New episode tonight:
Meet the New Boss

A mixed martial arts title bout is being planned at the local Kinaho Moon Casino, run by tribe leader Benjamin Longshadow and his son Alex. Huge profits are anticipated for Banshee investors, but the enterprise is threatened when the champion arrives and shows off his black-and-blue colors, angering Lucas and especially Siobahn. Will Lucas keep his mouth shut and allow the fight to go on as planned?

Pretty good episode this week - that fight scene was fucking brutal.

From the Reddit AMA:

broke_ass_brock - I am on the fence about watching House. Sell it to me

GregYaitanes - it's canceled. watch banshee.

Really like this show. I've spoken to my friends about it but it rides that line of serious but not too serious. It's very close to a comic book in tone like that. As in it can be spectacular when it goes big while still nailing the more down to earth moments.

What are the odds of this getting a second season? Just asking so I know how to temper my expectations.

Awesome and brutal episode, even if it the plot didn't advance much. At some points I was squeaming, at others I was cheering at the TV. As flawed as it may be (and I'd say this was the most solid episode so far) Banshee is starting to display some serious promise.

This show is now on my radar for the rest of the season.

So give it to me straight TV-GAF. Is this worth watching?

It's like the most macho TV-thing I've ever seen along with Strike-Back. I'd say they both complement quite well; SB is more about blowing shit up and gunning down fools by the dozens, whereas Banshee is more about punching faces in and fucking superhot
Amish
chicks senseless.

Edit: Preview spoilers

It looks like the world's most fabulous hairdresser is going to kick some ass.

We need to devise a good nickname for Job, BTW.

Some people might not want to see this looped, but I'm in love.

Just want to reiterate that I like this show. Premium cable should do more brutal action shows like this because the other networks just can't match it.

I'd say the odds are very very good. The premiere ratings were strong (not sure about episode 2) and the critical response has been in line with Cinemax's other shows.

I like what I see so far, but I really can't fathom how this is not going to end horribly for Hood.

How do they justify the numbers it seems like on any other channel we would be talking about this in the cancellation thread. With numbers like that I wonder how come Boss couldn't get a third season.

? This fight was nowhere near as silly as the one from the pilot.

It was incredibly silly in the context of the story. It's like this show is at times using bad 80s action movie logic, as if it was Roadhouse or something, and then other times it's this good, slick, normal, modern cable drama.

It's pretty bizarre. I like it, but it doesn't make those parts any less stupid or silly.

I am digging this show it is a fun time. Really don't think the whole fight on video thing is going to work out well for him. How many episodes is this season getting?

Hood is a tough guy. There isn't a problem that he can't solve by kicking someone's ass.

What Would Hood Do? Kick ass that's what.

I was really disappointed when Hood declined the offer to fight him right there. I wanted him to beat his ass so bad.

Then when he came back to arrest him I realized a little sparring would have been shite compared to what was about to go down. That fight had me at the edge of my seat. I love this show.

I'm enjoying it. Fun, campy entertainment but it does require a higher level of suspension of disbelief than most TV shows. This last episode got pretty dark with the rape scene and then the fight.

Hahahah, what the hell at this tv show? He's a sherrif and all those people just look at him going at it like some fucking insane maniac.

Although it is going for the unrealistic approach.

I fucking love it :D

Well, premium cable channels like HBO and Cinemax aren't beholden to advertisers, so initial ratings don't matter as much, if at all. They care more about buzz and critical acclaim, who's watching the reruns throughout the week and On Demand, the amount of subscribers they have, DVD sales - things like that.

The ratings and audience/critical response for Banshee is about on par with Cinemax's previous efforts, so I think it's safe to say that it's a success so far. Also, because Cinemax is just getting into the original scripted programming business, (this is just their third original series, though the first to be produced specifically for Cinemax; the other two, Strike Back and Hunted, are co productions with British channels Sky and BBC respectively) I'd imagine that the show would have to get much lower ratings and a much worse critical response before they'd consider cancelling it.

Also, the measure for success is different for each channel, so a hit for Cinemax or Starz might be considered a failure for HBO or Showtime. It depends.

