Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 |OT| Back to black

Wondering what's new in Black Ops this year? Here's an overview:

Blackout:

A first for the COD series, Blackout is a true Battle Royale mode where 80 or so players drop into a very large map, and the last person alive wins.

Players can go in solo, in pairs, or in groups of four.

Classic Black Ops muliplayer maps and landmarks can be found within the much larger Blackout map.

Classic and modern Black Ops multiplayer gear can be found and used. Everything from RC cars used for recon, to newer equipment such as the grappling hook, tripmines, and the sensor dart.

Perks are consumables in Blackout. They're on a timer and found in the open world.

An in-game challenge system is used to unlock new characters, which are strictly cosmetic content.

Limited time events will change the way the game works, and provide players with new ways to play. Examples seen in the beta have included removing snipers and assault rifles from the game, having the circle close in much faster, and adding a zombies boss to the game.

Multiplayer:

Takes place in the near future, but as a prequel to Black Ops 3 multiplayer.

14 maps at launch, with a free Nuketown remake coming next month. Ten are new maps, and the other four are remakes of classic Black Ops 1 and 2 maps, Firing Range, Summit, Jungle, and Slums.

A return to "boots on the ground" gameplay means no jetpack jumping or wall running.

A new "hero shooter" type specialists system that give each player new abilities.

Character abilities take the place of lethal equipment, and don't count against the pick 10 equipment limit.

Players have slightly more health, and assists now count as kills.

Players no longer heal over time, and instead have to heal themselves. They can do this by pressing L1 or LB at anytime. Healing itself is faster than previous games, but the act of healing does have a short cooldown.

A new type of equipment acts as a "fourth perk" class, and allows for more variety. Faster healing, faster ability charges, fewer points needed for killstreaks, and a "Destiny" style proximity radar system are just some examples.

The new operator mod system changes the way some guns work entirely. They're only unlocked after unlocking all other attachments, and require three of your pick 10 points to use.

Zombies:

In a first for the series, there are three full Zombies maps at launch.

New difficulty settings and tutorials should make Zombies more welcoming to new players, while also providing much more challenging options for series veterans.

A new Zombie Rush mode simplifies the game, and should also be good for beginners.

Bot support means players can still experience Zombies in any group size, or even solo.

Detailed new customization settings mean players can alter the game in many ways, and will be able to use codes to reproduce an exact assortment of settings, perfect for custom challenges.

A new "Callings" feature, which are curated limited time events.

Anybody know what happens when you collect 800 minutes of double xp in the Monster energy promo? It's some kind of milestone.

I find it infinitely less common on the console versions compared to PC, at least with the older games.
I saw it everywhere in WWII on xbox last year. It just got so annoying when 2 people on the other team were just running around one-shotting everyone with a gun that isn't designed for run-and-gun.

I wish they'd just make it so that sniper rifles have to be actually zoomed in before shooting instead of just letting people abuse the controller aim-assist. The people making the games must think it's good design since they've never changed it.

Ah, never got a chance to play WW2. I have almost stuck entirely with Treyarch since MW2's release. Wasn't a fan of Sledghammer or Infinity Ward's titles since. Is BLOPS 4 any good, btw? Bit worried since it lacks a SP campaign to see if it is worth the purchase.

I'd hope not. They're already selling retail copies. You should check to see if the unlock time has changed.

Also knew to BLOPS the game is locked behind a day 1 patch (55GB I read on eurogamer) so you have to go online to play it. At least there is no single player behind an online check in like last years COD Ww2 (because no single player)

Yeah WW2 was my first COD in many years. It was fun for a while, I'll give it that. Then it turned into everyone running around with the same SMG or quickscoping.

I won't know if 4 is any good until midnight tonight but I hope it's good! I mostly bought it for the battle royale mode that I found really fun in the beta.

I've played the beta for the last several COD games, and Black Ops 4 was the last one I enjoyed since Black Ops 3. I've heard WW2 got better, but the beta was even worse than Infinite Warfare, IMO. For anyone who actually plays COD multiplayer, the changes that they made for Black Ops 4 are pretty significant.

Played for 3h, it's great, just like the beta. Almost shed a tear the first time I saw slums in glorious HD. This will be an entertaining weekend.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
Nine hours left before it’s available for me. Struggle has been real after seeing so many with physical disc playing yesterday.

