My strategy :
This worked best for me both in the main game and the chalice dungeon fight. Using either Tonitrus or my whip can with bolt paper, I start out by killing the 1st wave of little spiders. This is the only batch of minions I clear out because in this first stage clearing them allows you the time and space to get in some heavy charged attacks without Rom aggro'ing on you. I can get in 2 or 3 R2 hits and then when he starts to teleport I try to get in a few quick hits. Once he teleports and starts with the magic attacks I disregard the minions and just run towards him, dodging towards/away depending on his attacks. Once I have an opening I dodge to his side and get in as many swings as I can before he teleports. Repeat.

This was my strategy as well, although I cleared some of the spiders that were off on their own in the second phase. Stay relatively close to him and you shouldn't have to deal with the meteor attack too often

Oh my god at the P

D
escendant
in Pthumeru Ihyll.
He's behind a pillar, he throws his blades at me, THE BLADES FUCKING GO THROUGH THE DAMN PILLAR LIKE BUTTER AND KILL ME, WHAT THE SHIT, GAME!?

Just beat that bastard, he wasn't that hard but COME ON! That death was so UNFAIR.

Ugh, I'm taking a break D:

Yeah, that was really pissing me off on that fight. Most bosses were pretty fair with that kind of thing, but that one wasn't. >.>

At what level did you beat the game?

I felt the latter bosses of the game were easier for me, maybe I was over leveled (around 85)?

most of us normal humans can only parry him 2-3 times. This was with my Evelyn +8. What gun you use? Is Evelyn no good for parries?

Blunderbuss +9. Didn't use anything other than this pistol throughout the game. Though I heard it is a bit easier to parry with this.

I'm so used to the Hunter's Axe and its attack patterns that I'm really having problems using other weapons. I've leveled up a few other weapons to the same level but for me they just fall short (as in they are literally too short sometimes). It's probably just a matter of forcing myself to learn Ludwig's Blade etc., but for some reason I always keep coming back to the axe.

Same. I tried the Kirkhammer, Saw Blade and now using Ludwig's, but it doesn't feel the same. I'll try Ludwig's blade again, but it doesn't feel as "godly" as some people say it is. Then again, there is no "best" weapon, no?

Axe is awesome for crowd control and dealing one-off swipes that do tons of damage.

My main problem now is parrying. I rarely -- if ever -- use it. For bosses, I don't even attempt it since when I did, I usually get damaged. My method of poking and running seems to work fine with the four bosses I've downed so far.

Just listening to the whole OST of Bloodborne whilst I'm revising and it is by far the best of any Souls game so far. The atmosphere it creates is amazing. Not what I want though as I'm retiring Bloodborne until after my exams!

Is the M
oon Presence's theme somewhere else in the game? I feel like I've heard it before - possibly in trailers or something

EDIT: Just realised, it's very similar to the Hunter's dream theme

Depends if he's glitched or not. His behaviour is far, far less aggressive when he's in "easy" mode. He shoots less, closes range less often, and uses a smaller range of strikes/combo's.

Its not one of the bosses really obviously nerfed by keeping the game in rest mode for prolonged periods, but his behaviour is distinctly different.

Turn on camera auto-adjust. For whatever reason there are times when going through a fog wall where the game doesn't know how ot follow your character and that somehow drops the framerate to nothing. Turning on camera auto-adjust fixes that.

Oh wow, that might just be it, I forgot to turn it back on because I didn't see the difference.

BTW this is what happened, I managed to record it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt6GgakUoMo
Very mild spoiler for a location late in the game.

I never use rest mode and never had the game on for more than 3 hours. Can't be the memory leak glitch. He was really agressive and almost killed me a few times when the parry didn't work.

That
Hunter
you face in the Grand Cathedral after you beat
ROM
was a right little encounter. 2nd attempt, but its was REALLY intense. Felt good 8)

The two starter weapons are the best at parrying imo. The Blunderbuss has slightly more effective parrying up close, but the Hunter Pistol has more range.

