Just completed the game, all without help of guides or anything. WHAT A RIDE!

The horrifying feeling of venturing into the unknown is just unprecedented. The insane adrenaline and rapid heart beat when tackling a new boss doesn't happen in ANY other game. I am flored.

Would play a million times/10.

Completed with the great sword and 40 strength, now I want to use the scythe, but I only have 12 skill. Continue NG+ with strength weapons, or start a skill based build? D:

Can you stun the
cleric beast
more than once?

yeah, basically an act of hacking away the flesh off his limbs. Especially his furry arm which he will regenerate once it has been hacked to the bone. When you hack it down, he will get stunned and give you the chance at a big strike.

2. Buy the Hunter gear
The game is really hard if you use your basic gear. Fortunately, you can buy a 4-piece armor set at the vendor in Hunter's dream for about 2500 blood echoes in total. And yeah, that armor set is pretty much a game changer for the beginning section of Bloodborne. You can do this even before the first boss. If you have issues getting 2500 blood echoes though

Excellent post! However I will add that you can fiind the HUnters set early in the game prior to Cleric...obvious route spoilers but gettting it free is better than purchasing!!!

Hey guys how does the save system work. It's been so long since I played a souls game. Is it when you go back to the Nexus thingy?

I understand where you're coming from.

From what I've played so far, so game really overpushes aggressive style over cautious defensive styles, and I immediately thought that quite a lot of Souls games fans would not like it so much.

After beating 2 bosses(and dying to the third) I can say that I haven't found any worthwhile shields, or alternatives to an aggressive play style yet. Though I'm at the begninning so I can't know for sure.

You just have to get used to it I guess. I'm personally liking it so far, but if you really prefer to play in a slow and defensive manner, then yeah the game can disappoint you a bit.

There is a defensive playstyle actually, that is dodging, and parrying at the right time for riposte. One gameplay style that killed in Bloodborne is not defensive, but rather passive play style.

Ah, and that happens at specific hp levels?

Happened moment after your riposte. 15-25 seconds I think, you should know when it happened though.

Guys seriously, can't stress enough how important it is to backtrack to completed areas, all of them.

Not only will you miss out on armor, weapons, sidequests and items if you don't, you will miss out on a lot of great lore.

Hi, it's me again, you know, the guy waiting till Friday while still feeling he might not be able to get into Bloodborne despite / because of being a big Souls fan.

To reiterate my previous question: Is there anybody here who has played the game that feels like Bloodborne could be a severe step back from the Souls games in terms of character builds and combat strategy and variety? I.e. that it could be a better action game but a lesser RPG than the Souls games because of less options for roleplaying?

To clarify where I'm coming from with this: even after seeing some footage, I can't shake the feeling that this game is going too far in forcing the player to be daring and dex/str focused in combat by simply taking away shields and any sort of long ranged magic attacks. If true, this makes me wonder why so few people seem disappointed with this. Any action RPG should allow players to find their own strategies, and not force them to play as similar builds that centre around dodging hits and doing quick melee strikes, no? What, in other words, is the justification for not allowing us to play as some form of mage / pyro / cleric variety (apart from this technically not being a Souls game)? Why take something away that felt liberating in the previous games?

The more of these games come out, the less I'm sure I liked them because of the same reasons as most other players. For me, I never cared about the social interaction, PvP or about the high challenge taken on its own; I liked playing on my own while controlling a character with abilities that I felt enabled me to deal with most situations if I was smart about it. I liked the challenge and oppressive atmosphere because they forced / stimulated me to find creative strategies for each situation and to play defensively and carefully overall.

So far, Bloodborne seems to have gone out of its way to make such a (cowardly?) playing style impossible and I'm really not looking forward to having to try bosses again and again because the only way to beat them is to "get gud" in terms of getting in their faces and dodging their attacks. That might be how some have always played the Souls games as well, but not me and I'm starting to feel as if I'm getting out of tune with Miazaki's design philosophy.

You should play it before making assumptions imo. I also thought that Bloodborne will be less rpg than the Souls series, but so far it's very complex. The game does not throw you a buttload of weapons, but what it does is give the player freedom on how to augment said weapons. I've killed 3 bosses and have yet to change my starting weapon and I feel as though I've yet to master that weapon and unleash it's full potential.

Sure the game forces you to play melee, however, the combat is much deeper than ever. The timings, the dodging, everything is superflous. Gone is the gameplay where you use 3 spells and everything is dead. You have to work for it and it feels satisfying when everything in combat is clicking.

Without any spoilers are there hints on which areas you should back track to?

