Key to the locking tab thing is making sure you don't use a metal mount, ever. There are some with (really soft) replaceable inserts on them.
I have a newer K-Edge which uses plastic instead of metal for the bracket for this very reason. They're hope is to have the bracket break before the back of the Garmin does (they offer free replacements + cost of shipping). Unfortunately when you're moving 20+ and slam your bike down there isn't much that is going to stop the mount from breaking.
