Bergdahl not given jail time for desertion, ticks off a certain someone (CNN)

What purpose exactly would jail time serve for him or anyone else affected by his actions?

Punishment? If the Serial podcast is to be believed, his time in Taliban captivity was punishment enough. Seriously.

Rehabilitation? What would such a sentence be rehabilitating exactly?

Any other rational reasons to put this guy in jail?

US justice system is retributive. So, yeah, punishment.
Didn't he have enough is a valid question, but IANAL.

Precisely. Then we could launch into a discussion of whether justice systems as retributive as the US one are ideal, good, or even effective in most cases. I've come to the conclusion that they are not and am generally not in favor of incarceration for non-violent offenses.

But I have not taken that generic statement to a case-by-case analysis so please don't assume I'd be ok with no prison time for EVERYTHING technically non-violent.