As for Boss, the show may have been too expensive to continue on with for the results it was producing. I also don't think it really fit in with Starz's brand identity.

^ I understand ratings between premium and basic/over the air broadcast. It just weird how one premium cable channel would call the numbers crap and other one would say great, but you might be right brand identity and acclaim might be the difference. I never considered the cost of Boss, but how much could have it cost the most expensive thing on that show seemed like it was Kelsey Grammer.

It's only 3 episodes in, so it really hasn't had the chance to find its footing yet, but it's a pretty fun show so far.

These will make me check the show out.

It's really starting to grow on me. It's like Justified except actually fun.

This makes me want to break something.

Basically, Hood is Dalton. I can only hope for a throat rip by the end of the season.
:lol I'm loving your Roadhouse comparison. I do wonder if anyone is ever going to call him on it and if there will be any consequences. So far everyone just kinda cringes, then shrugs and continues on with their day.

I haven't seen any week 2 numbers, but the premiere did well. I don't know what their expectations are, but unless they the ratings suddenly fall off of a cliff, it seems like a good bet that they'd renew it. It sets a bad precedent if they don't stick by a new series (unless it tanks), and at this point they know they're dumping money into it as marketing.
Also, the measure for success is different for each channel, so a hit for Cinemax or Starz might be considered a failure for HBO or Showtime. It depends.
Right and people should also keep in mind that the Cinemax subscription numbers are a fair bit lower than HBO or Showtime (it's about half of HBO last time I checked), so it's tough to compare straight viewership numbers. They're also trying to remake the brand since it's been considered "Skinemax" (the softcore after dark network) for so many years.

Holy fuck. That rape scene and the fight scene at the end were so fucking brutal. Sanchez was such a bastard, I was almost literally cheering for Hood to utterly destroy him. Both scenes were pretty uncomfortable to watch. Carrie said that Hood used to be kind, but I mean... he still seems kind now. He's nice to Max, Dava, and the waitress that got raped and he goes to just fuck Sanchez up to punish him.

Also, this episode confirmed that I definitely have a thing for hot Amish chicks. Dat girl.

I think after Hood, Burton is my favourite character. He's got such a creepy presence even if most of the time he's not really doing much. But him walking all bloody after the credits was awesome. I like how there's always a short stinger after the credits.

Also love how quickly they show off the consequences of being a completely unhinged lunatic cop-whose-not-really-a-cop with the dude putting video of Hood on YouTube. I bet this is what gets Rabbit to Banshee lickety-split.

Anyone else get an almost incestual vibe between Rebecca and Kai at the beginning?

Next week looks great.

I'm hyped to see the almost-sure fight that will probably happen between Burton and Hood later.

Damn good episode. I do hope that Hood moves on from Carrie to someone else. Such as the banging Amish chick he's banging or the female cop.

I just realised that Antony Starr is a kiwi.

Man, the Commonwealth is invading America's cable for real.

Probably the best show to ever come out of NZ. He did a great job playing two completely different roles in it (twins, one a dumb stoner and the other a smart lawyer), so I'm really not surprised he's gone on to bigger and better things.

Grant Bowler was also one of the main characters in it and he's somewhere around US TV (star in a new Syfy series, I think?).

Yes, a very uncomfortable feeling. I was sure they were going to kiss. Thankfully I was proven wrong.

So no one is going to question why the chief of police got into a brutal fist fight with an MMA fighter in front of dozen of witnesses? Does this not raise anyone's red flags?

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed Strike Back and this is very much in the same neighbourhood. Because it's so fucking over the top ridiculous and takes pleasure in its frivolity; you could say True Blood without the pretension and tortuous operatics. The reckless glee Hood takes in violence and being an impostor is just how I'd describe the viewing experience.

If nothing else, the totally gratuitous limb-and-finger-snapping KO of the MMA fighter won me over.

It's like Justified except dumb fun and stripped of poetic lyricism.

Maybe.

Holy shit. I used to love that show when it was on late night Australian television back in high school. Hood looked kinda familiar but I never would have guessed he was the guy from Outrageous Fortune. The Oceanic invasion of Hollywood continues.
