Best combat in a game

psycho_snake

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
Ive been playing DMC and I think that the comabt in the game is excellent, its easy to perform the tricks and it looks so good as well, the variety of moves you can do is huge, so that makes it even better. Ive not played God of War or Ninja Gaiden, so Im not too sure how DMC3's combat compares to those two. I also think that MGS3 has very good combat. CQC added so much and made the combat so much better, I cant play MGS2 now without CQC. I know that Im gonna get stick for this, but I thought that POP: WW had some good combat in it...It was easy to do and some of the moves looked pretty cool. For an RPG, ToS wins it. The battle system in the game was so much better than in any RPG. I cant really choose which is bets though, its either DMC3 or MGS3. If someone can refresh my mid with a few more games, maybe I will change my mind.

Metal Gear Solid 3 has solid combat and CQC really did a lot to improve the series.

I wouldn't put it at the top of the list though. God of War or Devil May Cry, definitely.

For depth i'd go with Ninja Gaiden

For coolness I'd go with Psi-Ops

For strategy and balance and replayability I'd go with Halo CE (legendary)

For fun factor I'd go with RE:4

All IMHO

Looking forward to God of War tho :D

Depends what type of combat you're talking about.

In terms of realism, i recon the fighting in Bushido Blade was damn good and is still one of the best fighting games around. (I like my soul callibur 2 but i hate the way someone can get stabbed through the head with a sword about 8 times and keep fighting)

Ninja Gaiden for pure fun factor. It's not overly complex unless you want it to be, but the core hack n' slash and freedom you get from that are a blast.

for beat em up-style: Ninja Gaiden - easily the best, most fluid, deep, varied and good looking combat system

God of War, Prince of Persia WW and DMC got nothing on Ninja Gaiden

Shenmue series probably. It's the only adventure game i've played that really starts to compare to an actual fighting game system.

That would be because it was based off a virtua fighter engine.

You guys are insane. :lol

The best combat in a game, heck the best combat game period is Sega's Virtual On: Oratario Tangram!! I know many are thinking strictly of fighters or beat 'em ups, but Virtual On take many aspects into it's combat system. Youconstantly have to think about range, distance, environment, projectiles attacks, dashing, defense, close combat....a lot of parameters that can make or break a match.

IMHO....this should be no contest. ;)

3D Fighters - VF4. Breathtakingly comprehensive and rewarding. Nothing comes remotely close.

2D fighters - SF3. There are a number of games I've taken into consideration here, Garou, KOF, Samurai Shodown, SFA3 et al, but what works for SF3 is that it's as simple as you want it to be, but there's serious room to scale up your skills with the parry system. Ken scrubs can fuck off, however. :)

Beat-em-up - Ninja Gaiden. All you have to do is spend some time with it and you'll see. However I've started playing DMC3 and I'm getting good vibes from it.

Adventure - Shenmue. Case closed.

I'm also glad that Psi-Ops got a mention in this thread. I love the system in that game, it delivers total enjoyment. I'm also very pleased to see Bushido Blade getting some love. There's one series that NEEDS to be resurrected for next-gen.

I feel like a loser for forgetting about VO:OT. :lol

I also nearly forgot about King of Colosseum easily taking the title for best combat in a wrestling game imo.

Grandia 2. Most fun fighting not only in any RPG, but any other type ofgame ive ever played. I went out of my way to look for monsters to fight.

Ninja Gaiden :D

Yep, Ninja Gaiden is the best I've played. It gives me such satisfaction lopping a zombie's head off with a sword. :) The arobatic freedom this game gives you is just awesome.

Super Smash Brothers. I'm serious, deceptively simple, but there's a lot of depth if you really get into it. One day I'm going to videotape my friends an I playing just to show how much you can get out of this game.

Once again, the correct answer is Combat. It's even called Combat you freaks.

"Combat" is the standard by which all other forms of combat are judged
No game can claim not to have been heavy influenced by it

Bubble Bobble is also an excellent example, not only can your deadly bubbles entrap your adversaries, but they double as moving platforms to carry you to the next savage encounter

for this generation, God of War has the most playable combat engine that allows me to do what I want when I want to instead of being always forced to wait out a combo, but I have yet to play Ninja Gaiden and have little experience with DMC3

just comparing the fighting..

Ninja Gaiden >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GoW

anyone who played both (for at least an hour each) will come to the conclusion.. If they are not biased against the Xbox or whatever

For some reason this was the first game I thought of when I clicked on this thread. The fighting in Grandia 2 was unbelievably awesome, no other rpg I've played has come close.

Ninja Gaiden and to a lesser degree Prince of Persia Warrior Within are awesome. I'm getting God of War soon and I hear it's right up there as well.

I'd vote for the Grandia or Tales of games as having the best combat in a game. :D

*runs*

GoW is definitely not right up there in terms of combat depth.

It is, however, the next one in line for action games of that type.

Shenmue had potential to be one of the better battle systems, but iffy AI and camera really hurt the ingame end result, it had very few scenarios that really showed it off very well. Some of the battles were really good, but they really varied alot. The actual fighting itself was pretty top notch though. The fact that SEGA haven't created a game using that engine but totally focused on fighting seems completely retarded.

Ninja Gaiden wins for overall depth by a considerable degree, although Devil May Cry 3 is pretty fucking close if not tied.

God of War wins for brutality of combat and intuitiveness/fluidness of combat.

Looking at only 3d Action fighters

It depends on what you mean by the best. If you mean the best BALANCE the best FUN FACTOR. Those are all different. I mean Ninja Gaiden was fun, really fun, and really cool. But damnit it just wasn't as balanced as Devil May Cry 3 or God of War. I'm sorry but as soon as you unlock the Swallow move thats pretty much the only move you need to use for NG. Just Jump Swallow, Jump Swallow, Jump Swallow...enemy dead. Same thing goes with the first Prince of Persia, by the first 1/3 of the game, you couldn't even use half the move set on the bad guys anymore all you could do was use the stupid wall attack every time. With games like God of War and Devil May Cry 3, I find that I'm constantly switching moves and tactics based on my enemies, giving me a feeling of better balance. At first DMC3 really pissed me off without a block button, but now I can't imagine why you need one. I started playing GoW and I went hours without even touching the block button (until those damn guys with the Scythe/Sword..FUCK those guys :lol )

Beauty and fluidity:
NG
GoW
DMC3

Balance
DMC3
GoW
NG

Overall:
GoW
DMC3
NG
