Battlefield 2 Demo LIVE

Did anyone ever get this working on a RADEON 9200 ? (Yeah I'm a serious PC gamer, cough)

I downloaded the new Catalyst drivers that came out a couple of days ago and I wonder if anyone has got it to work with that?

I'll save the bandwith and let someone else have a turn downloading it, if its not gonna work with my video card.

I notice it is not in the supported list....but anyone running this with a 6600GT? I have one of the listed cards in my other system if need be, but I prefer my 6600GT system :)

I'm using a 6600gt, works great. :)

I don't think its a DX9 card so it won't work with BF2, same goes with GF 4400's.

I definitely don't have one of those installed.

I didn't either. I reformatted, reinstalled the 5.6 Catalyst drivers for my 9800 Pro, and the game worked. I'm not sure if it was the reformat that did it, or the new download from a seperate source, but it's working.

This game looks decent I suppose.

Shincom's specs-
P4 3.2 ghz
1 gig ddr 533mhz ram
radeon x700 256 meg

The default settings it gave me were everything set to medium , AA off and at 800X600, it ran smooth as butter , so I went in and turned everything to high but kept aa off and the resolution the same, it got a tiny bit choppier but not much really. Maybe its just me but half life 2 is a nicer looking game, I'd thought from screens this game was going to look even better. Oh well, on the other hand it reminded me how much i suck at battlefield.

I'm experienceing a weird graphical problem with shadows. There's tehse huge black blocks under players, and they also seem to appear all over when vehicles are flying overhead (Pictured below).

I tried updating my drivers, ut that did nothing/ I'm running an Athon 64 3800, gig of ram, GeForce 6800 GT. Any help is appreciated.

wow, i was able to get decent fps for my system. i got around almost smooth as butter 30fps with 800x600 with low details.

amd 1800+ xp
512mb ram 2100 ddr
128mb 5200fx (yes, that's what im using. not a typo)

i get the same thing.. did you try the drivers that came with BF2 (i cant since i run win64)?

i just ended up turning off dynamic shadows :(

6800gt, win x64

you guys will need to run catalyst 5.1 to fix the shadow problem. it's a known problem.

Except that if you had read his post you would have noticed that he's running a geforce 6800.

As for the catalyst bug, I'm running an X850XT with the 5.5 drivers and encountered no graphical anomalies at all.

This is why I don't like pc gaming anymore. People are discussing hardware specs and how fast the game runs on their computer rather than talking about the actual game :(

For those wondering, this will be on xbox 360 also.

If I could actually play it, I'd give you a thorough gameplay analasys.

Tell you what, pay for my new PC parts, and I'll give you the best review ever. ;)

Ok, I fixed the problem I was having. I have an MSI K8N Neo2 motherboard, and I disabled the aggresive memory timing feature in the BIOS. That was also causing Counter-Strike: Source to randomly crash on me. I read that the new San Diego core CPU I'm using has issues that need to be fixed with a BIOS update. I assume it has to do with the updated memory controller.

Anyway, BF2 runs very smooth for me, almost constant 60 fps, with all details on high, 4x AA, yadda, yadda, yadda. However, there is some nasty hard drive thrashing at times, which causes frame drops. I've got a gig of RAM. I hope they can optimize their code more or something. I really don't want to have to put another gig of RAM in my freaking brand new computer I just built yesterday.

Biff, I know you said that you updated your drivers, but did you use the ones that came with the BF2 demo install program? I think they are 77.30 or something. Those are the latest beta drivers, if I'm not mistaken. Try those if you haven't. I've got very similar specs to yours now: 6800GT, 3700+ Rev. E, 1 GB RAM, etc., and I don't see any problems like you're having. Sorry I can't be of much help to you on that one.

Also to anyone, how do you set a custom resolution? All I see is 800x600 and 1024x768 as my choices. I've tried changing it in the video.con files or whatever, and it still won't work. I'd like to try out 1280x1024 (LCD native res) to see if it runs smoothly.

I didn't try the drivers that came with BF2, but I did try the latest nvidia drivers. No change, so I ended up turning off dynamic shadows. I then switched back to my old 67.03 drivers from Xtreme G, they have been the best I've found.

Anyhow, moving on to actual gameplay impressions-

Game feels smooth, but I did experience some stutter/lag. I don't know if it was server issues or what, but at times it felt a little jumpy. Alltogether, I'm not inclined to say its smoother then Battlefield Vietnam. When its smoother (which is most of the time) it certainly is, but I don't recall the little misteps here and there in Vietnam that I am having with BF2.

