Bioshock Infinite - Review Thread [UP: IGN exclusive split PC/Console review up]

I'm looking forward to renting this, being tremendously disappointed, and becoming further convinced that mainstream games journalists live in their own little world of moneyhats, purple prose, and superlative gushing over bad writing and braindead gameplay.

"THE STORY IS EPIC AND EDGY AND YOU CAN SHOOT A GUY WITH A GUN WHILE YOU SHOOT A GUY WITH MAGIC POWERS, 21/10 GOTYAY ALL YEARS"

Get some air.

Right now, we have some great reviews. Make up your on mind once you rent the game.

Sounds like you shouldn't really be reading a thread that's clearly titled as "Review Thread".

I am reading it, and I'm also rolling my eyes at how similar Infinite's critical reception is to that the first Bishock, a game which I really didn't care for at all in hindsight and which Infinite shows little promise of improving upon.

Reviews don't mean shit! Stop it guys, stop praising Bioshock Infinite for getting good scores it DOESNT MEAN SHIT!

(unless its for a game i like, then it's valid)

I hate how reviewers don't atleast mention the graphically difference between pc and console. Where was it mention that the PS3 was superior? I wasn't going to get this but a nice meaty single player would be nice right now, especially since I just beat Far Cry 3. But if the consoles are THAT behind the PC, I'll wait for a price drop.

Just because you don't like this type of game, doesn't mean the games industry is shit this time around.

Sure, the scores are extremely high and the scale is once again misused, but it does seem they know what the game excels at, and I believe them.

When you are already determined to disagree with the reviews, I wonder why even bother playing the game.

I care for the original bioshock greatly. What does this mean? Opinions. Loved the world, and the narrative, and the audio diaries. Game fucking sucked me in. Didnt want to leave.

Obviously there will be backlash toward everything, but I'm just doubting Infinite will be a Galaxy or Portal 2 and avoid major backlash.

I agree. Many people will be soured when they realize it's essentially just an even more dumbed down Bioshock in terms of gameplay with a very cool story wrapped around it.

going into ps4 fits.........

im no tech guy but i believe bluray plays a huge part on this, the fact that ps3 games dont have to be compressed like the ones on 360 the image quality would tend to be better, this was probably not a problem at the beginning of the generation but games nowadays seem to be more ambitious so in order to avoid multiple discs on the 360 maybe the compression degrades the IQ a little bit

THANK YOU BASED LEVINE!

Edit: lol Vire, great minds think alike ;)

To be perfectly honest, I loved those aspects of Bioshock as well, I just prioritize other things over them in making an overall assessment of the game.

When you are already determined to disagree with the reviews, I wonder why even bother playing the game.

I don't believe in calling anything a bad game if I haven't played it. My *expectations* are low, but I'm trying to make my cynicism scholarly and well-informed if nothing else.

Funny thing is (I touched on it earlier) that I thought the first 2 games were really overrated and am really excited for this. The setting looks good and the story sounds great. Game play looks good but I haven't played it yet but everything about this one seems so much better than the first 2 games.

Sigh, I was LTTP and didn't like Bioshock 1 at all. I'm pretty sure this is heavily hype driven too, based on teh prettys. But I ordered it anyway, don't seem to have much of a choice.

I'm honestly kind of surprised by these reviews. With everything that went on during development I didn't expect this to live up to the hype. I'm really glad it seems to be though because I have a ton of respect for Ken and the team. Excited to play it tomorrow.

On the off chance that anyone from Irrational reads this. Please make Ken do a new series of Irrational Interviews. Thanks.

Yes you do. I wouldn't buy any game based on hype.

And that is where opinions come into play. Those were the best aspects of the game and i didnt see them being the best aspects of the game as a flaw. Whats wrong if reviewers as whole feel the same way? Does that make them sell out? What about me? I dont get paid to play games and most of my faves are as gameplay driven as they come.

This is one of the dumbest things I've read. You didn't like Bioshock but you preordered this anyway because you dont have much of a choice? Why.

