Hey im a big fan of that black culture OT thread you guys have. Long time listener first time caller stuff here

My question for you guys is what is "fuckery" and what is Empire and how are they connected

Also, what ever happened to that pony fella you guys had? Did he lose his way in life :,(

What's up with black people giving other black people a hard time about doing well in school? Way back in high school and now in college I had several friends tell me they were always catching shit for "acting white" because they sat in the front of class and well, I don't know, didn't hang with the guys who made this shit up? I could never make sense of it, and I just saw it happen to two guys in one of my college classes. I get the picking on the nerd thing, but this specifically is purely racially motivated, and obviously it bothers these guys and I'm not in any position to give advice on the subject...

Jealously and envy really, especially from those who came from rougher backgrounds, very sad mentality.

The women over here smell like coconut. As if they all use the same cream or shampoo. I was just wondering if that's a thing.

Smells good tho.
Oh, coconut oil? It's pretty good.

I think I read an article about this. It posited that this phenomenon stems from a frustration of not being able to be black and successful. Many black people feel like they have to make a choice of one or the other; that if they choose to embrace their blackness--their names, their cultures, their hair, the way they talk, or dress, etc.--it will be much harder to be successful. They may get tripped up in a world of constant code-switching, or run into strange dress codes or regulations that target their natural hairstyles, or find themselves getting more callbacks for job offers when they stop using their first name "LeDarius" and start using their middle name "James."

Giving peers shit in school for succeeding comes from the other side of that coin: by choosing to be successful, some perceive that to mean one has chosen to forsake their blackness. They say you've sold out, or you're acting white. It's a pushback against assimilation, against a pressure to stay inside the lines, to not be "too black" (or rather too "threatening"). So when those people see someone willingly going along with that, they either shake their heads in shame or give that person a hard time.

I live in Minnesota, and I've been called an Oreo and all that kind of shit early on in school (even by some white friends...). But growing up with a lot of those same peers, there were times when we were older where there was a mutual (and uncomfortable) understanding that we were in awkward social positions from both sides. And I've felt this same frustration myself. So while I think giving someone shit for trying to be successful is pretty shitty, I understand where that comes from.

If I like the Boondocks and a black friend also likes and regularly quotes the show, should I still say "N-word" when I quote the show around him?

Legitimately not sure.

Don't think that's exclusive to black people.

Good thread, Bronx Man.

What is your favorite BBQ sauce?

My kids like Sweet Baby Ray's. I'm a Stubb's man myself.

Any black author recommendations?

Can you just never say it? it's not that big a deal to just not say it.

Is your affinity towards chicken, fried in particular, racial or cultural?
My love of Popeyes is a genetic predisposition, apparently.

For non-fiction, I'd recommend Ta-Nehisi Coates. For fiction, I've been reading A Brief History of Seven Killings by Marlon Jones and it is fantastic.

what's thirteen minus fifty?

Negative thirty-seven.

Favorite disney movie?

Ninja gaiden black, god hand, god of war, metal gear rising, bayonetta or devil may cry 3?

Jackie chan, donnie yen or bruce lee?

Commando or die hard?

In some meme images I have seen a distinction between light and dark skin as a signifier of some trait (personality, behavior, what have you), but I have never been able to figure out whether there is an actual pattern to it. Is there, for example, some perception that darker skin makes you more "black" culture-wise or something similar?

Totally serious question, btw,

I've never found it true in my experience. I've know light-skin gangbangers and I've known dark dudes that were kinda nerdy, always into that the whole weeaboo lifestyle. We're all one people, some just can't realize it.

do you have a lawyer that is familiar with copyright

asking for a friend who may or may not be Paul Mooney

okay serious question: how long do you think this thread's going to last

As a black man asking another black man. What is this obsession Asians (not just Filipinos) have with saying the N word? Like it actually is weird.
