Borderlands 4 will cut back on 'toilet humor,' says Gearbox

Everything we've seen about Borderlands 4 so far, which to be fair isn't much, very strongly suggests that yes, it will be a Borderlands game. But some things are changing. As we said when the first Borderlands 4 trailer dropped at The Game Awards last week, the art style that made the previous games so visually distinctive appears to be fading into the background. And earlier today, narrative director Sam Winkler said on X that the "toilet humor" so prevalent in Borderlands 3 is going to be dialed back too—pretty dramatically, from the sounds of it.

I don't think anyone would say that Borderland was ever a "serious" game series, but Borderlands 3 was a bit much, to put it mildly.

"It's stuck in the late '00s, when surface level vulgarity was enough to qualify as edgy—Borderlands 3 is seriously obsessed with turds—and when the series was first conceived," we wrote in our 2019 review. "It's stuck in a time when memes lasted months rather than days, when referential humor was still a novelty and not exhausting, when you could point at something the slightest bit abnormal or gross and call it a joke."

That style of comedy hadn't aged particularly well even then, and five years down the road I imagine it hasn't gotten any better. Luckily, Borderlands 4 appears to be aiming higher on the comedy front: Narrative director Sam Winkler said today that he's "gotten to work with some of the funniest people I know as contract writers" on the game, but in response to someone who expressed hope for "dark humor instead of fart jokes," he replied, "Not at liberty to talk much about the content of BL4, but I remain firm in my criticism of BL3's overabundance of toilet humor."

Lest there be any doubt as to where Winkler stands on the matter, he was somewhat more pointed in another post: "I’m not gonna say there's no toilets but if the word 'skibidi' ships in the game under my watch I'm gonna cry real tears. Paul Tassi joked that we were gonna have a gun called Hawk 2A and a fellow dev asked me if it was real and I wanted to put my hand down the sink grinder."

That's good news. I like scatological humor as much as the next guy but it's a rickety frame to build a narrative on, and at some point, enough is enough: "Pull my finger" was funny when my grandpa did it, but I was also eight, and he didn't do it over and over repeatedly for 30 hours. I don't expect Borderlands 4 will be a "sophisticated" game in any sense, and we'd all probably be disappointed if it was, but stepping it up from an endless litany of poop jokes is definitely movement in the right direction.

I’m relieved to hear that. I don’t think I can handle another game that tries so so hard to be funny like Borderlands 3 and Wonderlands
I thought Wonderlands had some decent good jokes in its mix. Don't get me wrong, it's got its fair share of stinkers too, but I found Wonderlands to be tolerable if not enjoyable, which was a marked step up from Borderlands 3. Borderlands 3's writing ruined the game, frankly. I'll never finish it or go back to it. I just can't deal with that never ending shit in my ears.

I didn’t play Borderlands for the Plot and Story, but my gosh did BL3’s voice actors and the stuff they yelled into the mike get in the way of a having a good time.
Absurd is fine, But jumping around for attention in the sound booth is irritating.

No big deal, I know the target audience for these types of stuff, you could find them on YouTube but I won't mention channels.

Love me some Borderlands 1 and 2. 3 was such an epic letdown. Please be good and get back to better guns and less annoying jackassery and bring back the dark humor.

The game looks like BL3 DLC
The last fucking thing i want is more BL3 DLC..

I want the series to grow. Try another art style anything man…

Not this 🤣

I also didn't care much for the locations in BL3. Felt weird to be in a futuristic neon light city for example, instead of some frozen or toxic wasteland. Felt more like Destiny or something.

I liked Borderlands 1's blend of dark nihilism and the absurd. 2 is a mixed bag. Jack was funny, if a bit much. Tina could be launched into a nearby star and improve the game's tone and humor significantly in one easy step.
The surreal atmosphere and isolation and decent loot and rng systems are what I like about BL1 the most. I tend to prefer BL1 over any of the other games. If Gearbox took notes from Deep Rock Galactic they could have something special. I like humor but you have to actually be funny instead of just cringe.

I don't think they will have a decent villain barring Jack since Jack has a well written story to go along with how paranoid and unhinged he turned out to be.

Make a good game and that's it

My expectations were so high for 3 after the incredible 2 (1800 hours on it). But the game was so mid it's insane.

I don't have any expectations about 4 and I literally don't care at this point. But if it's gonna be a real banger like they promise we'll i believe when i see.

I've never tried anything in this series, were the first games considered good or just meh?
Well what makes the first game interesting is mostly its unique artstyle. Gunplay is somewhat standard for the time and story is mostly meh. 2 and the Pre-sequel i consider two of my favorite games of all time.
