Microsoft issued IGN with the following statement as to why the price increases were taking place:

"We understand that these changes are challenging, and they were made with careful consideration given market conditions and the rising cost of development. Looking ahead, we continue to focus on offering more ways to play more games across any screen and ensuring value for Xbox players."

With games hitting a maximum of $80 later in the year, Microsoft sources confirmed to me that, games will still be priced on a scale to reflect their scope, as is the case today. Smaller games could still come in at $50 or less, for example, while AAA big-budget titles like a new Call of Duty are doubtlessly going to hit that maximum price tier.

God damn, this is the first generation where being an early adopter is paying off in dividends.

Ridiculous that consoles are seeing price increases in their fifth year of operation, not decreases.

Now they can lean back and watch the money roll in from those tens of consoles that people will buy. What a ridiculous price. The Series S is almost the same price as the PS5 now.

Sony too has been increasing their console prices. I guess the difference here is that they're actually selling their hardware. Microsoft here aren't really losing anything as nothing of nothing is still nothing.

May as well pour all their efforts into 3rd party and developing games as Sony sure isn't doing that.

The only reason I can think why they're still planning another console generation is that they've got a bold new strategy. If they were following the same failing pattern then I think they'd just give up at this stage. I guess that makes me somewhat interested to see what they do for the next generation.

Never I would have imagined 5 years ago that this gen would see consoles keeping their launch price so long without a price cut...

Let alone fucking increase it!

This is a first, I don't think it has ever happened before in videogames, other products maybe?

How funny this is. They are struggling to sell consoles and they rush to increase the price.

Stuff keeps increasing in price, meanwhile, salaries remain the same. So basically, all this is just to make millionaires happy.

Edit: They are doing this to further persuade people away from purchasing consoles and games, and make them join Game Pass. If games are expensive, people will want to subscribe (At least that seems to be their train of thought).

I've been gaming for a LONG time, and this is the first console generation in memory where the aging hardware was sold for MORE at the end of the generation than it was at the beginning.

XSX at $599.99 is CRAZY considering the PS5 Pro exists.

Imagine how much their steambox is gonna cost.

They are giving up. They know their future is as a 3rd party publisher.

AFAIK Sony hasn't increased their price in the US at all. This also helps Switch 2 by making everyone hypocrites who blamed it. I also own a XSX so my consoles just got more valuable. If Sony don't raise their prices in the US, this is the nail in the coffin on the series consoles. Wow, it feels good to see this day. Microshaft finally coming home to roost. All because they want to make the trade war look bad and because Nadalla refuses to eat 100 dollars per console sold when they aren't selling any consoles, instead of waiting it out a few more days. This is lunacy and I'm here for it. Goood on you microshaft. I think your next console should cost a million since gamepass is just so good.

Hey gamepass fans, wanna talk more about how much of a banger gamepass has been in 2025?

Lol what's their plan?

Try to cash as much as possible before pulling out of hardware completely?

"We're not selling anymore anyway, so might as well try to charge maximum for the last few sales."

Speaks a lot about the current worldwide economy and the rise of manufacturing costs. I am definitely not surprised though.

They already did last month

Yep.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo (you know they'll jack up Switch 2 prices in a year or so) do this because they know gamers will pay it.

Want to play your Xbox or PlayStation library on next gen systems? Be prepared to pay north of 800.

The Series X with 2TB at 729$, more than the Pro 🫣

With these prices their sales will be completely dead soon, but that's probably the plan, they don't care and it's better to have a profitable niche hardware business than losing money for a goal that is not relevant for them anymore given their multiplatform publisher status.

In any case it's clear that the age of low priced console hardware is generally over, 500$ is the new entry price and for high end products price will be even higher.

Where is the "hold my Beer" gif?

Sony and MS just gave Nintendo a gift. And MS increasing US prices will only help Sony.

One of the reasons I don't own a "current" gen console, by the time you could really walk in in any store and impulse buy, it had gone up in price.

I still blame COVID where people are now happy to pay more for the same thing. It's kind of like how the millennium changed New Year's Eve forever when pubs charged for entry (even for no shows) and it's continued ever since and where people accept it

You edited out Nintendo, it seems
I'm not okay with any of the platform holders when they raise software prices, no matter who did it first (Sony, Nintendo, or MS). I edited the post out since it's not fair to just single out one platform holder when evidently they are all doing it.
