Borderlands 4 |OT| It's about time. Literally.

I believe I finally fixed the issue with my game freezing. 5090 9800xd. My game would freeze/crash at random and now I know it's due to shader caching. I deleted the shader cache for the game and when the game started it rebuilt the shaders and I was able to play for 2 hours with no issues. I noticed slight hitching while playing which is the game still loading some shaders and I believe this was when my game would freeze. Later, I made a change to my video settings and I didn't delete the cache and my game froze again. Once I deleted the cache and let it rebuild no more crashes.

Hopefully they can release a fix for this soon.

I've been trying so many things to stop the game from crashing... And guilty of being gullible, I've been posting my "solutions" here at gaf after the game seemed fine. But the crashes returned, every time, even with the latest patch. ...Until I rebooted Windows to safe mode and deleted all the files in %LOCALAPPDATA%\NVIDIA\DXCache. Now there's been no crashes for 5 hours of gameplay through 3 different sessions. Crossing my fingers it'll hold.

Enjoying the game. Playing it at 4K output with DLSS at performance at 240fps. Sacrificing image quality a bit with "performance" and FG, but it feels so good playing with smooth visuals.

Edit: This fucking game... The issue is back now. But if I delete the cache again it's fine... Geez...
If you change any video settings you have to delete the cache again.

Spent some time hacking two speaker terminals. You press hack and a slow count up to 100 while you fight waves of enemies. It's rather hard.
What does the colors around the location of the speaker mean during the fight?
Do I have to simply survive? Or do I have to protect the hacking bot? I failed one time not knowing why, I didn't die.
But I survied two locations and that big dude is no longer talking in those locations. :)

Two things, this is definitely the best feeling and playing borderlands I played. I was late to the party on borderlands 3 this is the epic store sensitivity and it just felt the first two which is not bad. Four feels a big proper evolution. The movement is good and of course I'm playing on PC and it doesn't hurt to run at fairly stable 60. Great game so far. This is going to be the best in the series if the first 5 hours are anything to go by.

The other thing is I noticed one of the kids at home is playing on PS5. It is pretty rough going for a 4K pretty much 60 experience and looking at the performance mode on ps5. It is acceptable but it's obviously not 4k and doesn't hit 60. Very playable and he is having a blast.

I told him I'd let him try it on PC just to see how it feels in comparison.

The cool part for me is I've played it solo so far. Controls and movement feel tighter. They nailed it. And the gliding mechanics are great and add more gameplay platforming elements.

If anyone dont like popping and have a powerful pc there is a mod that increases the lod distances and improves a lot the look of it. Its not yet in nexus but in discord but I just uploaded it in this website for you papitos. To use it, just drop the folder in the main game folder and then when you are in the game, go to graphical settings and select higher options

Did you try this yet and check how it affect performance?
man, i dont know you guys but all this grass make the game feel generic to me, i m already missing the "Mad Max" vibe of Pandora, all this green just dont feel like Borderlands.

Also, why they removed Borderlands 3 holo menu ? it was so much nicer implementation
I love it. This is best looking and varied entry I've played. I get that it has a certain aesthetic since the game is larger but they did a great job with the look and feel.

It helps that I'm playing it in HDR in and LG OLED vis PC.

I saw a post way earlier that said something about being drab, I could not disagree more. This thing is beautiful and vibrant. Best world in the game to date, to me.

And 5 hours with no crashes btw.

An off screen pic. Look at those boring colors 😱

Thats the problem, too damn colorfull, for me It dosent feel like Borderlands, also Kairos is supposedly a prison planet not Cancun.

Did you try turning the color down?

And nothing wrong with mixing it up. The first 2 games were dreadful. It worked at the time but I welcome how 4 looks.

This is borderlands, not fallout. The game and other systems are so much better that it elevates things even further.

Got to level 18 Amon. Did my first vault solo on hard mode.

His ult makes it easy mode. Just spamming cryo flail lash with extending the duration on hit lets you be invincible while pouring out giga damage non stop.

The reward was very underwhelming…

This game hits like crack. Working on your build and skill points is a lot of fun and legendary gear is always fun to play around with. I hadn't realized how much I had missed Borderlands.

Just a quick question to people, has anybody found a way to make the inventory filters stay set?

