[Bloomberg] Xbox Talking to Partners for Mobile Store, CEO Spencer Says

They already had stores in the past. How did that go?
You don’t understand, now it will be completely different.

I might be dumb, but it looks like Phil is very keen to launch many different “initiatives” to cover the fact that despite being a corporation with way more money Microsoft just doesn’t seem to be able to win not only with Sony but also Nintendo.

Can't do a thing until Apple gives them the right to do so..
Apple has already announced they will allow sideloading, first in EU because legal requirement and eventually everywhere. Obviously this is a huge opportunity for anyone who isn’t Google/Apple.

MS now owns the #1 most downloaded app in the US store, of course it gives them leverage to eithe pay lower fees on other stores or get a segment of players to use their store if it’s cheaper or beneficial in other ways.

ABK already pays significantly less than the standard 30% on platform fees, although the detail of each platform is not published.

Real talk: When was the last time Microsoft actually innovated a consumer space?

Macintosh > Windows
Netscape > Internet Explorer (zombie)
iPod > Zune (failed)
iPhone > Windows Phone (shitty fail)
PlayStation > Xbox (failing)
Twitch > Mixer (Ninja failed)

And now App Store/Google Play > some shitty name.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a Windows person, I think it's much better software than what Apple offers, but godDAMN are they a creatively bankrupt company.

When has a third party store ever succeeded on mobile. ms stop wasting ur time.

They're preparing for a new regulatory landscape that might allow that to change. Some key exclusive games that are only available in an app store and all of a sudden people are buying games through that app store instead.

He keeps selling new pipedreams to clueless executives in suites of a VERY rich company, so he stays relevant and keeps drawing the paycheque.

It really is as simple as that.

I mean, if you look at the Epic Game Store, it probably wouldn't even exist without Fortnite exclusivity.

There is a lot Microsoft and Sony can do to leverage success on other storefronts, probably more so than Epic on PC.

They'll release a new version of CoD on mobile and discontinue the old versions. The new version will only be downloadable via the Microsoft app store. It'll START with games, but then you'll see that all Microsoft products will become exclusive to that app store and it'll be rebranded from Xbox App to the Microsoft App.

Microsoft will eventually sue Apple and Google for having their marketplace preloaded on their devices.

Eventually, Microsoft will work with devs to put their apps on the Microsoft App store for cheaper than Apple and Google. That's the REAL reason they dropped 70 billion on ABK and why they didn't bow out even after significant regulatory hurdles and gaming company stocks dropping like wildfire.

They want to keep their revenue without sharing with Apple and Google and they want to make revenue themselves by partnering with other devs.

Nobody's changing from Apple Store or Google Store to some shit ass Windows Store just because you can download Candy Crush there.

Stop the bullshit, most population don't give a flying fuck about games, you can remove CoD Mobile today for both stores and nobody would give a shit.

Ask Epic 👍

Yeah, the fact that some people here try to believe this Phil non sense just proves people here have no clue about the real world.

Phil Spencer is just PR, you cannot compete with Juggernauts like Google or Apple.

My problem with this is that they are not bringing more to the table they're taking stuff from the tables people was already sitting at & taking it to their table just to get people to come to their table to eat stuff that would have been on the other to start with.

Yep. They've had a mobile store before, but if they wanted to bring it back why did it require candy crush, COD, etc in order to make it a reality? Why not just use some of the IP they already owned, create something and then relaunch the mobile store in their vision with that?

It just comes down to the fact that they don't want to (or maybe they know deep down that they can't) create content that's good enough to entice mobile consumers towards their store, so they want to leverage things that tens of millions of people are already happily playing via already existing tried and tested content delivery services.

If they are going to pull games from the app/play stores and then use candy crush etc as bait to try and redirect those existing customers to their own store then they deserve to fail.

