Harsh much? Use Your Illusion is a great album, spread over two albums and padded out with the occasional turd (My World, for a start...) I've got a lot of time for Civil War, Don't Cry, 14 Years, Yesterdays, Dust n'Bones and a few others.
Well, I haven't listened to any of that stuff in years -- I've moved on from that kind of music, and I don't miss it. But, I remember those days pretty well. My friends and I were big into GnR. BIG. We waited for the two Use Your Illusion albums, and all I remember when we finally bought them was thinking, "What a huge disappointment!" I'm sorry, but going from one of the most volatile, hedonistic albums of all time to covering Paul McCartney songs (!!!) is the classic example of jumping the shark.

For what it's worth, it's the same reaction we had when Metallica's "Black Album" came out...and for those who weren't disappointed by THAT one, Load pretty much sealed the deal.

I fuckin love Appetite for Destruction. Any song on that CD is a classic, although Welcome to the Jungle gets me pumped everytime I listen to it, and I have to say that I really like the "live" version of Estranged off the Live Era Double CD.
Appetite for Destruction is a fucking great album -- I'd say it's better overall than the Use Your Illusion albums (though those have my favorite individual songs, if that makes any sense).

Anyway, my favorite "hard" GNR songs are (in no particular order) Mr. Brownstone, Sweet Child O'Mine, My Michelle, and You Could Be Mine.

Oh, I also really like Patience.

One in a Million is a good song, but I just can't bring myself to listen to it (which might seem a bit odd, considering that I love Used to Love Her).

The definitive GnR list:

1. Estranged
2. November Rain
3. Welcome to the Jungle (rock)
4. Don't Cry
5. Civil War

Between their first album and the Use Your Illusion albums, I can't choose. It depends on if you like the metal GnR or the rock ballad GnR. I prefer the rock ballads. PEACE.

I'm a big GNR fan, so I like almost all of it.

In terms of Use Your Illusion, that CD set has some of my favorites - it was a good change and had a good mix-up of songs. Maybe, it's just me but I think some bands would give their left nut in order to write a song the caliber of Dead Horse, 14 Years, Right Next Door to Hell, etc.

In terms of Lies, there are some really good hard-rockin songs on that album: Reckless Life, Mama Kin, Used To Love Her, You're Crazy, One in a Million.

I agree with Metallica at their best until Black, but the difference here is that everything Lars & crew produced since then sucks.

Some more tidbits for the Axl fans out there:
W. Axl Rose - initials spell WAR
By conincidence, his pseudoname is an anagram for "oral sex"

I'm a huge GNR fan, if I had to choose I'd probably consider them to be my favorite band.

My favorite song... well it's hard to choose.

I guess I'm a big fan of One in a Million, Right Next Door to Hell, The Garden, 14 Years, Mr. Brownstone, My Michelle, Rocket Queen...

Fuck, what am I talking about, I can't choose.

Let me see which GNR song has been played the most in my playlist....

Mr. Brownstone it is...

"I get up around 7
Get outta bed around 9
And I don't worry about nothin', no
'Cause worrying's a waste of my time"

Everyone who likes GnR should also pick up the Live Era cds if they haven't already.

Not their best song, but an underrated song is You Ain't The First.

EDIT:

As much as I like Estranged, one cannot deny it is the worst video ever.

As much as I love "Estranged" and "Civil War," hearing "It's So Easy" on the jukebox this weekend at the bar reminded me just how much better Appetite is than UYI, even though I did dig UYI a lot when I was younger. Anyway, "It's So Easy" or "You're So Crazy" would probably take my top spot, but everything on Appetite kills.

If Use Your Illusion was condensed into something like this it would be awesome:

1. Civil War
2. Dust N' Bones
3. Yesterdays
4. Don't Cry [Original Version]
5. Double Talkin' Jive
6. Breakdown
7. Locomotive (Complicity)
8. So Fine
9. You Could Be Mine
10. November Rain
11. Don't Damn Me
12. Dead Horse
13. Estranged

They actually released a "Use Your Illusion" CD that has the best of both albums on one disc.

I know, but IMHO opinion it sure as hell did not have the best songs from both discs.

"Use Your Illusion" was a great set of albums. One of my friends kept saying the tired old line about how both CD's should have been condensed into one (said of many, many double albums) and we had a brief listen thru both discs. He admitted that there was more to the set and less filler than he'd remembered.

And Shantyman, you'd put "So Fine" on your hypothetical Best-Of disc????
