Blade & Soul Beta Thread: East Finally Meets West

If there's one gripe I have with the character creator, its the lack of a muscle slider. Sure I can make my girl's arms and legs thicker, but I would love to add definition to them, not to mention give her a killer 6 pack. Muscle slider when NCSoft?!

That'd be cool.

This game really shows why Im not good in fighting games. I love everything about the Monk style class with the fists but I suck at quick reactions and block timing. I should be a massive tank blocking all attacks or backing out in a quick dash to the back or the side, but my instincts come a second later than when the move must happen....

I hope I get good by the time full release comes otherwise I will have to play an easier class... Loving the outfits and the battle system, hating the 1 copper for anything sold to vendors, the lack of explanation with enhancement, evolution and importance of dropped equipment that I've had to figure out by trial and error.

I also dont like that the smallest breast size is still a D cup on human-like races and that the midgets get robe like outfits for almost all gear that I've seen so far.

super fun KFM combo: Tab (jump), 1 (block), F (stun punch counter), RMB (dashing punch), LMB (punch once/twice), RMB.

The last RMB launches the enemy in the air and you can follow it up with an air combo (LMB), but finishing an enemy off with the air punch and having their item fly out of them is /so/ satisfying.

And a bonus tip I recently realized: Those annoying blocking swordsmen? You can instantly grapple to the floor with Tab. :) (or right click to stun them..)

I really had my heart set on playing a Lyn but I can't imagine any other class being as fun with how visceral this one is...but what is /with/ the design of the KFM Master Pack weapon? It's awful! Like a slab of blue play-doh with spikes on it.

Don't get discouraged, the Kung-Fu Master is the hardest class to play and it's definitely a learning process on how they function when it comes to timing counters, dodges, backdashes, etc appropriately. Take your time and take it slow. :)

EDIT: Just saw on the Blade & Soul website that it's Kung-Fu Master Week. AWWWWWWWW YEAH!

Is premium the only way to turn these venture tokens I got into hongmoon coins? I'm not seeing any other way to obtain dragonstone.

I made it to level... 12? on my Blade Master. I can't say I understand everything about the combat system in the game and I feel the game doesn't do enough to teach you some things at the start, plus the UI really gets in the way, but the game is fun, more than I was expecting and the beta is pretty stable for what I experienced.

You can customize pretty much the entire UI by pressing Shift + F1. The Game tab in settings will let you mess with some stuff also.

I've seen other people mention that here (as well as on other sites) as well. To help out with that I made sections in the main OT giving a better explanation of soul shields, hongmoon weapons and how to level/breakthrough/evolve them, among other things.

Ok time for my reflections on the beta. It was very illuminating and it has so much feed back that I can feed into the devs over the next few weeks. The art ,combat music ,optimization localiziation, controller settings, ect. So much to go over and talk about.

The code seems fairly stable but I and few others had issues with the game just freezing at loading times that plagued me until later today where I had the game running as close to perfect as I can hope for in this beta. I hope that loading slow issue is taken care of and the memory leak is dealt with in due time as well because with that taken care of the only real thing left to polish is localization and controller settings and perhaps a bit of the quest flow and exp curves.

Naturally the first thing I wanted to test for is how they managed the pad support and to compare how they progressed to how Tera had progressed with it's pad set up. It had worked much better than I thought it would have given the short time they had to work on it which gives me faith. They had it to pretty much where tera's launch in Korea had pad support and with some work it could easily catch up in that regard.

The first thing I would have them look up is how they could have combos chain up in macros where you just hit a desginated button in the chain for smooth casting like how in tera for example a sorcerer would cast celerity which with a button could que fireblast and ect. Also have it how the skills that can chain work on what attack you have. For example force masters kind of have it half way where if you crit you can do barrage, but I would like other things to have that to better help with switching attacks and combos. Also a bit more customization and a pad skill layout like tera has.

Dungeons I could not get a good shake at due to not having a group to really tackle them as well as the loading issues I had run into.

Now those are enough of my concerns and control suggestions, I LOVE the art and character creation suite. The options take some getting used to but when you get down to the nitty gritty you can make some great looking characters. My Assassin and Force Master are very beautiful and expressive. I love how the emotes bring out the tone of the game and your characters and race.

How the combat works is really good, I think it's not quite where tera is with it's combat but with the richness and the pace, still one of the best battle systems in a MMO. It's really the combat and the art and theme which has me into this game, I have fallen out of love with MMOs but the combat and the non traditional structure has really drawn me to this game.