God, I really hate the quick scoping horseshit.
You and me both. That's why I liked BO3 so much. It was extremely difficult to do and I hardly ever saw it. WW2 was the worst since BO2 for quick scoping. It was everywhere.

Treyarch said it was going to take great skill to pull it off in this one. Apparently not.

They keep it in for the kids.

I´m probably picking this up down the line since I´ve always liked CoD as a time killer that I don´t have to take too seriously. I´m undecided between PS4 and PC though. Gonna have to see where the majority playerbase makes their way.

Seems HDR is still off on this game. No calibration apart from brightness, dropping slider to 0 and logo is still visible. Overall washed out. Expected them to fix this from the beta.

Well the fact that I accidentally played 4+ hours straight on a midnight launch means I must have kinda liked the game at least. Some of the maps make modes like Domination feel so spammy. I did really like the Control mode, though.

And of course Blackout was really nice. I don't have any fancy equipment to monitor performance, but I can tell it was significantly improved for the regular PS4 from the beta.

I’m reallly craving something to hold me over until RDR2, but at the same time, I’m not sure if I’m willing to fork up $60 for COD again. I fell for the hype when BO3 came out and I couldn’t stand that game, despite really enjoying the previous two.

If you didn't like BO3, you should probably avoid this one. Unless you're a big battle royale fan.

Isn’t this one ‘boots on the ground’ though? My biggest complaint about 3 was the soldier mobility.

Most of the speed from the last Black Ops is there, but no boost jumping and no wall running. If it was the speed of the game that bothered you, this might not be what you wanted, although the game still feels a fair bit slower without the advanced movement system of Black Ops 3.

The developers were committed to making "boots on the ground" mean just that. In the first weekend of the beta, players weren't limited by repeated jumping, so they could just hop around constantly making themselves harder to kill in a gunfight. By the second weekend, the developers lowered the height of your jump to almost nothing by your second or third repeated jump. They also reduced slide speed and distance.

I played quite a lot of the beta, so thankfully I already know that I enjoy the multiplayer.

Accessing the additional content seems to be broken at the moment on Xbox One.

I bought the deluxe edition that comes with the pass and the Classified map. The map showed up in my "Ready to install" list, but the pass did not. After installing the map, it's still not recognised as installed by the game. When I go to the Store page for the pass, it says it's already installed and only gives me a "Manage" option. Loads of people are having issues on Reddit and Twitter.

As for the game, I gave it a quick go. I haven't played a COD game in 10 years, but I remember the TTK always being fairly low. In the regular multiplayer in this, the TTK seems a lot higher than it used to be, although maybe I'm just using a shit gun. Some players seemed to be able to turn on me and kill me in a handful of shots, even though I caught them unawares and started shooting at them first.

I didn't really know what was going on in the zombie mode. I used to love the zombies in COD: WAW and after playing through the tutorial it seemed similar, but when I played an actual game with real players, I was a bit lost, for instance, when it came to what directions on the D-pad did. I dunno - I didn't enjoy much, as it didn't have that zombie feel that I remember.

Right now I regret buying it based on my first impressions, but I've changed my mind about plenty of games in the past once I've played them for a decent amount of time and that might well happen with this.

If it helps, I thought several maps in the beta were awful at first, until I learned their layout. Now there's only one map that I kind of still dislike, but even that one is much better than it seemed at first. Attachments seem to matter much more this year as well, so guns can feel pretty week for a while. There's some extreme examples of this in the game, such as the pump action shotgun that takes two shots to kill at even point blank range, until you get an attachment that you don't unlock for a while.

Some operator mods are also really effective. But you're right that guns feel a bit week at first. Hopefully the game will grow on you.

Thanks man. There were players on the enemy team that were level 28 and I was obviously level 1, so I'm guessing they'd unlocked a bunch of stuff and I hadn't.

Make sure you're also checking out the different early preset load outs. Personally the one with the swordfish feels exactly how I want it to. And if there isn't one you like, you'll unlock create a class pretty quickly.

How is performance/optimization on PC? Just noticed this isn´t available on steam and I don´t wanna run the risk without a refund option. Will it run on a low-mid end system? Doesn´t need to look pretty, just perform at an acceptable framerate.

I must say, slightly disappointed with the poor iq in Blackout on Pro. No improvement since beta, and texture loading delays and other glitches seem more prominent now even.
