No, that was the first Bioshock. This one continues to add new enemies, new weapons, new twists, and other things that get rid of the grind that was in the first Bioshock.
I agree that the first bioshock was amazingly dragging in the last couple hours that we didn't need. I always prefer short but sweet games.

Gameplay-wise, I strongly suspect it's because the vending machines were everywhere, which meant their jingles, which in BioShock 1 could be heard from rooms away, would be heard constantly. So they removed the jingle, which is fine by me if it means more machines. They really helped keep the game fun by allowing me to restock and spend all the money I was collecting.

The lack of audio on the Circus of Values is a known bug:-

I've got a question:
I am more than halfway through the game, and I have only researched about 27% of the little sister. That's because I killed one or two little sisters without snapping the camera. Do I stand a chance to fully research her? any tips to make sure of that?

I wanna get the (research all) achievements :D

I always prefer short but sweet games.
Amen

Yeah, you should be able to make it if you research the rest of them in the game. I thought I wasn't gonna make it either, but I got with time to spare. You should go up about one level per sister.

That's good to heard. However, I screwed up somewhere else. I am at the Fontaine Futuristic level and I'm 95% researched the thuggish splicer. I'm not gonna make it :(

It's pretty fun but unfortunately nobody's playing it on PS3. It take too long to get into games and most of the time they're laggy as hell.

Late to the party I know but last night I finally finished the game. Been reading through some of the comments here and thought I'd add my own.

First of all I have to say just how much I enjoyed the first Bioshock, it was one of the first games I played on a new bought 360 back in the fall of 2007. I loved that game and so I had been looking forward to this one quite a bit the past few months, unfortunately I feel a bit let down.

Something about this game was just lacking the magic for me. I found the multiplayer okay, it was different change of pace compared to the most common online shooters. The single player though lacked a spark. Thinking that maybe it was just my playstyle using mainly guns and not much plasmids I completely switched out how I was playing the game once I got the Fountain of Youth and Drill specialist Tonic. I really enjoyed the game then for the next hour or some until I found myself rolling over all opposition. At times it felt almost more like a chore then fun.

There were moments that I did enjoy, particularly the last 1/4 of the game stepped it up a notch but overall I was underwhelmed. I think I needed more moments like killing
Mark Meltzer poor bastard
and playing as
a little sister
just a bit earlier. Those things helped lock me into the story for the first time but by then it was almost finished.

I'm playing through the game on hard at the moment (which isn't really all that difficult) and am enjoying the story more this time around. While I think trying to slot sofia lamb into fall of rapture didn't work out the best but overall I'm enjoying it about equally to the first. I also think that if this game was made by irrational, the game would of received way more praise than it got.

Does anyone know if there's a way to continue the game and start with all your powers? Just beat the game on hard and wanted to try and get all plasmids.

You can't start with your powers, you have to get them all again.

I don't think you can do a new game+. When you start the game, you start from the scratch.

More games should do what Mass Effect did, give bonuses for the multiple games you played in the same franchise.

So after about 20 minutes of waiting I finally get into a game. I play the match, and once everyone's back at the lobby it just sits there "Searching for game...". Note: there are 8/10 people in the room.

Fix this shit 2K.

Edit: same exact thing happened after my second match. In over an hour I've been able to play two matches, and so I am f*ing done with this game. It was fun while I had the patience for it.

The multiplayer is under rated for sure. I have no problems finding a match on the PC but it doesn't have the following it should either.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Just beat the game and got all single player achievements. Dunno what the general consensus is in this massive thread, but it's a big old 'meh' for me.

The combat shined, everything else was pretty weak. Plot, characters, level layouts, there were barely any real 'surprise!' or scripted moments. I dug the new enemies, and playing on Hard got tremendously simple by the late game(though I did max out all research and Freeze plasmid is so broken its silly), but setting up traps and taking down the hordes of enemies kept me going far moreso than the narrative. Bioshock 1 really outshines this game.

A difficult recommendation and certainly deserving of the apprehensive reception it had since announcement.

I'm not feeling this game at all. Feels pretty much the same as the first (same faults as well) while losing the atmosphere and mystery. Is it just me or does it look even worse than the first game? It might be because I played the first on a PC and now this on PS3.

