What is this trying to prove? According to that marketing, you're stuck with the packed in earbuds to even use the damn thing. Worthless device.

It was a massive flop and they went back to regular buttons for the next iteration. (Probably should have clarified that.)

It is still to me the prime example of Apple going way too far with their obsession of making stuff small and slim at the cost of usability.

I understand the outrage. I listen to a lot of podcasts using wired headphones, especially at work. However, I also don't really care. The dongle is fine for me. I'll grab a pair of lightning earbuds at some point just to not have to use the dongle, but I'm still gonna pick up the phone anyway. It's a nice upgrade for me, I prefer the Apple ecosystem, and I like the camera features.

Let's just hope they are built better than the lightning cables.

All my official cables looks like this eventually.

As long as it comes with the adapter this isn't a big deal to me. I don't listen to music while my phone is charging so this makes absolutely no difference to me at all.

I also find it telling that in less than 24 hours this thread has more posts than a thread about Samsung doing a mass recall on their exploding phones.

I have a really nice pair of headphones and use them while I charge my phone probably 70% of the time. This literally stops me from doing one of the main things I use my phone for. Garbage.

Gotcha. Sorry, I thought that was an Apple defense post.

It kind of sucks but I know in a couple of years I'll be super happy that I'm using wireless headphones.

The one positive is that the demand this will drive may lead to more bt headphone competition. It sucks for now though.

It's truly amazing that a company that routinely removes features from their devices is so revered and defended.

Oh FUCK YOU.
the sad shit is that people will eat this shit up. Jesus fucking Christ will people eat this shit up. Everyone gonna have poopy mouths and think they're eating chocolate.

1. There are already water resistant phones WITH headphone jacks.
2. DRM and Content management may or may not be an issue, but don't act like you aren't trying to force people into buying $250 + over-expensive-for-what-you-get wireless beats, air-pods, and new adapters (look at the fucking macbook. $80 dongle? FFS)
3. The reason those other things (for the most part) were ditched was because of convenience of sale or of use. Making older tech harder to use via a dongle and making it less convenient so you can't charge and listen is 100% forced obsolescence. Floppies stopped being prevalent because higher capacity storage that was easier to deal with came along.

FFS...

fuck

I'm not sure a removed port is worth the coronary you're having. You act like Apple shot your dog and then said afterwards it was trying to kill them.

Every time they have "removed a feature" in the past it has worked out for the best.

Say what you want about Apple or this move, but it's objectively true that they have a solid history of improving the industry through progressive development.

But the transition is inevitable. You’ve got to do it at some point. Sooner or later the headphone jack is going away. There are just too many reasons aligned against it sticking around any longer.

And what are those reasons?

The newness of the iPhone 7's upgrades has already worn off for me. While the internal improvements are great, I don't care whatsoever about a 2nd speaker or a better camera that I never use anyway. I use my 3.5mm every single day whether in the car with the AUX port or with my IEM's commuting.

I think I'm just going to upgrade from my 6 Plus to 6S Plus and wait for next year, and a year to see how everyone reacted.

What about removing USB ports from the new Macbook?

I'm also not a fan of ethernet port removal, but that one isn't too bad.

And what are those reasons?

muh wires.

I don't see why everything needs to be wireless.

As it's been stated over and over and over again, usually when Apple removes a feature it's because there's something tangibly better either right there or coming up to replace it. Even when they dropped USB type-A ports on the new Macbook and all the inconvenience it's causing in the here and now, everyone knows type-C is better in every way.

What technology is coming up that beats the 3.5mm port?

We've already discussed this? Wireless. You may not agree, just as plenty didn't agree downloads/streaming would be better.

Sales of wireless headphones have just eclipsed wired for the first time and the tech has gotten dramatically better. It's only going to continue to improve. Advancement will be even faster with this change.

no its going to be much worse when everyone is using wireless, crowding up the frequency, causing interference

I can see iTunes getting nuked as it exists today. It barely has a reason to exist anymore.

All that there should be is a cloud of your content and the old way of thinking where the PC or Mac as a middleman isn't really necessary anymore for the vast majority of uses. They are not sync machines though.

A PC or a MAC as end media storage is fine, just like a iPhone or iPad is end media storage.

... This is a joke post right?

Yeah like how every meeting room now "requires" a dongle to connect Macbooks to AV equipment. That definitely worked out for the best...for Apple

Apple is all about the upsell now. They are done on the volume game, an erosion by a thousand small cuts is happening on the price premium too. Brazen shit like this just fuels that.

Wonder how long the European carriers will put up with forced subsidisation....the EC should look into that, someone should give Margrethe a call.

A vile company, have been for sometime.

I keep coming back to this because people keep bringing up floppies and optical drives as if dropping the 3.5mm port is in any way on the same level. If "wireless" is the only benefit users will see - at the cost of simplicity, flexibility, and convenience - you've already lost the argument.

As for the whole sales argument, I just have to shake my head and laugh. Yeah, people buy wireless headsets and they're getting better, none of which is being blocked or impeded by the existence of a 3.5mm port.

Not to mention many wireless sets function wired for you know when their battery dies...

I'm sure manufacturers will make usb-c and lightning versions of their headphones. Like Sennheiser has a 30€ cable for their Urbanites to have controls on a android (if you bought an iPhone version of the cans)

Cables and dongles apparently are where the money is at? 3.5mm dongle, splitter dongles (to charge and listen), usbc to lightning, lightning to usbc, endless possibilities to get money from suckers.

And I'm fine with this. As long as there is an option for no DRM.

I will be getting the iPhone 7+, but I will not be buying those AirPods. I will stick with the lightning headphones that come with it, and I will leave the adapter at work (I use different headphones at work). While this works just fine for me I can imagine different situations where there is no real solution for the user.

That said Apple should of went wireless charging. This would solved several of the complaints by allowing you to use the lightning headphones while charging.

The price for the AirPods isn't absurd. It is very much in line with other products in the category.

Thanks to the removal of 3.5mm, that market can now flourish and become much more cost effective. I am sincerely grateful to Apple right now!

Will the wireless connection to the headphones drain the battery faster than the 3.5mm jack? Perhaps not even enough to notice, especially with the larger battery.

Grateful? Do you work for Apple?

Obviously there is some small hit to communicate over bluetooth, but it's really negligible with Bluetooth 4+ devices. I only ever notice a problem with the battery in the headphone devices themselves. For example, I use the powerbeats 2 (yeah, beats, say what you want but as far as I'm concerned it's really the best workout-ready BT earphones on the market) and I need to look at recharging them every 3rd day or so.

It's a quick process but still, gotta fish out a MicroUSB cable, plug it in, and then remember to grab it again before I head out for the day.

EDIT: Interesting, powerbeats3 has the Apple W1 mode, but still uses MicroUSB for charging?

I can't get over how stupid this is

can't charge and listen at the same time
can't use your lighting headphones with your apple computer
can't use them on your work computer

sure you can buy another dongle, but are you gonna carry your dongle with you all the time?

revenue has, not sales.

54% of revenue, 17% of sales.

Apple have form for this. I have an AV cable for my iPad 3 that worked when it came out but after an update it was flagged as incompatible.