That being said, the game is very fluid and looks excellent in motion. One area of performance they did improve upon was the zoomed in sniper rifle. In Vietnam when I zoomed in, my fps would drop severely. Not so in BF2, it stays smooth and fast. Very nice.

Actual gunfights are some of the best I've experienced in the battlefield series. Range of fire seems to play an even bigger role, I sniped the hell out of 4 guys and although they aimed at me the bullets only came close. The use of distance as a straegic weapon is fun, cool and visually impressive.

Sound effects are top notch. Combined with the fluid visuals and gameplay, it really reminds me of the movie "Black Hawk Down".

So, great game. Its still Battlefield, but feels a little more fluid with better graphics, better range in weapons, better sound...ecd. Theres some annoying things like the music continuing to play after you've exited to desktop and the dynamic shadows issue, but aside from that I'm loving it.

I've a feeling the console version will be a little different..the xbox/ps2 version are limited to 24 players at least. And, anyway, then we'd all just be bitching about no kb and mouse instead of specs :p

That said, I've yet to see how it runs on my system ;)

I also want to know how to set 1280x1024 because editing the config files just kicks me back to the desktop when the game attempts to log in online. =\ Also noticed the constant HD accessing even with a Gig of Ram.

well at least the vehicles should control better :P
xbox 360 version i think is coming sometime next year, with improved graphics and all.

all said the game is fucking great..

Uh, isn't the Xbox 360 version just a port of the CONSOLE Battlefield: Modern Combat game but with better graphics? i.e. it's not the same as the PC game at all?

BF:Modern Combat is coming to 360, not Battlefield 2.

Battlefield 2 - PC - June 2005
BF2 Modern Combat - PS2, Xbox - Fall 2005
Untitled FPS - PC - Fall 2005
BF2 Modern Combat - Xbox 360, PSP - Q1 2006
Untitled - PS2, Xbox, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 - 2006

ok it's called battlefield 2: modern combat, and I expect it to be mostly the same game with battlefield 2, given that they're aren't releasing it simultaneously.

Uh, no. It's a port of the console version, which is NOT the same as the PC one at all. Different developers.

So, I'm restarting my download this morning, now with Download Accelerator, and if anything the servers seem worse than they did last night. It's crawling along at 12.8KB/s on a 1Mb connection. Worse, DA can't see any mirrors, just the one I point it to specifically. Are any other sites hosting this now, or is it still Gamespot?

edit - my connection to their server just died :(

edit - filefront seems better. it puzzles me why DA can't see any other mirrors though. if this server dies, gofreak am cry.

they're both developed by DICE? And seem to be sharing a lot of the assets etc.. the gameplay might be slightly different I guess.

The PC game is DICE Sweden. The console one is most likely the studio (DICE Canada) that did Battlefied Vietnam, which sucked.

No, Dice canada is working on an unannounced game for 2006.

Digital Illusions signs a new contract for the development of a PC game within the shooter genre. Publisher is Electronic Arts. The game is based on Digital Illusions’ brand and is planned for a fall 2005 debut.

The development of the PC game will take place at the Company’s Canadian studio. Digital Illusions receives a development budget from the publisher Electronic Arts.

Title - Platform - Genre - Date
Battlefield 2 - PC - FPS** - June -05
BF2 Modern Combat - PS2, Xbox - FPS** - Fall -05
Untitled - PC - FPS** - Fall -05
BF2 Modern Combat - MS Nextgen, PSP* - FPS** - Q1 -06

It doesn't change the fact that Modern Combat is not nearly as good as the PC game.

They haven't shown the xbox 360 game yet. The ps2 game is probably not as good due to obvious limitations.

It's the same game, but with better graphics. If you think the Xbox 360 will be the PC game, you're going to be in for a HUGE disappointment.

ARRRRGGGHH!

So I get the file, finally, and double click to install, but nothing happens! Nothing! I don't even get an error or anything, not "file is corrupt" or whatever. There were no pauses or interruptions in my download.

:(

Runs well with some pauses from time to time. Still very playable.

And STILL no support for 1280x1024? That’s ridiculous!

that sucks for LCD owners. BTW, is it just my crappy LCD, or do all PC LCD screens have shit upscaling?

I downloaded it twice, and got an error...But now I tried saving the .zip instead of opening it, and it's 34% complete, hopefully working. I can't wait to try it out.

All right, I have the .zip saved onto my computer, but my evaluation copy of WinRAR isn't working. What's another good program to use that's similar?

I had the same shadow problem until I used the Nvidia drivers included in the demo. They were more current than the recent leak on guru3d.com.