Pistol has a quicker animation I've heard, though it doesn't have the same spread. So on some of bosses which are fast I could see it being better. Timing on a blunderbuss was really tedious on some of the fights for me.

I've finally beat the game last weekend and
got the true ending.
First thing I notice when I got to the NG+ was that enemies especially the
Cleric Beast
can take a lot.

You got skills then :D

After doing NG/NG+ legit I've been experimenting to see how the AI changes due to the bug and what it appears to do is to lock the behaviour from switching out of certain modes once the enemy enters it.

Its quite interesting actually. Only a couple of bosses are decisively crippled, whereas some actually can offer an interesting alternative challenge due to the way they work in their "broken" state.

So Arcane stat scaling ONLY works with an Arcane gem placed in a weapon, correct? Otherwise useless, aside from discovery

So Arcane stat scaling ONLY works with an Arcane gem placed in a weapon, correct? Otherwise useless, aside from discovery

It scales all elemental effects. Fire, bolt, and arcane.

So, molotovs, hunters torch, flamesprayer, rosmarinus, tonitrus and then any weapon with a fire, bolt or arcane gem in it.

The Hunter Pistol is also much quicker than the Blunderbuss. The Blunderbuss however is much better when fighting "humans/hunters" due to is spread.

Any tips for Rom? Most tips I see basically say USE TONITRUS. I'm out of shards tho :(.

I have to second all the hit-and-run and ignoring the little ones comments here. This bastard stone walled me my first 10+ tries depleting my vials and mental state alike when trying to clear out everything first. I ended up just faking out the minions by sprinting around and taking sharp turns into fatty's body, hit twice or so, then roll away asap to recharge stamina. Fake minions out again and repeat. I stayed as close as possible to avoid that obnoxious hailstorm move (I believe staying close avoids this?). Also, I used Blades Of Mercy.

Got some good time in this weekend... found my way into the F
orbidden
W
oods
for the first time, found lots of runes and killed S
hadow of
Y
harnam
on the 1st try, thanks to the big tree and being quick with my dodges.

Then I wandered into the
moon lake
area and beat both the
hunter
and then R
om
in two tries by completely ignoring the
spiders
it spawns (I used
Ludwig's
blade). And shit just keeps getting weirder...I'm enjoying my sessions so much. This is my GOTY until further notice.

i will 3rd the "ignore the
spiders
" i also found that
rom is weaker defensively to stabing than blunt or sweeping attacks. i used ludwig's and ran by the spiders, R2, charge R2 if possible, dodge outta there, and repeat

Regular version Rom just dance around while killing the spiders. After a few circles around Rom the spiders will be broken up and you can clear them one by one. DO NOT USE LOCK ON. Just circle and kill spiders while keeping an eye on Rom to see what he does. The normal progression version of him is piss easy, the chalice version is more difficult because the spiders wander all over for some reason--makes sense to go for him more than the spiders then.

Edit: I don't know why you all bother with spoilers. Everybody sucks so badly at using them that they're a waste anyway.

Finished the game yesterday and got the platinum trophy.

I really love Bloodborne. Despite using the Souls framework it still feels unique to me because of the setting and the changes in combat.

You can still see that they use their old engine for this and that the old Dark Souls 2 lighting system is now at work here, and there are a lot of reused assets and rough edges, but man there are certain moments where the game looks mindblowing. The whole art design is impressive, maybe even more than any previous Souls games since instead of using usual dark fantasy tropes they had to think about a lot of new stuff and add crazy cool shit like weapons that can transform into different weapons. There are not many games where I decide to slowly walk through the world instead of running through it; so many details and hints to absorb. Absolutely fantastic.

