Showing a card with a Joker on it is not buidling up a character.
Yes, I know how the card was meant, Ive read Year One, too, but building up a character is for me when he actually does something and not throws a card away offscreen.

See to each his own.

I prefer a tease like that, Thanos we've seen... what 3 times now, and it loses it's appeal each time we don't get the pay-off.

We got the Joker tease... and then we got The Joker.

Set-up and delivery.

I consider that a solid build.

Okay, but how it was far-fetched? You said it was far-fetched, not that it wasn't effective.

And if anything, I'd argue the Joker tease was more effective than any Thanos scene as build-up because

1) It ties the character directly to Batman and his actions and growth in the movie
- Escalation?
- We start carrying semi-automatics, they buy automatics. We start wearing Kevlar, they buy armor piercing rounds.
- And?
- And, you're wearing a mask. Jumping off rooftops. Now, take this guy.

2) The scene instantly paints the Joker as a threat through his actions, and then the pay-off is in the next movie
- Armed robbery, double homicide, has a taste for the theatrical, like you. Leaves a calling card.

If it was just a regular film woth Thanos as a come ans go villain then sure that would work. But doing infinity gauntlet right after avengers would have been a mistake, it's such an ambitious feat that an immediate pay off would have cheapened the experience they are building to. Again ,weve seen thanos 3 times in the past 3 years for a total of like 3 minutes, hes still very much a big deal. We haven't seen him get physical or really interact with any key characters so there still plenty to get hype about.

By your logic we're already getting Batman,Superman, wonder woman and aqau man in BvS so your gonna care less about justice league riiiiight?

Yeah kind of

It lessens the impact of Justice League if we see the League assembled by the end of this film.

I mean that's the natural of exposure why Age of Ultron lacked the same spark as the original The Avengers.

I think it's kind of hard to say "better than anyone ever" when Marvel is currently the only example of a shared superhero universe building towards a big villain

I see what your saying as far as the shared universe aspect being uncharted territory. but no one has ever put this much effort, patience & planning into building anticipation for a villian.so yeah it's Kinda easy to say they are doing it better than anyone ever. Hopefully the end result will live up to the build up.

Truth.

Maybe they could have kept Thanos cameo in gotg as just him speaking on that video monitor, and saved his full CGI appearance for the end of AoU, that could have help but I still think they haven't blown their wad completely with Thanos yet. People clamoring that he should have done more at this point don't realise how counter productive it would be.

Also just for the future.... you can quote more than one post in a thread and use the edit button.

Every response doesn't need to be a single post... especially if you're the most recent person in the thread.

man dc has soo much good memorable villains who can take on the league

brainac, sinestro corps, black manta, doomsday, Reverse flash, lex, joker, etc that can all take on the justice league and pose an actual threat and can carry a movie as a main villain. unlike Marvel whose villains just plain out suck ...i'm sorry but aside from thanos, winter solider (not really a villain anymore ) and ultron .he was okay, none of the villains in any of the marvel movies could carry their movies along with the hero. they always were like super back seated away and never felt like a threat.

without the x-men, fantastic four villains, current marvel bad guys are weak sauce. but hey at least spidey is coming now to help with his cast of memorable villains.

Joker sucks

Black Manta? The fuck.
Other than that, yeah, DC got great villains, but I worry what they make out of them in the movies. Just look what they did to Bane :(

Bane was amazing. Nolan delivered with all the villains in his trilogy.

For me a build up is when the character is actually introduced and not a a little better way as when the director not could have a aftercredit scene where he just tells the audience that the next villain is the joker. They could have a scene where Batman tosses someone by accident in chemical waste or something like this, this is building up something, not shouting it from the roof.

See to each his own.

The set-up is still in progress, there are a couple of infinity stones still to find, better let him appear when it actually makes sense.

OK, now lets wait until Thanos is actually in a movie and we can start to compare.

Maybe even throw in Vandal Savage, or Mongul and War World

Manta's actually not half bad. He's kind of refreshing, honestly. Other villains have complex relationships with their respective heroes, from the Joker's deranged obsession to Hal and Sinestro's twisted friendship to the Rogues' frenemy status with Flash to Luthor's jealousy of Superman. Manta? Manta's just a guy who hates the fuck out of Aquaman. It's a nice change of pace.

I disagree. Bane was robbed.

Yeah, but I don't see him taking on the Justice League, which was the context of his post.

I would have liked Bane more if he wore a Luchador mask instead of... whatever the hell we got. It's not like Tom Hardy had to glare menacingly at Batman since you can't actually see anything during their fight. Also show some muscles, dude. Dave Bautista would have been perfect for the job.

Batista doesn't have the range for Bane

The Luchador mask would've obviously been out of place in Nolan's movie. Hardy delivered a great performance with his eyes and mannerisms.

lol, Batista. He would've been good in Batman and Robin.

And the gas mask isn't? They didn't even bother explaining that shit LMAO
They didn't? It might've been the most defined feature of his character. His face is jacked up to the point that he's in a state of constant pain, so a mask was made for him to hold it at bay. That's as close as you were going to get to him being dependent on something external. His venom in the Nolanverse.

Bautista isn't even in the same class as Tom Hardy, not even remotely close. Acting isn't just reserved to speaking lines of dialogue. It comes across through the eyes, the reaction, body language, etc... given them the same role and material, 99 times of 100, Hardy gives the better performance.

Oh, we are now at point where we trash Nolan and his movies.

I wouldn't trash Batman Begins or The Dark Knight but I will shit on Rises all day long. That movie had more stupid in it than Man of Steel. I'll take Jonathan Kent sucked up by a tornado over fixing a broken spine with a punch any day of the week. Hardy was it's only redeeming factor but not enough to overcome the sea of stupidity.

1. I expect them too to be small appearances at the end. If not, the movie is really going to be crowded. The good thing about the Avengers was that they didn't have to explain most of them anymore. So I hope they just give a peak in the non-trinity here and then use the upcoming movies to the full extend.
2. I don't know, but I see Jeese Eisenberg.

I so do hope they get him right when they use him. I want WB to not show him at all and let his generals speak for him first.

Also lots of chuckle when we talk about Thanos and Darkseid and sitting on chairs.

Darkseid does this very often for some reason.

that desert batman scene needs to end with kal shouting "FOR DARKSEID" and then lasering chained up maskless batfleck's head off

kind of like this but even more shocking

I wonder how the person who put the trailer together feels.

I wonder how Zach feels.

I wonder if anyone at the studio heard any backlash.

Doesn't really seem like it's getting a raw reception, youtube like/dislike ratio is about the same. Someone pointed out earlier that the market is actually more receptive to revealing trailers. I doubt heads are rolling, but they might be making some changes to the trailer unless it's already been sent out with force awaken.

He didn't break his spine... he give him a ruptured/herniated disc. On the low end, without surgery, it takes 8 weeks to 4 months to heal. The punch was pure fluff and you can't give someone that injury in that manner but you can suspend your suspension of disbelief... at this point it's nit picking and it's become very GAF like to hate on the movie. Y'all act like it's on Fantastic Four or Hulk levels.

You know who is giving the backlash? Not the average movie goer. Those people are fine with the trailers as is or aren't watching anymore trailers and are going to see the movie when it comes out.

Just saw the trailer for the first time. I was not too impressed to be honest. Some parts looked ace but Eisenberg felt out of place. He came over as an annoying brat.

Also, for some reason Doomsday reminds me of a Micheal Bay Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle.

The amount of characters being thrown around here is giving me spiderman 3 vibes.

Plus I don't feel a Lex vibe from that guy, more of a kid with to much free time.
