I understand where you're coming from.
From what I've played so far, so game really overpushes aggressive style over cautious defensive styles, and I immediately thought that quite a lot of Souls games fans would not like it so much.
After beating 2 bosses(and dying to the third) I can say that I haven't found any worthwhile shields, or alternatives to an aggressive play style yet. Though I'm at the begninning so I can't know for sure.
You just have to get used to it I guess. I'm personally liking it so far, but if you really prefer to play in a slow and defensive manner, then yeah the game can disappoint you a bit.
Thanks for the reply. Do you feel the weapon variety is sufficient to enable strategic variety at least with regards to the more aggressive melee combat, or are most of them similar in speed and overall feeling?
Visually/aesthetically I have to say that most of the weapons I've seen so far (in footage) seem too crude looking for my taste, especially compared to some of the more graceful options in the Souls games (rapiers, daggers, long swords, katana, spears, etc.). This might again be my weird taste, but I never cared for the bigger two-handed "over-the-top" weapons in the Souls games, nor any of the cleaver-type or blunt weapons, which is another reason why I fear that Bloodborne's combat won't really connect with me (in terms of roleplaying mostly).
Though weapon wise,
having access to a (transforming) katana or a DSII style two-handed twinblade that breaks apart into two daggers/small swords
Glad you're enjoying it though - that does ease my mind.
