Bioshock Infinite - Review Thread [UP: IGN exclusive split PC/Console review up]

Im listening to the IGN review, not watching it.

I don't want anything spoiled visually. I know, pretty cool right?

9.4 consoles, 9.5 PCs.. smh.

The 100 points scale is shit.. i never know what votes to give, using it, in the vote the XYZ above you thread.

What's the difference between an 8.5 and an 8.7? I don't know, it's more confusing than a 5 star or 10 points system, but oh well.

I rate this post an 8.242269 out of 10.

It's funny how many people post about IGN, as though they are relevant to anyone other than the mainstream audiences that don't know any better. I know, it's mostly to poke fun at them, but we already know how terrible that site has been for the last decade.

Stolen from the other thread. This is what was promised for 1999 mode. Either Irrational lied or cut it or IGN doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about.

It’s not simply a matter of adjusting the difficulty sliders in the game – the team went much further than that. Resource planning? If you’re to survive this mode, proper planning will be crucial. Combat specializations? You’ll need to develop them efficiently and effectively throughout the story; any weapon will be useless to you unless you have that specialization. Combat? You will need to carefully target every shot, and your health will be set to an entirely different baseline. Game saves? Well, yes, there will be those, but according to Irrational Games Creative Director Ken Levine “there are game saves, and you’re gonna f***ing need them.”

“We want to give our oldest and most committed fans an option to go back to our roots,” said Levine. “In 1999 Mode, gamers face more of the permanent consequences of their gameplay decisions. In BioShock Infinite, gamers will have to sweat out the results of their actions. In addition, 1999 Mode will demand that players pick specializations, and focus on them.”

He sold me on that quote. I was in high school and too in love with 1UP to not see the bullshit that this statement was.

Oh also, I called it a while back that the big twist is that it relates somehow to Rapture of Bioshock (maybe it ends where Bioshock begins?)

We'll see if i'm right! What do I get if I am???

Uh, it's basically the same as promised. I believe you can choose to specialize in certain weapons, in 1999 mode not having a specialization for a weapon means the weapon is much harder to use, basically anything the player can specialize or alter matters and can't be easily readjusted.

Also like the sound of this:

"Our mystery girl rarely leaves your side once she joins you a short time into the campaign, and unlike the vast majority of AI companions throughout the ages, she requires zero babysitting. To the contrary, she'll take care of you, tossing you ammo and health in the heat of battle, randomly throwing you money at idle moments, and even bending the layout of a combat area to your will using her dimensional-portal-opening abilities."

In firefights, that means you might have the choice to teleport in any one of a flying gun turret, a wall of cover, a powerful weapon, or a stash of medkits. It’s yet another option that'll affect how the fight plays out in a big way – a layer that makes Infinite’s combat so refreshingly nimble. The guns may not be wholly original, and the vigors may be familiar, but in concert with the Elizabeth wildcard and the open, large-scale play spaces, Infinite offers tangible, meaningful choices in each encounter."

While not as extensive in terms of various methods to aid the player, Elika from PoP 2008 was just as effective. I really felt something for her as the game progressed on. I hope I feel the same way for Elizabeth.

I'm actually holding off on this to see if there'll be a PS4/Nextbox port (same with The Last of Us, Metro: Last Light, Blacklist).

I am wondering whether I should do the same. It is perhaps the first FPS in around over a year that has made me very interested given the character and its story driven plot which isn't only about shooting your way to the next shooting gallery.

I'm pretty sure the .1 difference was just so IGN could state clearly that the PC version is superior.

Which is kind of pointless since it obviously was going to be regardless.

I don't really see what is so different about that?

They don't go into the specialization aspect of things, but it could simply be a matter of reduced cash = reduced resources = a need to specialize because you can't buy everything. Shields recharging slower and enemies hitting harder is a "different health baseline". The thing about needing to tailor specializations or weapons will be useless isn't touched on, and I could see them backing off from that one a little.

I agree, the quoted parts are technically accurate, but only in a sort of "a-ha! I was telling the truth all along!" way.

There should be an IGN parody site with every major release getting a 10/10 with ultra gamer nerd hyperbole in every sentence.

Someone hyperbole this game up for me. What should I expect, not as a gamer, but how the game will effect my view of life and the world in whole? Is this the Martin Luther King Jr of gaming?

Sounds like a lot of fun, as long as 1999 mode doesn't have some type of 'you can only save 3 times' bullshit I'm in for that mode too.

I don't think we have enough to go on to really know the extent of the changes. I doubt the IGN reviewer put much time into it, honestly.

But really... what did you expect? It could be totally unbalanced or easily exploitable, but really the promise was basically harder, less health, less resources, more need for specialization. I don't really see anything that indicates this isn't the case.

If anything it sounds like Brass Balls mode. No going back, toughest enemies, game over if you die. No checkpoints.

Like I said - I agree, it's really just a matter of how much you agree with the way it's hyped rather than the actual facts, which are accurate (aside from the "useless without specialization"). I personally wasn't very interested in it anyway, since I don't like generic "everything is SUPER HARD WITH A MILLION HP" difficulty, and games like SS2 had to be built from the ground up with their more sophisticated approach to "hardcore" gameplay.

So what makes the PC version 0.1 point better than the console versions?

In the video its also the fact you don't need to pause the action to select different abilities.. where on console with lack of buttons you can only select 2 at a time or pause the action.

Personally I think this is a legit reason for PC being better.. I hate how console games restrict fluid gameplay due to controls.

And to think there will still be a lot of PC gamers who plug in a controller and choose to limit themselves, but each to their own.

Those people are crazy..

The guy in the video was playing with a controller as well you could tell by how stiff and shitty the aiming was.

Ign, take note. Get a decent voice over guy like game trailers to do the audio on video reviews please.

And thanks for the link trop.

Only reason I like the GT reviews. They sound professional, unlike someone such a sGreg miller's fat ass spewing hyperbole everywhere

Gamepads feel so clumsy and horrible after adjusting to a mouse, don't know how I ever did it

Everything in the video review was on console except for the couple of seconds that explicitly stated "PC" in the upper right.

I don't think we will really know how well it works (or doesn't) until the game is in public hands. I really hope it leans more towards the reduced resources/need for specialization side of things, and not so much the "enemies have a billion hit points" approach.

A super hard mode can provide the best experience a game has to offer, or reduce it to a frustrating mess. Basically the difference between a FEAR or a Call of Duty.

Genuine question: how do you walk in PC FPS games? Aren't keyboards absolute?

I'm actually being genuine here. Console gamer all my life.

A controller has more momentum and allows a more pleasant viewing experience of environments.

I lot of games have a button you can hold or toggle for walk, like tab or Caps Lock. It's actually a pretty standard feature since Doom.

Theres usually a button to run/walk...

This is an argument console gamers like to use but honestly watch most people play games on consoles and they rarely use the speed between running and walking. Its not comfortable to hold the stick in that position for periods of time. So its a dumb argument..

Ugh. Really? See, for me, that's enough a reason to not play a game like this on PC. Think of all the times Booker will enter an amazing new locale and stare/gaze around in cinematic wonderment! Not on pc he won't, yo.

I think most people will gladly trade "gazing around in cinematic wonderment" for far greater aiming precision.