Finally managed to carve out some time and finished it tonight. I was a big fan of part 1 in particular of the story and atmosphere. I have to say that same novelty and fresh feeling wasn't there in part 2.

I felt the game finally began to take shape at
Fontaine Futuristics. The introduction, story and level design felt true to Bioshock at that point. I was also probably feeling nostalgic since Fontaine and Ryan were so much more entertaining and well thought out than Lamb ever was. The Dr character also fit in well (name escapes me).
. It's a shame this happens this late as the game is practically over at this point. I found the combat to be much more fun than the original though however I felt you went from a worthless pansy Big Daddy at the start to a unstoppable force at the end. Too weak at the beginning and too powerful at the end.

I'll give the MP a shot now that I'm done with the SP, but I don't really care about it since the SP story and atmosphere is what made me buy it. Would I recommend this game? Hmm that's a tough call. I think Bioshock fans will enjoy spending more time in Rapture, but I didn't think the journey was nearly as memorable as part 1.

It's too bad you can't retrofit the two-handed combat scheme of BS2 into BS1. Would make pretty much the perfect game. As it stands now they both have their own set of flaws.

Man, I agree with that statement 100%. I thought the first had a great narrative, but the combat just held it back. I played and reviewed both for the first time ever the week the second game released, and I rated the second higher simply because I found it to be more fun to play.

Just beat it and I quite happy with the result. When I first started I was pretty much on the fence but as the story progressed and my Delta got fucking strong ( game was pretty easy for hard mode ) it definetely stuck with me.

Great ending too !

Fantastic job 2k Marin!!

Guys,
I finished the game with a bad taste in my mouth. I was kinda disappointed. Here is what I didn't like about the game:

1- The famous bug that was posted before in post 2214 happened to me:

OMG Guys please I need help!!!!

I am either failing to do something, or have come to what appears to be a bug that is preventing me from progressing further into the game.....

SPOILERS

I am in the last chapter of the story mode, Inner Persephone, where the goal is to help Eleanor gather all the little sisters by defeating all the splicers and then pressing the "Call" buttons in both the Infirmary and Therapy Pediatric Wards. I have manged to successfully secure the pediatric ward in the Infirmary and pressing the call button in the ward worked no problem.

However, upon entering the Pediatric Ward in the Therapy Wing and clearing out all the enemies, pressing the "Call" button does absolutely NOTHING! I have looked everywhere for like an hour looking for every kind of clue as to what I'm missing or doing wrong and have found nothing. I am starting to get the feeling the game has bugged out on me because pressing the call button in the Infirmary section worked, while pressing it here gets no response from Eleanor, despite her being summoned and standing right there!

Please help me out guys. Is this is glitch or am I forgetting to do something properly? Am I supposed to secure the Infirmary or the Therapy ward first? Perhaps I did it in the wrong order?

HELP!!!

I had to restart the last chapter to be able to finish the game.

2- Some audio parts were missing from the game "vending machine-circus of value" sound was not there. A proof that the game was developed in a rush.

3- The gameplay: It is basically killing dudes and go over them quickly and press (A) (A) (A) to collect the most of them. Then you realize that you have a lot of money, so you go and spend it on unnecessary ammo. After that, you follow the arrow to find the same dudes who got stronger somehow and repeat what you did at the beginning. Lack of puzzles, and challenge (I don't mean the challenge of stronger enemies here).

4- The story: Didn't work for me. I hated the ending (though I got the good ending by "not harvesting" the little sisters).

5- The length of the game: I think that the game was longer than it should be. I may feel that in many games. However, the ending of those games make up for the length and make it worth it........ this isn't the case in BioShock 2.

I don't know. I enjoyed the first game. Maybe because of the unique atmosphere that got old on the second game.

well i had to rent the 360 version in order to finish the game (PC VERSION FTL) and i am damn glad that i did.

the combat is spectacular and, for me, the story managed to engage me in a way that the first one could not.

honestly these days the vast majority of games i play i end up with a very bad taste in my mouth after completing then.

not so here! the whole father looking for his daughter really resonated with me and once i became a *end game spoilers*
little sister and saw the world through her eyes
i was blow away and sad at the same time. sad that they did such horrific things to those poor little kids.

and the good ending that i received was very poignant and damn near brought tears down my face.

well done 2k. well done.

finished this over the weekend.

Game really really picks up towards the end.