But still.. after playing dozens of hours, I must say that Bloodborne has some weaknesses that are rather disappointing. Speaking of the world, I really dislike the way NPCs were included in this game. You talk to windows and doors instead to persons that you can attack or talk into following you to your base. And even then, most people you are meeting are just civilians that have little to no purpose. Demon's Souls still does this the best, you meet people in the world and they join you and your base grows with more and more people. Every NPC there has a purpose and it's fun to see them all after beating a difficult boss and talking to them.
Chalice dungeons turned out to be more boring than I expected. At some point I just gave no shits anymore and ran through every dungeon, opened the boss door's and spent hours trying to kill those. Some of the ideas in the chalice dungeons are cool and sometimes you get Diablo vibes from it, and I also appreciate the fact that almost every enemy you encounter there was made specifically for the dungeons, but at some point - like every roguelike before it - it becomes dull.

The biggest issues have been the mechanical changes; I have no idea why I have to use a hunter's badge or return to the hunter's dream to reset the enemies when this has already been solved in both Dark Souls games. Why do I need to farm blood phials and bullets like in Demon's Souls instead of using the superior solution found in Dark Souls? These problems seem minor but because of the time it takes to solve both they are really annoying.

Other than that.. amazing game and the definite killer app for the PS4 that justifies a console purchase. Probably even the first game that made me appreciate my PS4.

I wouldn't put it above Dark Souls, but probably on the same level as DeS and way above Dark Souls 2. This is a game that I hope will receive some additional DLC since the combat is crazy fun.

A couple things -- I sort of agree with the npcs? But you do have some just hanging out (like
Arthur and Eileen
and then others you talk to behind closed doors - including some quests and ones you can bring back to a mini-hub. It's not the Nexus, agreed, but it is there, and the story itself sort of dictates everyone being boarded up.

As for 'resetting' the monsters, you CAN do this without going back to the Dream. Just use a bold hunters mark -- they're only like 1200 echoes iirc, which is dirt cheap (and the game gives you like 15+). It brings you back to the lantern and resets everything but lets you keep your souls.

As for 'farming' blood vials, there is only one time in the game i had to even think about doing this. obviously people having more trouble might need to do it more, but it was nice having 20 in hand at any given time.

Chalice doesn't bother me at all, either. i wonder if people are taking special issue with it because it's done 'after' the game, when you're already mentally/emotionally done with the game?

Wait wasn't he the one person who thought that demons souls was Shit? And didn't want to publish it outside of Japan in the first place? This is actually a great turn around.

He played an early build of Demon's when it was super janky and disliked it and didn't think anyone would like it. He played a later build and fell in love with it, but it's why Sony didn't publish DS in the US.

The awesome part of Ludwigs is its 2h R2 attack, both normal and charged. Its a very long thrust that does great damage. I use it on aggressive enemies that melee most of the time or cheesing people on the other side of doorways. Its great for taking out NPC hunters that keep walking at you, but don't roll or shoot.

That said, I haven't touched used it since I got the burial blade to +10. Its an amazing weapon.

I parried his geriatric ass to death too. Somewhere around 8 times maybe? I didn't count, but most of the damage I did to him was with parries. The dbag
after gherman
I didn't parry at all, at lest I don't think. That dude got beat down with the axe, then took a few canon shots to the face to finish him off.

I made a second character using Blades of Mercy, and i find it far superior to Ludwigs. The running R2 spin move is great for crowd control as it can hit 4-5 enemies at a time. Human sized bosses are also far easier as i can just stun-lock them, something i could never do with Ludwigs, as its a bit too slow for my liking.

The blades also made Rom incredibly easy, as the spinning R2 attack would take out 1-2 spiders everytime i attacked him. Making the amount of spiders less of a nuisance as the fight went on.

This exactly. She was the hardest boss for me the first go-around, but in the chalice dungeon and NG+, it was a piece of cake R2-ing with Ludwig's and bolt.

Just finished it for the first time.
Gehrman
and
Moon Presence
were both insanely cool boss fights. A little disappointed with the ending itself, but hey, it's a Souls game, it's not like I was gonna get anything anyway.

I found Blades Of Mercy really hard to get into at first but once it clicked the speed was so goddamn satisfying. I just realized yesterday that you go into a little frenzy (bad pun) after several connecting hits of spamming dual-wield R1 and start slashing even more furiously...cool as hell.