More and more Xbox and Fill remind of ‘biting more than you can chew’, its just rampant expansion with little thought or care. They dont even have a solid core to build from, Xbox is flagging in just about every way from mediocre releases, puss poor studio management, mixed messaging, shady devs (looking at you Bethesda and your nonstop responding to negative reviews), diminished sales and little to no growth or marketshare. And now they want to add another ecosystem, another storefront, more platforms, more legal woes if they start trying to take on Apple etc…And all of it stems from Xbox and its uppers, it boggles my mind how Microsoft as a parent company can be so hands off and blasé with Xbox just throwing money around when so far its lead to nothing…
Fill really needs to chill and get Xbox in order first, deliver quality to your millions before pursuing billions, fucking common sense man…

After 10 years of shits MS put Phil in charge of this. Satya would be better off putting his mickey in a blender and it will do less damage.

Just because of Candy Crush?

Try Candy Crush, CoD Mobile, Word, Microsoft Teams, cheaper 3rd party apps...

Combine the option of another store, with the eventual removal of a bundled store and yes, only a moron wouldn't see that Microsoft has the potential to make a lot of money from this.

The goal is to get OEMs (Samsung/Nokia/HTC/Huawei) to preinstall the app on their devices, so its ready to use out the box. Dropbox does the same where they give around 25GB free storage if you sign through the preinstalled app.

Mate you're clueless if you think Microsoft will remove these Apps from the other Stores 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Also MS is the one losing, Apple & Google couldn't care less.

I mean, tell me how Windows Phone is working out or the Windows Store on PCs.

You're delusional, nothing else nothin more.

This would be the same playbook of fail that they used in the console space to the amazing results we know about.. If they do remove things like candy crush off the established app stores, then all that accomplishes is to open a gap for new games etc to exploit. Apple might get forced to have more app stores on their devices, but they are not forced to make it user-friendly beyond a certain point.

The ABK machine continues to print money because it's activity is undisturbed, the moment you try to shake up the system you will end up with different results.

Do you have a source for this because I read differently?

People barely want to use the Microsoft store and that's pre-installed on Windows. Xbox thinks people are going to side load their store? Complete lunacy. If they try to make Candy Crush 2 an Xbox game store exclusive; Watch candy crush get forgotten in the flood of moble games in the normal apps stores. Microsoft doesn't have anything that would make it attractive to most people.

Their better off trying to make their own Android phone that comes with the playstore along store their own (if the playstore would even allow that).

The Apple filing is here: https://s2.q4cdn.com/470004039/files/doc_earnings/2023/q4/filing/_10-K-Q4-2023-As-Filed.pdf

The Company is also subject to litigation and investigations relating to the App Store, which have resulted in changes to the Company’s business practices, and may in the future result in further changes. Changes have included how developers communicate with consumers outside the App Store regarding alternative purchasing mechanisms. Future changes could also affect what the Company charges developers for access to its platforms, how it manages distribution of apps outside of the App Store, and how and to what extent it allows developers to communicate with consumers inside the App Store regarding alternative purchasing mechanisms

Although you’re right that they haven’t confirmed anything outside the EU, it’s only rumoured. When it comes to EU they basically have no other option anyway.

For some reason they are obsessed with this notion of reaching billions of gamers before even becoming competent at satisfying millions.
Spot on. When they had over 80 million of us on the 360 we were hooked. Fantastic console. Great games and 3rd party exclusives that we loved. They even (for the large majority) played better on the 360. Then they started to lose the console war during the ps4/xbone era and all of a sudden they think they can reach billions of gamers?! Why not try focusing on 1 thing which is why you got into gaming in the 1st place- CONSOLES!

Maybe he developed an eating disorder due to all the stress with Xbox dying and all.
Lol yes maybe Phil eats when he is sad or upset. He has had A LOT to be sad and upset about in terms of how poorly Xbox has been at selling consoles and games compared to the competition.

I don’t think anything that they’re talking about in the original post means they’re trying to make phones when it sounds like they’re trying to partner with brands to include a Microsoft app that is a storefront for their devices. Think of something like Google play

I think what they’re going to try to do is have their app preinstalled loaded on android devices maybe Samsung to start with and then down to smaller providers

It will probably be a big PR production, Xbox, and Samsung bring gaming to mobile devices with a dedicated X cloud, or optimized port for android devices

I don’t think Microsoft wants to go that route with hardware funds anymore. They lost bad with that. They’re losing bad with Xbox so they’re not gonna go back to providing phones it’s a losing battle at this point for them

I would imagine they will take a different angle like if you are subbed to GP use our store and get 10 skinner box tokens a week or something
