Bicycle age

Key to the locking tab thing is making sure you don't use a metal mount, ever. There are some with (really soft) replaceable inserts on them.

I have a newer K-Edge which uses plastic instead of metal for the bracket for this very reason. They're hope is to have the bracket break before the back of the Garmin does (they offer free replacements + cost of shipping). Unfortunately when you're moving 20+ and slam your bike down there isn't much that is going to stop the mount from breaking.

Anything, really.

MapMyRide is doing a contest right now where if you're one of the first 150 to 500 miles (GPS verifiable) you get a jersey:

You are registered for the 2015 MapMyRide Cycling Challenge.
Good luck! Don't forget to log all your rides with the MapMyRide app or import from a GPS device to earn achievement badges and prizes. If you really want to push your limits, the first 150 riders to get the 500-mile badge will win a special edition leader's jersey, so pedal hard. You can also celebrate the Challenge with a 2015 Commemorative Jersey.

I posted last week asking for bike advice since I wanted to get into biking. Welp, I ended up getting one last weekend.

Got this: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/fitness/fx/7_2_fx/

I tried that and some Giant bike but preferred this one.

Only got to ride about 10 miles or so as the weather hasn't been great (it started pouring on my ride) but I like it so far.

I feel like this bike is a good start for me and if I keep up with it I can get a nice road bike down the line. Only complaint so far is I don't really like the grips as my hands get pretty sweaty and they don't seem to have enough "grip" for me.

That's very cool. I really should be using MapMyRide, but I've been using RunKeeper for years to log my activities. Unless there's a way to export RunKeeper data, I feel I'm pretty much locked into that app. Which is unfortunate, because RunKeeper could really use some better resource management. On a 60 mile ride last weekend, RunKeeper was having a tough time updating the data on-screen. Thankfully it logged everything, but that's not the first time it's become dog slow. And what's worse is it begins to drag my phone down with it. iPhone 6+ here, for reference.

There are so many ways to link accounts and data that you might be able to do just that. I lost track of how many apps have access to each other at this point. (But not Facebook. I don't have an account so they can't track me. Right?)

Gloves gloves gloves gloves gloves gloves gloves gloves.

Gloves.

My own bike attacked me today. Dismounted, took a step forward and BAM, pedal right on my left shin, drew some blood too.
What's really great is the flats that have sharp bolts all over for added grip. Sometimes surprising if it doesn't draw blood even if it's just lightly brushing your leg.

I'm glad you mentioned this. I did a quick search and it appears that Tapiriik is the go-to for importing data between services. I'm currently importing my Runkeeper data into Strava. I'll be sure to post impressions afterwards.

This is the bike I have. No complains from me. But I am looking to buy a road bike early next year.

Bike must be leaning against rocks or a fence, or hanging from something. Anything else risks a ban.

Good to hear, good luck.

I've been going gloveless because my last pair had a weird rub spot and I noticed one day there's a callous about 1/4" on the inside of my right thumb. Well, it's 1/4" now, it was about 50% bigger when I noticed it.

Cool. How tall are you and what size frame did you get? I got the 20" and I'm 5'10".

The girl said it was ok at the store when I had only an inch of clearance from my taint to the cross bar so I guess that's ok? I dunno I'm not knowledgeable on how tall the bike should be.

6 feet. I got the same frame size but my saddle is like a good 6 inches high.

You don't want your foot to slip on a fixie. But since it has a freewheel, no probs! Lack of rear brake had me confused.

I guess if you're wearing dress shoes or something it might be an issue. I've never had my feet slip as a general rule, but I can only speak for cycling in trainers (sneakers).

Good start to TdF so far! Froome got the better of the fab four on Mur de huy but we'll see the real shake up starting on Tuesday...

and watching Pinaut throw a tempur tantrum over a larger bike was hilarious. This guy. So glad to see Tony Martin finally get yellow!

The frame sizes should already take into consideration the wheel sizes. Cube seems to think you'll want an 18-19" frame, but what I'd personally do is put my numbers into a frame sizing app / site and then compare the geometry figures given to what the bike has. 20" on one bike can be completely different to 20" on another in real terms (top tube length, bottom bracket height etc).

Thoughts on stationary bike for exercise?

I'm wondering if you can improve cardiovascular and work towards burning calories. I used to do jogging, but my foot bones can't stand the impact despite running shoes.

Fresh air and scenery are not a factor. I prefer convenience of having the machine available anytime and several steps away from me.

Ah cool, so a 20" frame on one should be the same height as on another?

Also as the bikes are in the same range will the geometry be the same? Suspect I should just look out for a 20" 29"er if this is the case. Gonna go Cube but need a decent deal.

So yesterday I find out that those years wearing boots in the military caused my feet to start spreading out years before they're supposed to (you get old, your feet get wide) and that's why I've been having so much foot pain lately. Not only that but pretty much anything I do - to include, oh, say, going on long bike rides or really just riding a bike at all - makes it worse because the shoes will never fit my feet right. Running? Hiking? Well they're straight the hell out the window. I'm so mad I've been having a low-grade panic attack since my appointment. My arms/hands are shaking like I have Parkinson's (wouldn't that be a kick in the ass right now, too) and even my knees are shaking.

I woke up this morning and my damn tablet was dead because I forgot to turn off the GPS program. So I go to use my ipod for my bike ride - it does GPS too, albeit with wifi - and it won't connect to my router. Whatever! I get to work and when I go to listen to my ipod it's dead. It won't turn on, it won't reset (the home button is broken so I can't reset it as far as I can tell), it's just fucking dead. And I know it's charged because I plugged it in last night before I went to bed.

I can't wait to go downstairs after I get off work and find out both wheels are flat or something and I can't ride home.

No, not neccesarily. I think my point was more that frame size is only really a starting point.

Like I said, as far as Cube are concerned, you're 18-19" frame: http://www.cube.eu/uk/service/faq/faq-detail/article/how-do-i-determine-the-correct-frame-size/

Custom orthotics. Problem solved (at least in part).

Far from cheap, but I know a number of pro riders that basically wouldn't be able to use a bike without them.

Since I can't afford a GPS enabled device with turn by turn directions, I got the next best thing: a phone mount.

Now I just have to look up a route online, save it on my phone and ride.

Perfect weather for a blast this morning but my phone committed suicide overnight and I don't have a spare. It's gonna feel odd riding without one.

Edit: stand down, phone fixed.

So I fucked my bike up this morning (well a car did) so I'm looking to buy a new one. I got my old one for free from work, and it's always been a bit knackered, so it seems like a good opportunity to actually buy a half decent one.

I've been looking around and my local bike shop has these Specialized ones on sale:

Specialized "Pitch"

Are Specialised actually any good? If not, what would you recommend? Looking to spend around £300-£500.

Yeah, Specialized bicycles are good. For what purpose will you be using your bicycle for, though? Personally, I'm not too keen on mountain bikes as anything but offroad bicycles. If you're commuting to work and back, then a hybrid is a good decision, as well as a road bicycle.

That's how I do it. When I bought my road bike I looked into getting a computer, but I figured using the phone would be just as good and it was already something I owned. Quad Lock has been my go-to ever since. It's easy, sturdy, and also doubles as a case. The entry price is high, is the only thing.
