Batman Arkham City Review Thread

There was a mention of downloadable story episodes. It was mentioned by Kevin Conroy in a interview.
Sounds good. Since the whole game takes place in a part of Gotham City, this game could go on forever with content if WB/Rocksteady wanted to.

The ONLY thing I dislike concerning Rocksteady's rendition of the Batman series is the overall artsyle but I still love the game. I wish they went for a more realistic look for their proportions and costume design, especially Bane. However this is a minor gripe and I can't wait until Tuesday when I'll be able to pick up the game but I don't know if I should keep my pre-ordered at Amazon or opt to cancel it and go to kmart (I just joined shopyourrewards) Im just afraid that they may not have it and I'll lose out on Kmart's $30.00 gift card AND Amazon's $10.00 credit...decisions, decisions

Hopefully this game sells batshit crazy (pun intended) and convince the publishers out there that you don't have to force multi-player into a game for it to sell and be relevant to the public.

If the solution to forced-multiplayer is to create one of the generation's greatest single player campaigns, then prepare for more forced multiplayer.

Being brilliant isn't really an option for everyone.

Awesome

Fuck this game sounds awesome.

Arkham City serves as one of those sequels that renders its predecessor wholly obsolete.
HAH. I was derided here for asking if I should bother play Arkham Asylum. I'm definitely getting the feeling that it wouldn't be worth my time (as great as it may stand alone).

You have to play Arkham Asylum if you want to appreciate the story, the hints at the sequel, the awesome gadgets and gameplay, and more.

Play AA and you'll appreciate AC even more!

AA is more than worth your time, Socreges.
Well, I'm getting the Walmart bundle so my plan is to just throw it to the bottom of my backlog and play AC right away.

Gonna kindly call bullshit here. While I might not be able to appreciate the story as much and might miss some nods, why would the gadgets and gameplay be any less awesome?

I appreciate what you guys are saying, but there's just not enough time in the day. :(

I'm kinda bummed that the story and dialogue are weak. And the boss fights sound like they're still pretty bad or maybe a little better than AA (making them average at best). Joystiq review (they have pretty good reviews now):

Kinda sucks, but I'm not surprised. As much as I like the people involved in this, I thought Asylum's weakest leg was its story- which is kinda surprising since Paul Dini was involved. Apparently the story begins and ends quite well, but it seems like most open-worldy games have yet to find a way to incorporate a compelling story.

I highly disagree.

Red Dead Redemption had a great story with compelling characters and it most certainly was open world.

Still need to play that, but my hopes weren't high. Rockstar has, afterall, been the worst offender when it comes to completely vapid open-world plotlines.

So wrong it hurts.

And I'm not worried about AC's story. Sounds like a lot of it unfolds in similar fashion to AA, despite the open world hub. Not really looking for anything amazing in that regard anyways.

can't believe im falling for scores again. i was bored to tears with the first one but no i feel an urge to buy this.

when does the pc version come out? :(

November. Either 8th or 15th. AFAIK, it isn't known exactly yet.

I don't see why you'd even try this if you didn't like AA. The core game is the same thing. Seems like a waste of money to me.

well that's good news for my wallet. i can pass on that knowing that my GOTY will come a couple of days later :).

'cause i'm an idiot. bought all the GTAs and didn't enjoy a single one. the hype does that to me.

Trying to stay away from reviews, but do they mention if you can continue on with side missions after you finish the campaign? I'm sure you can do riddler challenges like the first, but just checking.

Hmm... I didnt know that kmart has a $30 gc with the game.... i could buy it there, use the gc on uncharted 3, then Trade in the 360 version to amazon when the pc version is released (already bought it from gmg). Any other pc gamers thinking on it?

Yeah, you can. At least, I'm pretty sure you can.

One of the reviews (I think it was Gerstmann's on Giant Bomb) said that after you finished the story you're "dropped back into Arkham City to finish off any side quests and objectives".

I never said gadgets and gameplay would be less awesome, I said you'll appreciate the awesome gadgets and gameplay. Unlike other games where sequel is a fresh start, in AC the sequel continues off AA and will have all the weaponry that you unlock. By appreciate I meant that you mean enjoy the progress and have the nostalgia feeling when you jump to sequel and everything you had will be presented to you...

AA has a fantastic story and yes... some gameplay elements will not be present that you'll miss out on. You will not know why Joker ended up the way he did, where were the other villains, and return of past villains and more. Call my bullshit once you experience it! ;)

Wow, there are too many damn good games coming this season, is there any noise of which version is better? PS3/360

Just like AA. I'm going to be smarter about it in AC than I was in AA, though. Instead of picking up some shit here and there in AA and then having odds and ends to pick up on another playthrough, Im gonna power through and ONLY do the main quest on my first playthrough. No Riddler trophies, no sidequests, nothing. Gonna save all that for NG+.

You probably get XP for upgrades from those sidequests and trophies though.

Does not compute.

Good to know. I think I'll play through the main quest to make sure I have all the tools (and to avoid spoilers) to collect Riddler trophies. Then i'll take on the side quests.

Wasn't everyone shitting on the guy who got the first review for giving it a 10/10? Guess we owe that guy an apology lol

Or a proper Green Lantern or Flash game!
A flash game maybe, they could probably do some cool slow motion stuff. But I don't think Green Lantern or Superman could be made into good games, even with Rocksteady behind it. Those guys are too powerful and they can fly. IMO you can only make a truely fun superhero game if the hero himself has limitations.

Nah, they were giving him hell because of the whole "It's one of the best games ever" thing, not because of the score.

Fuck me...between this, Dark Souls and Skyrim...alright people, who has a goddamn clone machine?

It wasn't the score that was the problem. It was the obvious bullshit.

early/exclusive preview results in "ZOMG THIS IS THE BEST GAEM UV ALL TIEM!"

He even admitted to doing the review before finishing the game...oh...and then he swore at us ("us" being the "internet haters").

No apology will be offered I'm afraid.

And for not finishing the game but not stating that in the review.