Combat and basic gameplay is far superior to the first game for sure. Found myself using a much greater variety of weapons and ammo types. The game itself is a bit patchy in terms of pacing. And by the time you are 2/3rds in, you hit a point where you are massively overpowered compared to all enemies, even on hard. A lot of the middle bit feels like padding really, and not that connected to the main thread.

The way the story is told is a bit messy too. I found it quite unclear exactly what was going on for quite a bit of it. Still not clear on the origins of the Big Daddys/little sisters/big sisters.

Personally I found the whole Big Daddy element quite affecting, and really liked the last part of the game. Lamb was a less impactful villain than Ryan. I think Ryan's presence was felt throughout B1 at every turn, not just in the audio logs, radio chatter etc but also just in walking through this city built as a monument to his ideals. Lamb has corrupted the place for her own opposing ideals but Rapture is such a testament to Ryan's vision that her influence feels diluted and you get less of a feeling of her watching your every move.

Overall though, good game for sure, just wish the middle portion had kept up the pace of the beginning and end.

I really want to get this, but there's no way in hell I will until I see some patches coming our way. They keep on saying the same thing...

Until I see those patch notes I will keep my MS spacebucks to myself

I'm in the beginning of the game and I keep dying, I feel so incredibly weak. A single bullet takes down like a sixth of your health and a melee attack does way more. Happen to anyone else or do I just suck?

Wow, 2K dropped the ball on this crap. And what's with all the multiplayer DLC that just end up being unlock keys? Fucking scumbags. Never buying this or any other Bioshock game ever again. I hate how every big hit these days just has to have a sequel, with multiplayer too so they can charge for maps!

So, some Toronto locations have this for 39.99 Canadian...is it worth it?

I absolutely loved the last one, but the general consensus on here seems to be that the sequel is disappointing and doesn't have the novelty factor that the first one had.

I'm tempted to still pick it up at this price, but given it already dropped $30, I'm thinking it could be 30 or less by the summer...

Thoughts?

Of course it won't cast the magic you experienced when being in Rapture for the first time, but it's a great game.

segment when you play as a little sister

Ya, I can handle the game not being as fresh as the first one, just as long it's still fun in its own right and keeps me interested. I was a big fan of how atmospheric the first one was, so hopefully the sequel continues the tradition.

100% agree, I have been waiting for it to go down to $30-$40, so it looks like I will bite on a deal pretty soon.

Anybody with the PC version downloaded and installed the latest patch (v1.02) ?

I downloaded it off fileplanet earlier today and ran the installer but when I run the game, it still says v1.00 on the main screen.

Were you running single player? I think single & multi-player are handled as two totally different games.

And doesn't GFWL handle the patching automatically?

Anyone else having graphical problems with that game? The textures are loading very late or not at all. And because of that, it sometimes looks like a crappy N64 game. I play the XBox 360 Version.

The PS3 patch doesn't seem to do anything about my connection problems, especially the obnoxious bug where it drops out while prepping the next match and doesn't save my stats from the previous match. It always seems to happen after the matches where I kick ass, too.

And now I'm encountering new issues, like occasionally respawning and not being able to do anything but look around.

Dunno about the PS3, but the same (or a similar) problem was present in the 360 version and was fixed.

I wanted to play MP last night, to see if the game is worth keeping or trading in. I kept on getting a 'can't connect' message, even though I was able to connect to PSN with no problem. Any other people experiencing this? Is is because I haven't picked up a map pack or something?

Platinum Trophy: Learned to Shit While Upright Again.
I don't know if this was a placebo effect or I got lucky (PS3)

I tried for almost 1 month to try multi-player, kept hanging on searching games...blah blah blah

I got very pissed.

I also was trying Brutal Legend and that game also was fucking up on me, I was like 2 different games fucking up on me, is not possible, I tried resetting modems/routers

Then just as a last resort I switched from my DMZ address to a regular address, and BAM! BS2 & BL both started working magnificently

So if your a PS3 owner and have given your PS# network address the DMZ access, either un-check it, or add a new ip address from your LAN, maybe it would help

Here's Hoping =}

I was looking on PS3trophies.org, and they say there are more trophies coming for something called "Protector Trials", so I guess there's more DLC on the way. Kind of sounds like the DLC the first Bioshock got on the PS3.