Another thing form the video; the number of moves from one weapon is also staggering. You can charge strong attacks, back step with light or strong attacks, roll with strong and light attacks, do transforming attacks mid roll and backstep, light attacks can be comboed up to 4 attacks and each trick weapon has 2 movesets meaning all of this x2.....its overwhelming.

Yeah this is an amazing trade off for the lower number of weapons

One thing I have noticed with bloodborne as opposed to ds is its more of a fun house of sorts The enemies won't chase you very far they seem to be just in thier areas.

You can literally run all the way to the first boss without fighting anyone.

Really? Like mid level, kill a minor enemy 'anything'?

Anything, really. Climb a ladder, press start, change equipment, look at an item, even so much as sneezing on a fly will save for you.

Are the chalice bosses randomized at all? I'm on my first one and he's called
Undead Giant

Hrm. Was watching a video of BB, and for their chalice dungeon that same guy was their boss. Interesting.

Steelbook just arrived, can't wait to install+update it and wait until Friday to finally start the game (probably offline).
Hope I manage to hold myself off until then, Driveclub Lambos should be helping.

Guys (and girls) stahp! I'm sitting here at work and have to write a big report till next week but all i'm doing is refreshing this threat and thinking about BB. Thinking about how i'm going to spank Father G later after he whipped me three times so far. Then i'm going to finally see the cleric beast for the first time :P

I couldn't wait until Friday so I bought $60 of PSN vouchers and got the digital version from the US store.

I think I'm going to cancel my preorder and use my £50 worth of Game credit (traded in a bunch of games in preparation for Bloodborne) to get PSN cash to play it the second it unlocks over here. Screw waiting an extra night to play it.

So... just found the formless Oedon rune and Festival messenger skin inside the Cathedral ward building, (rode up the elevator and jumped off midway up) the small door opened up at some point (Maybe 10 insight?)

Point is game still won't let me use runes... anyone know how to use them, or when I can use them?

Without any spoilers are there hints on which areas you should back track to?

For starters, save aside 10,000 echoes. After you beat the second boss, there will be a special item there that you will need to unlock something later.

In addition, if you met "You Know Who" in the sewers, go back to the Tomb where you fought the second boss after you beat the third boss. There is a very good sidequest chain that starts here.

In addition, generally just going back through the city districts, talking to NPCs at windows as much as possible is advised.

Oh,and KEEP INSIGHT AND ITEM DISCOVERY AS HIGH AS POSSIBLE These stats effect certain side-events and passageways and secrets.

GAF, if I wasn't a big fan of the Souls games, is there any reason to think that I would enjoy this more? Doing my best to not succumb to the hype, but I'm wavering.

After a certain boss. You get the missing tool in Hunter's Dream.

You need the rune tool and use it in Hunter's Dream, afaik you get it where the witch is, I've only read that though, I need the tool myself.

Does the rule of -/+ 10 levels apply for assisting others via resonant bell apply here? Because I'm at the bridge willing to assist anyone with the first boss, but I'm likely a bit high to.

ALRIGHT CANE LOVERS AND USERS

here it is

I don't think anyone who's at the first boss has the bell yet

Why didn't you like DS? Because there may be somethings that have changed enough or not depending on your answer.

Father g is whooping my fucking ass.

I'd take 2 cleric beasts over that ass hole any day.

Thanks for the save game advice. It's weird. I put 100 odd hours into Demons Souls and didn't recall it saving that way.

Anyway. Just explored the first level, slayed a good few people. Having great fun so far. Have to work now, this game will be on my mind all day no doubt

Also. The cane is good? I SO nearly chose that over the cleaver dammit!

You gain 1 insight if you've been defeated by the boss or have explored enough to get your hands on some madman's knowledge. Either way going back with 1 insight gives you access to the beckoning bell, but you're right maybe I'll camp out by the 2nd boss instead.

So I played for about 4 hours last night.

Some history, I played DS when it came out, probably got about a 3rd of the way in before quitting from frustration. Played Dark Souls but never got far and found it cumbersome. But this game.....this game is great in m eyes, I am in love. So much in love that I repeated the same area multiple times till I finally killed a ogre, then I finally killed some beasts. It felt rewarding, like I beat a game in it's own....then I got face punched by the Cleric in a few seconds. All the while with a smile on my face.

I might suck at this game right now, but I am getting better. I was so paranoid of fighting even a lowly human wandering around at first, now I walk over their corpses while I wipe the blood off my cleaver. Hopefully, with any luck I will feel the same way with the Cleric, after I die many times learning his little strategy.

Damn I am glad I bought this game.
