The fact that isn’t a huge box office draw will just cement it’s cult following. If anything you should be happy it’s not this mainstream superhero/sci fi blockbuster movie. I guarantee it makes it budget back in the long term.

The original has a strong cult-following and it’s DNA is in pretty much everything nowadays.

Shame this bombed, it’s my favorite film I’ve seen in years. I might actually prefer it to the original.

people don't like watching good films nowadays that's why it's doing poorly.

i don't expect it to do well sales-wise anyway. it's not that kinda film. as long as the quality is there, which it apparently is, that's good enough for me.

When did they appreciate them? The original wasn't a hit either. Why do people keep saying "today's audience" when the original was not a commercial success, not even a critical one, when it came out?

I think this opening weekend failure sits squarely on the marketing department. Then again this is a very hard movie to sell. If next weekend drops like 70% then it's on the movie. :p

With the success of stuff like Arrival, Ex Machina, The Martian...and yes, Interstellar, people might have thought that audiences were opening up to less action-y sci-fi

Most shows at my local theaters were sold out this weekend which is a bummer because I wanted to use my moviepass without sitting in the corner of the first row at an awkward show time. Next week I guess. I do live in a place where the demographics work in its favor.

Edge of Tomorrow, Fury Road, BR2049 are probably going to be my 'underappreciated' holy trinity now.

Deakins had better win his Oscar.

Those are movies that are, grounded, if that makes sense. Very human experiences without any weird side effects that most audiences can relate to. Blade Runner on the other hand feels alien compared to those.

This was always the expected scenario, but still sad to see. Finally going to see it next week, then again probably with my dad. Going in IMAX for first viewing, it's the only way.

IMAX isn't actually the preferred format here per Deakins, but you could do worse.

Nothing? Meaning? Pointless? What are you, watching a deposition or watching a movie? All these things build the mood and the world and circumstances for the characters.

Ex Machina has very similar themes. That said Ex Machina was a hit respective to its budget more than total numbers.

Not to mention that BR2049 was grounded, it's all about humanity and the concept of self.
Even the sci fi elements are mostly subdued. Flying cars, holgraphics and drones essentially.

They didnt know what it was so they weren't interested? How will you ever be interested in something if you don't give it a chance? Talk about being close minded. If I had written off stuff I didnt know about I would have missed out on some of the best movies and games Ive ever seen/played.

I pitched BR2049 to some friends as "detective thriller in a sci-fi backdrop". They saw the rottentomatoes score and were sold. One of them even called it his movie of the year.

I mean I agree. I'm GLAD we did get a big budget Blade Runner although I haven't had the chance to see it yet. It's just more of a "I hope the studio isn't surprised at all by this" type of ordeal

How much is down to marketing? I'll admit I've been pretty pumped to see this but I didn't even know it was out until yesterday night. Will see it sometime during the week for sure.

Unfortunately people are like that all the time. Go look at the gaming side. If something releases and people haven't been targeted by the hype machine and the advertising doesn't reach them, or it's an indie with no advertising, they brush it off as bad because they're clued in and if it's worth experiencing of course they'd know it.

I feel the same way, usually slow movies are my cup of tea. The Revenant wasn't very interesting though, I got through it by admiring DiCaprio and Hardy's acting, which were stellar. I actively dislike Birdman.

I’ve seen tons of marketing though in public spaces though but I guess the original is considered more of a geek thing?

I'm actually in awe this movie got produced at all. $150 million invested into an arthouse mood piece.

I can only assume this was a passion project of one of the distributor executives, because they have to know there was no way this was recuperating its budget.

Love Dredd. But I feel like that ship has sailed. Despite Karl Urban being free and it being a good idea, they can't come up with sequel (just rumors of a TV show). I'm also not sure how well what is basically a cop that's judge, jury, and executioner would go over right now. I'm still glad it exists.

It's a movie for people who use their brains for bigger questions than "should I watch reaction videos or prank videos?"

BR goes about the concept of humanity and self in a non-conventional way. It's got a lot of complex things that can easily go over people. It's not directly telling you anything. You gotta keep thinking about this movie long after it's done to fully grasp it.

It's sad, because this isn't a particularly great Blade Runner sequel, but it is one of the most striking and careful science fiction movies you'll see in a given year. I resent that it exists, but it deserves a far bigger audience for what it is.

I also would like to see Dune get another crack at the big screen. Villenueve has proven that he can handle hard SF on a cinematic scale, and while I love the Lynch version of Dune for how eccentric it is, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing a more hard SF treatment of it.

Also, I always like to see how different art teams tackle the look of a sand worm.