Even though Im not good at it, I love that this game requires combo execution with short timing windows and doesnt have built in macros. For example, I learned last night that assasins have a .2 second window to time on of their skills to dodge an attack in order to get the hide property of it. Unfortunately people will make their macros happen even if the game didnt want to support it, and will turn all the execution difficulty into something as trivial as a rotation of skills like WoW. In this particular game I would be happy if macro programs were discouraged and blocked based on the combat system.

For those using the mumble server, a custom DNS name has been added for easy remembering and sharing with other GAF members.

Quote to see the new address below....the old one should still work as its just the direct IP

So gaf, what is the class breakdown on what people ar eplaying? I'm a Force Master Main with an assassin which beat out swordmaster for me rather shockingly. However I may sway back depending on how controls shake out and my slow loading and crashes are dealt with.

I have tried almost everything. I liked only Destroyer and Blade Dance.

At first I thought that destroyers are too slow but after playing with for a while I started to like him. Its so nice to crush mobs.

Blade Dance is a moe swordsman. Fast and fun gameplay.

Assassin and Blade Master are so boring. I have dropped them at lvl 10 couldn't bare them any more.

I'm waiting for EU servers to try KFM.

Another issue one could leverage with the game is how some classes just come off early. Blade master and assassin and force master really blossom at later levels leaving them kinda meh. I love seeing more destroyers in this meta.

I believe this. The last night of the beta I came across a bunch of lvl 30+ players in Foshi Pyres just taking turns fighting one another. A lvl37 assassin showed up and just destroyed all of them with the most ridiculous combos. I'm definitely looking forward to later level assassin play now.

Planning to be a KFM specialist. The other classes look fun as hell to play but the KFM just feels so right for me. The only other class I would possibly consider trying out is the recently revealed 9th class they showed off in Korea that looks to be a hybrid of the KFM and Force Master. :lol

Blade Master for me. I love the Lyn too much and their fast, combo-based swordplay is excellent. I'm still a bit of a headstrong fighter, which clashes with the Blade Dancers' low defense, but hey, getting used to it.

I'm not the player that's likely to make any alts (as I like to focus on just one character). Though if I did, it'd be the Warlock no question, as they have elements from the badass original Summoner class.

You don't say. :p

If I had to pick one class for "fast", I'd probably say KFM, since you're basically always animation cancelling, both in pve and pvp(well pvp you do once you get a CC off but still). You have a ton of movement skills too so you're never running around much. BM and LBM are pretty fast too though especially once you get enough tools to start switching stances constantly.

That said, other than summoner I'd say every class is pretty fast, even Destroyers.

Which one, are you talking about the Blade Dancer?
The class they revealed in Korea. It should have lots of animation cancelling things to run with.

Any animation cnacleing classes would be counted as fast. With Assassin and KFM being top. Which is justified because when you get them rolling holy shit...

Played Assassin to 44 over alpha / beta. Then started KFM and FM. KFM seemed fun, but I'm not sure I'm a combo expert like that, so I don't think I'll be going with it. And FM seemed slow. BM doesn't look that much more fun, so I think I'm sticking with Assassin, though I'll continue to give KFM/FM a chance in future weekends.

Do you guys think we'll get warlock at launch?

Also, I thought the next beta was this weekend, so I'm sad now :(

They have stated numerous times that we will not. Warlock, Mushin's Tower, Pirate Bay etc are all going to be 2-3+ months after launch most likely

I played force master and had a ton of fun. From what little I've seen I would guess it's a relatively simple class. The game also seemed fairly easy as well, even the bosses, but I only got to level 20 so assume it gets much more difficult later on.

Level 1-20 content including the dungeon Blackram Narrows is super easy, which gives players the time to familiarize themselves with the class they're playing. The second dungeon (forgot its name) is around level 37 and that place is a wake up call for players who thought they'd be able to faceroll through like the previous one. :lol

Also for those that either have the Initiate or Discple Founder's Pack, they now made it possible to upgrade to Masters! Go here to upgrade!

I'm not seeing a way to upgrade a Founders pack (though this may be due having a Masters already). Their FAQ still says you cannot.

Edit: Yep, it works. Heard from multiple people that once they logged into their account, the option to upgrade their Founders pack was available.

Recently got an email saying that you could now. If you already have a Master's then it might not show, but nonetheless like you mentioned they do need to update their FAQ to avoid confusion.

Oh definitely. Here's hoping they release some gameplay videos of the class by the end of this year.

Just a heads up, there's going to be a livestream at 2:45 AM tomorrow broadcasting the 2015 World Championship. I would definitely recommend checking it out to see some intense high level play from some of the best players in the world.

You can watch it on their Blade & Soul Twitch channel.
