Does anyone know what other players the Astros might be looking to sign? Now that the Beltran offer fell through, they've got a considerable amount of money to work with.

1000th reply!

actually Mike Lowell is Cuban, and one of the reasons they resigned him to that big contract was because he was a fan favorite with the Miami latin population.

Mike Lowell also went to a local school (FIU), but didn't/still doesn't get 1/8th the attention that Pudge got. He's a good player, but this city was Pudge-mania for the last month and playoff stretch of that year.

There was no backup plan really.

Beltran would have made it more likely that Roger Clemens came back. Clemens is still an option, but we'd have to pay him up the ass. I'd gladly pay it, but it's up to him and if he wants to retire or not, and the way it's looking, there's no reason for him to come back this year. If he were to come back...oh man, he'd get a standing ovation ANY TIME he stepped on the mound. Right now, all we may go for is a bit of bullpen help, cause there's really no reason to go out and try to sign what little is left in the free agent market. We're going to be in a quasy-rebuilding mode, and will probably be big players in the 2006 Free agent market. 2006 is the year Bags comes off the books. Kent's defered money is off the books, and Biggio is gone, Berkman will have his contract done, Oswalt I believe already got his deal done, Backe/Lidge will be signed to extensions, and we'll have some cash to spend around to whoever's a FA in 06. Anyway, It's not looking good right now in Astroland. We'll deal though, I've supported the team by going out to games since 97 (well, I was taken to games, since I wasn't old enough to drive yet :p) and was there in 98, 99, 2000, 01, 02, 03, and 04. 05 won't be any different.

Let's go 'Stros! :D

Yea I heard that too...one of the early rumors was that the Rangers wanted Cy Backe :(

koch was always exciting to watch, for both good and bad reasons last time he was with the Jays

Always nice to see a 100MPH fastball :D

And Green signs for 3 years 32 million...now that's a paycut

Don't worry, there will be plenty of Koch jokes to go around. I think we could have used that 900k on a better player. We shall see, I hope we get Shea though.

"We have internal candidates, we have external candidates," Purpura said. "As far as trades, the difficult part is you have to give something up. I can state without a doubt that one of the things we learned through the general manager meetings and the Winter Meetings is that other clubs covet our pitching. We've got a lot of requests and offers made to acquire some of our young pitching.

"That's hard for me to look at, but I realize we have to put together a winning club here in Houston. We're going to weigh all of that."

FUCK YOU PURPURA if you FUCKING TRADE OUR FUCKING PITCHING. FUCK YOUUU

Backe? Lidge? Oswalt???

if he means C. Hernandez, Redding, Duckworth, guys like that, fine. THERE WILL BE NO FUCKING TRADING OF BACKE DAMNIT

so randy johnson had an interesting day in NYC today. this morning, a CBS camera crew was following him on his way to the physical when randy's bodyguards grabbed the camera and tossed it to the ground. we love you randy. :D really, be as grumpy as you want....... tosser.

if beltran on his interview tomorrow says how he was impressed with the met contingent going down to san juan to see him(or blow him) and how his dream is to play for the mets i think i'll puke. boras once again puts a player in a place where he might not want to be.
just like darren dreifort, A-rod et al. have fun finishing fourth beltran. ;)

goddamit, Griese!
Despite their signing of Carlos Beltran, the proposed deal that would send Sammy Sosa to the Mets is not necessarily dead, the Chicago Tribune reports. Even with a new $119 million expenditure on the books, the Mets could still add Sosa if the Cubs agree to pick up enough of his salary, in addition to injury-prone Mets outfielder (and Chicago native) Cliff Floyd.

noooooooo. keep sammy on the north side.

FUCK DAMN PUPURRA YOU WILL NOT TRADE OSWALT! YOU WILL NOT TRADE OSWALT! YOU WILL NOT TRADE LIDGE...AND YOU WILL MOST CERTAINLY NOT TRADE CY BACKE!

Jesus fuck, I do NOT want that strike out machine known as Soriano.

There's NO WAY IN FUCKING HELL they can believe that Redding will be good. Hernandez looked like he was a righty last year, and aside from Oswalt and Pettitte, Backe was the only other semi-consistent starter we have.

Stros might consider parting with two pitching prospects or maybe Chris Burke...from what Ive heard.

Backe aint going anywhere....or I will cry.

Goddamnit, if we rebuild, I want to rebuild CORRECTLY.

I don't want a half-assed attempt at competing. Of course, not many fans will accept a rebuilding mode.

DO NOT TRADE FOR SORIANO WHATEVER THE FUCK YOU DO

Burke?? I at least want to see what he can do at the ML level!!

Wooo! :D

Damn. This brand new local TV contract deal for the Mets have the upper management sweating! Trying to sign all the high priced well known talent they can!

Maggs in. Sosa out! Make is so Hendry!

Actually, scratch that. I've changed my mind after thinking about things for awhile. If we sign Maggs i want to keep Sosa. If Sosa bats in the three spot with Maggs in the four spot it could do wonders for Sosa at the plate. He'll get a ton more good pitches to hit and if he can get good pitches to hit I think he can become a deadly hitter again. As long as he takes the ball to the opposite Field.

I've got my tentative Cubs batting lineup set right now:

1) Patterson
2) Garciaparra
3) Sosa
4) Maggs
5) Ramirez
6) Lee
7) Walker
8) Barrett
9) Pitcher

That is a potent lineup! Although as productive as Ramirez was last year in the four spot perhaps switching him and Maggs wouldn't be a bad idea. Now that I think about it some more I may switch Lee to 3rd and Sosa to 6th. :p

I don't want to get too excited, but if we can sign Maggs and add him to our lineup and couple this with our great pitching staff (WHICH NEEDS TO STAY HEALTHY) Cubs could make a huge postseason push in 2005!

maybe the yanks have the idea of bringng back soriano after next season and putting him in center. i think he'd be a great center fielder, and im always a fan of soriano. he was just a fun player to watch hit. but his post season hitting was ATROCIOUS.

Maybe Mattingly could fix him

What would they trade for him though? I don't think they could shove a bag of balls to Texas for him, unless that bag of balls came with maybe Kevin Brown...

...wait, no one's taking KB ever. :(

Damn video doesn't work in Firefox.

Randy Johnson isn't a goof for pushing a camera out of the way. But....
"Get out of my face, that's all I ask," Johnson said, according to a video of what occurred, which was posted on the station's Web site.

"No cameras," Laveroni said.

"Don't get in my face," Johnson then said. "I don't care who you are. Don't get in my face."

"I'm just taking a picture," said the cameraman, identified by the station as Vinny Everett.

Responded Johnson: "Don't get in my face, and don't talk back to me, all right."
*That* makes him a bitch. :lol He's going to fit riiiight in isn't he. :D

HAHAHAHAHA

OMG, 2005 is the season the Yankees finally publically implode for all to see. It's going to be fucking SWEET.

Johnson doesn't want cameras in his face in NYC? When he's the Yankees crown jewel offseason acquisition? He really doesn't have a clue what he's getting into, does he?

Have fun, Joe. Have fun.

Purpura indicated he would like to work out a long-term deal with Berkman, but is still undecided on Oswalt. The Astros may opt to negotiate another one-year deal with the the right-hander.

OMFG I HATE YOU
