Oblivion Remastered |OT| Kvatching up with an old hero

I have now completed the Dark Brotherhood and Thieves Guild quest lines and am cleaning up my side quest list before starting up the Arena quest line. I have not touched the main story and probably will not until we get a major patch. If by next week we don't have one, I'll just go back to closing Oblivion gates.

Not having a major patch this week would be a serious let down. The stutter and memory issues are frustrating as heck.

Is your security skill still improving if you're using it?
Just get your security skill to 100, it shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes.

I had low expectations of this fir two reasons.

1. UE5
2. Virtuous

The best I can say is that it wasn't worse than I expected.

It was exactly what I expected.

Stopped playing this on my PS5 Pro due to the performance and stuttering issues, which are inexcusable in my opinion in a remastered game that was announced and then shadow dropped the same day (and clearly NOT finished!).

Enjoying it more on PC but only because there are lots of Nexus Mods for it now that address some of the issues, plus on my system the game runs better and looks better, especially with hardware RT, than it does on my PS5 Pro. The open world stutters are still there, of course, as is the hilariously bad sprinting animation and the bizarre animation glitch that happens when mounting/dismounting the horse. I can accept that the original was janky but I never expected the remaster to actually be jankier...

Shame on you, Bethesda, for thinking this was in an acceptable state to release! Why didn't you just announce the game on 22nd April with a July/August release date and then continue to work on polishing it and fixing the stuttering? No-one was asking for this game because it officially never existed until you announced it so having to wait 2 or 3 months after the announcement would not have upset anyone.

I dare someone to ask Todd Howard why the game was not optimised for PC... and consoles!

What am I doing wrong - 33 hours in the game (apparently) and only level 7. Is that to be expected?

(I want that skeleton key)

Yeah if you don't do stuff to deliberately level up it goes slow and honestly you are better off not levelling in this game as the enemy scaling gets stupid.

As for the skeleton key it's nice as a time saver using the auto function but you don't really need it. If you follow the video guide up thread you can pick any lock from level 1 without breaking any picks. Essentially what you do is hold for the pick to go up and if the pin drops any distance at all you let it go down and try again until it is almost sticking at the top then click to lock it in place as the pick is on the way up. Just repeat that for all pins.

The level scaling in the remastered isn't nearly as bad as the OG. They reduced enemies' hp by 2/3 it seems like at later levels. I can one-shot almost everything with a sneak dagger. That's less than 200 hp of damage. OG, they would've had at least 2/3 hp left. They also nerfed damage a little as well.

Edit: that's at lv 33.

Sure but level 100 stealth attacks ignore armour and stealth breaks the game anyway as the AI enemy doesn't even notice when you kill someone they are talking to.

For standard combat when you get to level 30 the scaling is silly.

That was without master sneak at the time. I did master it at 34, so I can probably one-shot everything now. The hp are a 1/3 now. So it still scales, but not nearly as bad as OG, like I said above. Pretty sure most of it stops scaling completely after 25 as well. The bandits in light and no armor were one-shoted, and heavy armor wearers had 1/5 or so left. Was the exact same at 33 as it was 25. The only one that wasn't was the arena.

For reference in the OG, killing one that level took 3-4 sneak attacks with umbra. Nonsneaking was brutal as hell.

Yes, if you play completely normal you will not level up fast....but thats not a bad thing, as others have pointed out already. I was rising in levels like hell, because I wanted to level up my magic schools and was spamming spells like there is no tomorrow. Than I went to Kvatch at lvl15...and oh boy...that was something different. :messenger_grinning_sweat:

Oh its not as bad as the original for sure and the actual levelling was stupid in that one too. I had no probs with my stealth run but playing as a spell sword on a second play through and using mostly sword past level 30 as all the magic is maxed... well I noticed a big jump. Suddenly it was talking 2 times the hits to kill shit. I even checked to see if the difficulty setting had somehow gone up lol.

Ya, it's much better now. Still can be hairy as fuck if you're not building your character up right tho.

It's such a nice change compared to the original where you would actually avoid leveling past a certain point.

It also helps with the last parts of the main quest which could be really rough with the old level scaling system.

I wish they improved the AI a bit more though, it's the only part that really shows the age of the original.

The AI in the remaster is somewhat broken in regards to stealth attacks right?

I just booted up the original on my SX and NPC's do actually notice when you attack people standing next to them with stealth attacks and come attack you as a group, whereas in the remaster only the person you attack goes aggro and hunts you down.

Yup and it makes the stealth gameplay boring. A lot of the fun with skyrim bow stealth was repositioning to avoid detection. In this you just kill em all and none of em even notice.

My goal to do every single dungeon and quest in the game is gonna bite me in the ass, ain't it? I'm at 67 hours now and the crashes are getting completely out of control. If it gets even worse I'll have to quit the game…

What's interesting is that for me it seems only to crash in dungeons. Open World itself is running just fine.
