I didn't mean tying into Avengers 3 specifically - I mean tying into the MCU as a whole. It stands to reason that a MCU movie will find it's own way to tie into one of the upcoming hot titles, and to be fair, Ant-Man partially ties into Captain America: Civil War (getting recruited by Falcon and implied to be important in getting Bucky out of a conundrum) which is basically Avengers 2.5 from the looks of things.

I think after IM2 and AoU there is concern that some Marvel films are worse than others at standing on their own as a coherent story.
GotG ties into the greater MCU, but it doesn't leave half a dozen hanging threads that depend on future films, and it doesn't require much prior knowledge to get into the characters presented. Since it's Thanos' only speaking appearance, it actually serves as his introduction, rather than another worthless cameo.