Like if I go to the inventory, select a weapon I'd like to replace in my inventory, I'm having to set the filter to by level and then select the max level at top of the list, then when I've selected a weapon and go to select another weapon to replace, all the filters are reset to "by manufacturer" again, which is the most unhelpful filter possible when trying to see new weapons I may have picked up that may be better than the one I'm trying to replace

This is the only gripe I have with the game so far, that trying to manage new weapons is more difficult than it needs to be, if the filter just stayed the same after you select it it wouldn't be a problem, but it keeps resetting to "By Manufacturer" every time you close the menu

Thats working as intended, but probably an easy QoL fix for a later patch.

I've added an image to my original post just to try and explain it better, these filters used to stay set to whatever you set them to in the old games, seems to be an oversite from the developers

Great game. Really liking the characters, both story characters and just the general side story characters. The Voice acting is great, subtle humor here and there and a good balance of that and more serious stuff.

And i really dig this open world so far, far from empty, all kinds of structures and stuff giving it a unique look and worth exploring. I do hope there will be more than just this green landscape though, preferably some desert too. From the PS5 Pro footage we know there's a snow landscape too.

The game is certainly good - playing this on a RTX 4080 PC at 1440p Badass settings - but I am disappointed in the visuals considering how demanding the game is. It barely looks better than Borderlands 3 on PC in my opinion yet runs far, far worse with stuttering and, in my case, at least one crash to the desktop in 10 hours of play. Runs okay though, VRR helps but I am not using frame gen as if feels a bit off for me and seems to cause more stuttering in my experience playing with an uncapped framerate on a 360 Hz QD-OLED monitor.

Graphics are certainly nice enough but hardly stunning in my view. And despite using all of UE5's feature set: Nanite, Lumen and VSMs (virtual shadow maps), I am still seeing a lot of pop in of grass (which noticeably can be seen fading in) and trees have this weird LOD "jerk" plus shadows can be seen popping in. Not quite the UE5 showcase I was expecting after playing many other UE5 games that despite also having issues, look and run far better than this.

Me thinks this game was prioritised for consoles and pushed out the door before the PC version was properly finished and optimised. Looking forward very much to Digital Foundry's coverage, especially of the PC version...

I've got this sidequest that I can't seem to drop.

The one where you have to butt slam the 3 platforms quickly in the desert

I want to drop it because of the button pressing difficulty. Any ideas how? I don't see an option in the menus.

Maybe the villain are better written but some the side characters are still like chalk on a board when they banter between them :lollipop_squinting:

Please tell me i don't have to engage with the outbounders ever again after i complete their set of missions...

How did you delete the shader cache?
C:\Users\xxx\AppData\Local\NVIDIA\DXCache xxx is your windows userid. Run the game first then exit so the game files will be the most recent in the directory and delete the top ones.

I also turned on Nvidia metrics for a bit and that caused a crash so I turned that off and then I played for 3 hours last night without crashing. I quit the game 3 times and didn't have to refresh my cache when I started again, but your results may vary. I have 9 hours in the game so far.

Characters are not well balanced at all, some classes are op since the beginning and some classes feel like you need to get 10 points in the skill tree to get them going and they still don't get as good as others...

The gravitard has some interesting powers but at the beginning it really feels like you use the skill in like 2 sec and then you wait 30-40 sec for it to recharge, you don't feel as "naked" with other characters, their skills are much more present and you constantly feel like you are using them in combat.

I think that's been a flaw in the whole series.

I went with Vex exactly for that reason. They always balance the Siren class, or at least allow for strong builds.

As you say, other classes fall flat until certain traits are unlocked.

I went with vex aswell.

She is strong since the beginning and 2 of her 3 skill trees are at least more involved to use than rafa shoulder cannons or amon spamming ice whip or axes.

Even a bit too involved :lollipop_grinning_sweat:, costantly changing weapon and elements to maximize the type of damage of the dog or clones can be a handful sometimes and clones end up doing like 80% of the damage so it's a bit of a layback playstyle.

I really like the concept of harlowe bubble skill, it require involvment and look fun to use to chain how many enemies you can but at the start is not fun at all to use and you feel naked for most of the fight.

