Berserk 2016 Anime |OT| Prelude to the CGI Boat

So how has the anime been so far? Is it up to the quality of the original?

My theoretical face sitting down to watch the first episode completely blind.

My face three seconds in.

My face after making peace that we're getting more Berserk, and super dodgy CGI aside, the second episode was pretty satisfying and scratched that itch that had has been building since 1997.

Although my standards are low and I'd be happy with even a radio drama at this point.

The sound effects during the Eclipse would be something else. That folley artist is going to have nightmares when trying to figure out how to recreate some of those sounds.

Was skipping around parts of Episode 2, and holy fuck, this anime is hideous.

I have zero problem enjoying the movies (and still feel people overreact over its use of 3D) but this looks so bad it has to be intentional or something.

Guess I have no choice but to continue reading the manga (still early in because I'm not a book/comic person) but this actually scared me away.

Sorry if it's been discussed (I assume it has because of how absurd it is) but WTF is going on with them whitewashing Casca?! Why, what, who? I just don't understand...

Extremely small but possible hopeful chance that her skin has been lighter due to the unnatural color styling of the intro and flashback.

She'll show up under the full spectrum of sunlight sooner or later, though I'm tempering my expectations.

If it wasn't Berserk, I wouldn't watch it.

They also seemed to have skipped 3 apostles, so I'm kinda on the fence about continuing to watch.

I was hoping to see everything leading up to Guts's 2nd encounter with Griffith (right before the Golden Age Arc [in the manga]).

This is the only one sentence review this series is going to ever need at the rate it's going.
I laugh every time someone posts this.

It's so friggin true.

Just to be clear. This new anime is a sequel to either the original anime and/or the Golden Era movies and assumes you've seen them? So it doesn't and wasn't intended to start at the beginning of the story (how the manga started off)? Meaning no proper introduction you'd expect from a new series?

It tries to do its own thing with the first 2 chapters of the manga, and then skips until the Conviction arc (Unless they do flashbacks in the next episodes). It does simple introductions of Guts and Puck with small flashbacks to the Golden age which I imagine would be quite confusing for those who haven't seen the original anime or movies.

Damn, Griffith looks buff as fuck in that picture, I don't recall him looking that big.

Just watched Episode 1... and... LOVED IT

- never read the manga
- loved the original anime
- found the new movies OK but a far cry from original anime

Perhaps the thread drug my expectations into the gutter, but yah I enjoyed that MUCH more than i expected to! Bring on Episode 2!! I'm very happy to finally continue Berserk, this will do nicely.

Edit: Episode 2 was also fantastic. The animation is really growing on me. I'm actually getting quite a kick out of it. The score is at times horrifying and intense when the action kicks in. The flashes of the rape are brutal... blacked out, I wonder if they bothered to animate the entire image. I don't believe it is anything any of us would want to see, going by what we can see.

I'm so happy with this series. This thread really had me thinking this wouldn't be worth it, but it totally is. People are holding it to way too high a standard. But I get that some believe it SHOULD be held to such a standard... I'm just happy we are getting it in any form. And it could be much much worst.

- Complaints I read earlier in the thread about the "shifting animation style" were overblown... It's just Puck. I was assuming people were talking about everything. Absolutely not the case.

you need to freeze a very specific frame of the intro to see this... it is a fast and stylized animation where it is impossible to notice with naked eye. A non-issue that never should have been raised.
- On a "wait and see" with Caska's skin color. Every scene with her so far has been a shiny colorized flash-back...

Because we like to torture ourselves. Even if it's bad animated Berserk, it's still Berserk. I'm sure they can manage to make some cool scenes. I didn't completely hate episode 2.

I figure we'll probably get a really good adaption once the manga finishes.

Let's talk about it on here if we're not all banned in 20 years!

Neogaf will be the new facebook then and our GAFeeds will be full on conservatives bashing Chelsea Clinton for being a liar like her mother while George Bush the Third fumbles his way to the white house. Also Trump is on all the money.

They said the same thing for Claymore... :( But I suppose Berserk Is massively more popular in comparison

Ep 2 was so good, when that music kicked in around the 4 minute mark I got so hype. Series is going to be great. So nice to see things I read years ago being animated now.

I was just listening to the interview with the producer and apparently next episode is a new original script by Miura? That would be fantastic as it gives me more time to catch up with the manga.

He also said Miura-sensei is quite involved in the script, having written the reworked events of the first episode (probably came up with the intestine trees thing too).

Hmm.....that could be neat for original events. For the other parts, I imagine a lot of it has to do with figuring out what's best to cut due to limited time and what can make it through.

That's in the manga as well, but the tree didn't start moving, as Guts wasn't there anymore (for the tree to wake up etc.).

Is that in the first volume (first 2 chapters)? I'll have to check again when I get back home.

No the first three volumes are set between vol.13 and 14, where Guts gets the Dragonslayer and lost children arc (where the tree appears).

I take that shit with dozens of grains of salt (the quite involved part). The first Berserk animation also (supposedly) had Miura as script-advisor, and in the first episode there's a major blunder regarding Griffith that there would be no way he would let that pass.

Yeah I wouldn't put it past them just saying it to make their script more credible with the fans or something. What was the major blunder btw?

We should be getting the new episode in 3 hours.

One of the bandits in the bar mentions Griffith being the king. Which makes no sense whatsoever. Past or Post Eclipse (at the time).

The story and world wasn't finalized at that point. You should see the Berserk prototype with Pirate Guts being snarky.

It's funny how light Pirate Guts' tragic backstory of his mom getting killed feels light compared to how it ended up being in the final product.

They also had Puck and shonen-kid (Isidro) in the bar... and that's not how they were originally introduced. So whatever the timeline actually is I think we can safely say it's not really following the manga at all.

it's more skipping and repurposing things to get to the larger story faster.

Although we lose proper world and character relationship building in the process.

This is odd. Because it is Berserk i feel it deserves better and is reason enough not to watch it.

If we all watch, then maybe season 2 will be better.

So far Arslan S2 looks like it got a budget bump compared to S1. Will have to see how much of a bump the further we get into S2.

But what is the larger story? In the manga currently it's Guts and group going to elf-land while Griffith has monster battles with pretty much everyone else.

Just pointing out this is a "sequel" or second season to the movies and original 90's anime series though its production isn't related to that of course. I'd rather this rather unpleasant reception either kills this "series" off and we wait for a more competent one in a few years.

You might want to reread things if you think that's all that happened, btw they're at the elf Island.

If the same persona for that one review about how Berserk may have "caught up with the times" is still reviewing, uh.....expect them to retract that statement. This episode has both of "those" scenes despite taking place in a different location. Mozgus also actually looks pretty human in the preview.

You can also catch nips (or at least the shape) in some scenes despite the anime hiding them I guess due to tv guidelines.
