were so many amazing games for the original Xbox! I just wish that Microsoft made more games work on the 360. I play lots of old games over and over again because they're just so much fun to play, even after I've beaten it over and over again. There are just some games that I'll never get sick of.

Consolidating consoles so that you have all of your favorite games on one system is so ideal and convenient! I love playing Fifa '95 and Pong with my friends. Never gets old.

The 360 cannot play Timesplitters 2. But it can play Aquaman. The madness! The Wii having 100% BC is actually a very strong point in its favour, ditto with the Wii U. The lack of PS2 support on PS3 was and is disappointing, especially now since they appear to be selling PS2 Classics...

I was peeved at Sony for removing PS2 BC but honestly how often do you play old games.

If more consoles would give me the option to, a lot more. I spent a disproportionate amount of time playing PS1 games on my brother's PS3 that my old PS1 was too bust up to read properly. Crash 2, Mickey's Wild Adventure, Spyro 2, Spiderman, Rayman 1. Mmmm.

Agreed , I'll keep my PS3 around for a backup BR player in the bedroom but it would be allot happier if I could play all my PSN titles on PS4 in the living room, I hope to get rid of my 360 or turn them into windows media extenders for spare bed rooms or something ASAP.....here's hoping Durango is a little quieter than first gen 360's.

No keeping a bunch of old shit plugged in using up HDMI slots or buying a switch and a million cables isn't an option, I have friends, family, roommates ect that use the entertainment center I need everything to work as intended and be simple to operate, shits already complicated enough all running through the stereo.

No GCN BC is part of why I'll never get a Wii-U. Voting with my wallet, etc.

Really? Really?

It's a two generation old system. You get better video output with a Gamecube anyway.

The point of buying new systems is new games on that system. I like B/C but it has never been a deal break.

I just want the commodity of while reminiscing of a really old game to simply download it and play it

PS3 to PS4 is not critical for me or even 360 to 720 because its quite probably I still have the console (analogy to PSone to PS2 and so on)

but if I want to play a Psone game in 2015 it would be nice to have "digital" BC

I think 1 gen back compatibility (for physical game carts/discs) should be a priority for console/handheld makers. Digital makes this even easier.

Anything more than that would be great, but is a bit silly to expect.

Yep. I have a 60GB model PS3 (with upgraded HDD) and when it YLOD'd a few months ago, I sent it away for repair instead of getting a new one. Didn't want to give up playing my PS2 games with upscaling, wireless dualshock, and endless save memory.

Wii-U is more like Wii v1.5

The name alone is your first clue. But alas, this is a different discussion meant for another thread.

So how much money does it save you on your electric bill

My completely idiotic pre-PS3 owning tag says I probably agree.

Ironically most of my PS3 games are HD ports/remakes.

if you actually liked the games maybe you would keep the systems that they are meant to be played on. emulation is never as good as running on real hardware.

I'd pay a 100 euro premium for hardware BC. I just want everything in one system. :| Especially with emulation not working it's magic these days. :|

It really is...

I wish the next gen consoles had it. It's almost 100% certain that the PS4 won't have it, and chances are the 720 won't too (going by comments on the threads). Such a shame.

I'm a big fan of backwards compatibility.
Especially with emulation of games becoming harder and harder to accomplish on PC.
I don't see us emulating PS3 and 360 for quite some time if ever z

Ahem to that brother, if it still had the hardware BC at this point I'd have one or be looking for a good deal. Just to get my old PS2 collection back in the mix from time to time.

But as it stands now I'm at ~147 360/XBLA titles and I don't see anything else that compelling from Sony's side at this point in time.

if PC can't emulate ps3/360 then how do you expect the new consoles to be able to? there's no way sony is putting a Cell into ps4.

BC is great for encouraging early adoption.

for one, it can soften the financial blow of acquiring a new system if you can sell/trade in your old one.

secondly, let's face it, every system ever has that post-launch drought period of waiting for games to release. BC is great during that time for those who didn't own the previous system to explore its library or even for those who did to catch up on games they might have missed.

I wasn't thrilled with the 3DS launch, for example, and it took until late 2011 for the system to really start coming into its own. During that time, however, I was able to catch up on somewhat on my massive DS backlog. if the 3DS could ONLY play 3DS games, the waiting would have been a lot more unpleasant.

If the PS4 and next Xbox aren't BC, I'm not buying one at launch. It'll be at least two or three years down the road before I get one.

(and if either have anti-used-game DRM, I'm not buying either)

Just bought The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for Xbox to play on my 360.

Pretty much precisely this.

BC is a nice option, having the ability to play some great games all on one box, the wii is good for this, kinda wish they had GBA BC in the 3DSXL, that would have made it a beast of a handheld lol

bc is bloody amazing. without, I'd have missed out on gems like twilight princess, xenoblade, silent hill shattered memories to name just a few. it's also the main reason I didn't sell my wii u, bc is bloody amazing. it's absolutely vital during the early years of a new console.

people who claim it's not vital don't remember just how bad the first year or so was launch wise for both ps3 and especially 360. I can't imagine going through a similar drought without access to bc.

BC is great on handhelds. BC on consoles is pretty hit or miss though. Wii/GameCube BC is great because you can use your GameCube controllers and it runs all the games really well. For PS2 games though I'd rather just stick with a PS2 because the DS3 is pretty clunky for a lot of PS2 games.

With the failure rate of modern tech. I think BC is more important now than ever before.

Can you really imagine trying to find a used working 360, fifteen years from now?

One of the things i want for the next ps4 is GOOD SOFTWARE BC, with full HD rendering and all that for psx-psp-ps2 games.

BC is amazing. It might not be feasible for a company to include due to costs, but it's always fun to reminisce or catch up on games.

I love playing Fifa '95 and Pong with my friends. Never gets old.

Nice! I'm actually hoping that there is a SKU of the PS4 with PS3 BC so that I can play through Uncharted again at a later time.

BC has to pass a very high bar for me to consider using it. The PS3 is not good enough at playing PS1 or PS2 games. The 360 is not good enough at playing Xbox games. The Wii U is on the fence for Wii games. I don't see this getting better with their successors.

BC is awesome, and also necessary for video games to continue to grow. What other medium is there where you buy a bunch of content that stops working on the new content-playing machines, every 5 years or so?

Movies do it right - look at VHS. When DVD's came out, you could still buy VHS's. They also made machines that palyed DVD's and VHS's. Then came DVD recorders, so you could transfer your old VHS's to DVD. Then with Bluray, and the new players can make your old DVD's look even better. So you've got a whole sea of accessible content.

Video game companies need to stop consigning old games to used games dust heaps, and figure out how to make all that old content accessible. Nintendo got it partially right with the Virtual Console - just make user accounts, and perpetual user ownership, and you'd be there.

I think in a current generation both Sony and Microsoft got away with limited BC because of the dramatic graphical quality jump from previous gen. This may not be fully the case next gen. Yes, next gen consoles wil be much more powerful but how much of that power wll translate to the quality of the output is still unclear. I feel the gap this time will not be that pronaunced and main differences will be in other areas (input, possible VR, etc...). And if that is the case playing current gen games on next gen consoles will be a critical feature.