Is there a point where the game get much harder? Because for now it's somehow more brainless than bl3, i have NO IDEA what the fuck the journalists played when they said the game ismuch harder unoess they are talking only about boss fights, because trash mobs and badasses go down like nothing.

I suspect that journalists have found it difficult as they've main liked the story quests and not levelled up sufficiently.

As you say, as soon as you're roughly the same level, it's extremely easy. I don't really mind. I've never associated BL with challenge. It's just a numbers machine and case of grinding the right weapons.

I was able to abandon some bounty board quests. Select the one you want to abandon and hold down the button stated on the lower right of that same screen.

I don't know if you can abandon side quests.

Edit-also on the quests are organized in tabs. Like factions and such. You might need to tab over to the one containing that quest.

I would like some challenge to make exploration and progression more meaningfull.

I don't get any excitement for my next skill unlock if my current skills alreayd fuck up everything.

Unlocking stuff and finding new weapons should be more exciting than just big numbers.

If the game continue to be this easy i'm probably gonna bail out sooner or later.

its just me or anyone else are getting lost in combat ? like, i cant see the enemies, i m always looking at the radar cause they blend so well with the busy environment that i cant barely see anyone

How do you like Borderlands 4 so far? I know you spend about 300 hours into BL3.

I saw people on reee saying the same thing, enemies kinda blend with the environment a bit.

i didn't play a lot cause of work, but at least i got home way earlier than i was supposed to got ( happy here ). I have played every character around lvl 10 to get a feeling of which one i ll play it till the endgame ( I liked Rafa and Vex and i m split between those two), gameplay is good so far, i m getting a bit(lot) lost in combat, like a cant see the enemies and i didnt like Kairos that much, for a planet that was supposed to be a prison, hidden from everyone until the events of Borderlands 3, everyone is just living their normal lives likes everything is fine, it doesnt feel at all like a "prison" planet and imo doesnt fit the theme.

Story wise i cant tell much since i m testing the character and didnt have time to progress the story so far, but the game feels good atm.

i m getting completly lost, like, i cant see from where i m getting shot 70% of the time, its driving me crazy, it may be the initial area feeling.

Dude i'm playing BL3 right now and it really is underrated imo, it's a big step up in gameplay compared to BL2, i would give it a better score than 81, i know the story and villain aren't as good as in BL2 but I'm here for gameplay and so far it delivers.

i think Borderlands 3 gameplay feels more "impactful" than BL4, i dont know if its the sound design, the reduced recoil in Borderlands 4 or how enemies react while been shot, but i like 3 a little more than 4, also never had this "getting lost in combat" problem in any Borderlands.

Do you mean gameplay wise or all in all better than 4?
But yeah, gunplay feels good in BL3 very satisfying.

I don't remember if it was the same on 3 but i don't like that to have proper reactions and ragdoll you only have to use ballistic weapons, everything that is elemental, 95% of the time end with the same precanned death animation of the enemy being melted on the spot while screaming with his body becoming intangible and bullets not hitting anymore.

And enemies becoming intangible while i shoot at them is something i really hate.

4 has a lot of verticality witch is good and welcome for the series, but my problem atm its that i think enemies blend too much with the environment and the gunplay feels a little less "crisp" than in BL3, also the choice of using this awful menu instead of Echo3 ( holo menu ) is baffling to me and thats why atm i think BL3 gameplay is better.

I cant talk much about the story cause i didnt progressed one bit, i m doing just side quest and bounts, but i dont immagine it being worse than 3 story.

You're missing out. Might be an unpopular opinion, but I'd say it's the best of the first three games (I've yet to play the fourth one).
Dude i don't even think bl4 gunplay is anywhere near as good as 20 years old fear1, bl1 would feel way too ancient to play.

Even movement wise, i can't play fps without a dodge or slide anymore...

yep I was able to abandon a bounty board contract quest but I guess actual sidequests can't be abandoned... yet

It's a fun game and it's just more Borderlands. I'm playing it on hard and the difficulty is more enjoyable. No problems yet on the series X yet but just performance problems in split screen. It's just not as smooth as the other three games in split screen and I'm probably the minority for that.

i dont remember either , but my problem is with Jakobs guns, BL4 Jakobs have a lot less punch, at least is how i feel, also i miss Atlas weapon :(
