Tbh, I pretty much find shit from like 2011 and before unwatchable other than a few exceptions (My timeline is probably off tho)
Damn I definitely gatta disagree personally. There's a lot of classics from the from the GT era and further back that still rate really high with me.
But if we're talking 2011 forward some good introductory battles would be:
Daylyt vs Rich Dolarz - before daylyt doubled down on the super intricate word play, straight forward punches with (mostly) general references. some video game shit that's attention getting and day's classic "bus stop" homonym scheme.
Ill Will vs Jhonie Alcatraz - Still the best Ill Will performance to date, and his style is an accessible mix of bars & straight forward shit talking. Jhonie Alcatraz is decent but a bit boring so his rounds could be problematic.
Pass vs K- Shine - Pass' has a really captivating flow straight forward slick shit talk and can still throw in a killer punch. K-Shine did a pretty good job as well so no worry about half the rounds being a slog. 19 min total on the video so not a huge commitment.
Hollohan vs Cortez - good use of personals on cortez's part, self explanatory scenarios but still a compelling back and forth. Raekwon in the back so watching his reactions adds to the fun of the battle.
Hitman Holla vs Aye Verb - This one might be a stretch because it's pretty much all battle scene drama. However, each battler does a good job of bringing you up to speed with the other's history within the battle itself. Also an undeniable classic and I'm not an Aye Verb fan.
Caustic vs Q Shinobi - One of the most entertaining bodybags in battle rap history. A lot of Q's material is entertainingly bad and Caustic has some of the most viscerally insulting material in any battle I've seen. Caustic says everything to Q Shinobi that you'd want to say from looking at him and it's glorious. Not many inside references at all, very accessible.
Illmac vs Bigg K - Bigg K putting on his best performance in the thus far imo, simple but massively effective punches and killer stage presence. Illmac displaying hella creativity and an amazing flow. Not too many inside references for either of them. Certified classic and under 30 min.
The Saurus vs Ness Lee - Slept on god damned CLASSIC. It does help to know that Ness Lee had a tragic house fire that fucked him up bad about 2-3 years prior. That's literally all the background you need to tell someone, though. Freestyles, punches, jokes this battle is the total package.