For anyone who's played it, is it really up there with the best games of the gen?
I've found it forgettable and in no way one of the best games of the gen. For your information, my favorite games of this generation are:

  • Deadly Premonition
  • The Walking Dead
  • Alpha Protocol
  • Dragon Age: Origins
  • Assassin's Creed 2
  • Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
  • Team Fortress 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
  • Mass Effect
  • Catherine
  • Red Dead Redemption
  • Saints Row 2
  • Saints Row 3
  • Civilization V
  • Portal 1
  • Burnout Paradise
  • Left 4 Dead
  • Left 4 Dead 2
  • Virtua Fighter 5

96 almost guarantees I'll hate it based on what other games have gotten that score or higher this gen (skyrim, ME2, GTA 4, Bioshock 1, uncharted 2). Arkham City is the only one I didn't completely hate out of the 96+ club this gen. I don't think I look for the same things the casual press does in games to say the least.

Looks like the GOTY came early this year. On media blackout so I won't watch or read any of the reviews.

I.cannot.wait.to.play.

I think you need a new hobby altogether.

You're a smart guy, I don't believe you don't realise this position is as idiotic to take as "IT'S GONNA BE AMAZING 10/10 EVERYONE LOVES IT HYPE OUT THE ASS"

Something something open minds.

A good time?

I appreciate Sessler's excitement for the game, but comparing the ending to Chinatown is completely absurd...

For anyone who's played it, is it really up there with the best games of the gen?

In my humble opinion, yes. Probably the finest 'AAA' game I have played this gen.

Here are some of my thoughts, repeated from the Infinite thread.

I posted this on the Halo community OT, there is a large amount of BS fans on there.

I might as well add it here, I've added some stuff after playing some more. Specifically the tears and two weapon limit.

So here are my initial thoughts on it, I'm not going to say anything about the story.

The game itself is an incredible sequel, Irrational do many things in infinite that really resonates with me.

The first thing is that they have created a world, contrasting with rapture but built up with interesting characters and ideologies. They've populated it with grandeur and mystery far beyond what I thought was possible this gen.

Certainly it costs them, there is a regular occurrence of stuttering, although I don't think as much as you would get if you installed the disk (I have it installed). But, there is an ability to unlock the framerate to provide a smoother experience at the expense of graphical fidelity.

Everything else is top notch, you can see and hear style ooze throughout every inch of the game, the music sublime, the menu is awesome, I could just leave it on there for a couple of minutes.

Now, in relation to the gameplay, this is Bioshock through and through, yet, more polished. The most common criticism of BS1 was that the gunplay was quite poor. I think they've done a marvellous job to bring that up to scratch, it now plays as good you would expect from a traditional shoot bang game. The sky hook is a very thrilling and novel way to travel, and in combat situations, the whole game when using the sky hook, plasmids and guns, it just clicks.

Then there are tears, and these really open up useful options during combat, I'll explain one battle, it was the battle before the gondola ride, the whole place is set up to exploit, as I'm waiting to fight the men who enter the area, I quickly dispose of two before accessing the skyline, at this moment I'm getting pegged. So I ask Elizabeth to 'tear' in some cover, as I land behind it, I lay a crow trap. The men who were pinging me with bullets, give chase on the skyline, my health is low, Elizabeth tosses me a health pack, I get back on the skyline and go to a rooftop which contains a sniper rifle tear, Elizabeth calls it in, I aim to where I layed the crow traps to see men stumbling and proceed to literally snipe their heads off. Just glorious amounts of possibility.

In relation to the two weapon limit this is perhaps the first game since Halo ODST (and before that Halo CE), where I have genuinely had to pause and consider which two weapons will benefit me before entering the next area.

Two tips, if you want to maximise the better FPS mechanics you should choose the second controller option, which put ADS on the left trigger and plasmids on the LB. The second tip is that you should start the game on the hard difficulty, it is pretty easy so far.

Irrational have also delved into issues such as racism and religion with great depth, this is evident from how game presents such issues, either graphically or through audio diaries. They have confronted those issues, whereas other devs would shy away from them.

And as a last word, to those on here who are big BS fans, what can I say? Well, remember seeing Rapture for the first time? Exploring its wonder and mystery and being satisfied by it all? Well, be prepared to have that feeling all over again.
