Man I really enjoyed the second episode, and also liked the first one. Have to agree with Kotaku and IGN here. (watched old Anime, all movies and read the manga till the boat).

So coming from someone that watched the original anime series and reads the manga (all the way up to the newest chapter), I'm finding myself warming up to the new anime. The first episode left me a bit lukewarm, though I still appreciated it more than most people do. I'm not up in arms over any of it tbh. I dig the music, I dig the animation (to an extent), and the characterization in this episode was great. Really good to see Farnese and Serpico in action! Idk.. Maybe I'm just easy to please. But I'm really excited for next week's episode.

Why the hell they didn't choose to go with traditional animation I don't know.
They clearly don't have the time, skill or budget to create decent CGI.

I would sooner believe unethical journalism than I would genuine glowing reviews for the Berserk anime.

Well when you put it that way...

Has anyone heard or read what Japanese fans think of the new anime? Do they have any user scores aggregate sites?

I wonder if that's a preference for Miura. Like he asks them to do it because he likes seeing it that way?

Miura has signed off on a lot of things in this anime that folks are having issues with - notably the look of the cgi and Casca's skin tone.

If Muira is fine with a paler Casca then I'm fine with it too (even if I wished the CGI was better).

I wish there was a new Berserk anime!

It's safe to assume that Miura himself is fine with everything the current anime is doing, particularly since he is personally involved in writing original material for it. Still, it's possible to question Miura's judgement in these matters. Even setting aside any racial issues involving skin color, the way Casca looks in the current anime is notably uglier than in the 1997 anime due to a fundamentally weaker aesthetic design. Excessively pale skin, which is a problem that shows up in multiple anime, is part of that.

She looks fine in the game coming up and Miura has involvement there, so I'm going to wait until we actually get to see her in an actual shot outside of flashbacks to really call them out. I'm not expecting much though.

Rumor has it the initial pitch to Miura was to adapt the entire thing (which led to the movies and the continuation that never happened until now). It's hard to say what happened in between the production of the movies, the interregnum and this shitty product we have now. There are images and a small video showing the visuals of the (initial) pitch which, in no way, resemble this garbage. It has cgi but it's more in the vein of the movies (well in those images almost everything looks good, contrary to what we got even in the movies). That was what he greenlighted back then.

Yeah, interesting that she's dark skinned in the game. Maybe Miura himself doesn't really care either way
Or perhaps he doesn't have as much of a say in these adaptions as we assume.

I hope some rich ass dude that loves Berserk gets things started from the ground up for an entire redo on the anime and contracts animation gurus at Madhouse or another studio of similar or better quality.

This series deserves better.

That's what annoys me the most. I can tolerate mediocre quality, but CG sucks for this manga even if it was decent.

I think he cares, at least in the manga, because he made a whole India/Persia-esque faction.

Even though I enjoyed the first ep, the 2nd was a lot better. That rock remix is sorta growing on me as well... actually liking the music in general.

I hated this style of animation in Aijin, and Knights of Sidonia. I couldn't finish either of those. But with this, I like what they've done, so far. There are some unflattering moments, sure. I liked the flashbacks where they tease us with (is that?) hand drawn animation.

The second episode was a lot more watchable than the nightmare that was the first episode. But I don't want to say "watchable" when talking about fucking Berserk. Gantz has that CGI movie coming in that looks actually really good so it saddens me that motherfucking Berserk can't get something of that quality. Out of all series that fucking exists this one deserves so much better.

I've noticed one more design thing which bugs me, aside from Casca's whitewashing: Guts's face is too long. He should have a shorter face with a squarer jaw.

And yes, this episode is an improvement over the first.

Because I thought people would be interested. Sorry.

Sorry, I didn't mean you. I meant the person who put together this recut of the TV series. I don't understand the point. It's not as if it's some One Piece level adaptation where you get people who want to see the big moments animated but don't want to sit through the painful dragging out of every single manga page. Berserk 1997 is well paced, at least from what I've seen so far.

Thread depresses me. I don't want to even torture myself by watching this then:(

I'm also at Kabaneri episode 6. Hope it remains good. Seemed nice when I last checked it out!

No.

I've only seen BDs in French and Japanese, neither of which support English dub/sub.

Yeah that's what I thought as I couldn't find anything. I wonder why they seem to NOT want Americans to own the 1997 anime? I have the DVD set before that was discontinued but I've wanted the Blu-Ray release as the transfer is quite a bit improved. Shame it seems like we'll never get access to it.

Is Berserk more popular in the west than in Japan? I once heard that but I thought it was bullshit but I have no way of knowing if it was true or false.

It's not that. Berserk is quite popular in the West - 1/4th of the manga's sales are from that area. But its hard to get a grasp on the true effect because of rampant piracy and free subtitles/scans. I'd assume the Japanese production company was keeping the West in mind when making this.

Maybe they are new Berserk fans are getting hooked on what little Berserk goodness that seaps through the episodes.

If you read the ign review, you will be more confused because the writer at one point says she doesn't understand how other survivors of the band of the hawk don't defend guts that he didn't kill the band of the hawk. Don't think the eclipse left many survivors.

Only Guts and Casca survived, and Rickert wasn't there.

Liked the first episode and thought this was better; love that the Guts/Puck chemistry works here as well as in the books

And yeah, fuck that whitewashing of Casca. Looks really absurd especially after knowing her for so long, smh

Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress is great imo. You're in for a treat, although the ending is a bit "meh", but still good. Hope they make more of it or the studio gets more work.

The Kotaku review of the first episode read like someone who only knows about the series through reputation or wikis. Really rubbed me the wrong way.

If I remember right, that one description about the bar scene indicated the original anime?

The rights to the TV series expired in 2012 (under media blasters), and if i'm not mistaken no company has picked it up since. Just the movie/new series are acquired.

Kind of torn on this. I love that we're finally continuing the story, but I can't get over the odd CGI.

Also, one of the things I liked about the original was the philosophy and interplay between the various characters and their histories IN ADDITION to the bad ass killing. There isn't as much development and it's mostly Guts being a bad ass, but even then there isn't much fighting animated thus far.

Eh, I guess I should be grateful they're continuing this after all this time.

I seriously have no idea how someone who is familiar with the beautiful, detailed art from the original manga could look at this CGI nightmare and go "This is great!"

Especially two video game sites that should more than familiar with the PS2's graphical capabilities.

Yeah I had the same feeling too. I thought someone who was scarred for life after watching the Collette scene maybe weren't paying much attention at some parts in the old anime.
