Wondering what's new in Black Ops this year? Here's an overview:
Blackout:
A first for the COD series, Blackout is a true Battle Royale mode where 80 or so players drop into a very large map, and the last person alive wins.
Players can go in solo, in pairs, or in groups of four.
Classic Black Ops muliplayer maps and landmarks can be found within the much larger Blackout map.
Classic and modern Black Ops multiplayer gear can be found and used. Everything from RC cars used for recon, to newer equipment such as the grappling hook, tripmines, and the sensor dart.
Perks are consumables in Blackout. They're on a timer and found in the open world.
An in-game challenge system is used to unlock new characters, which are strictly cosmetic content.
Limited time events will change the way the game works, and provide players with new ways to play. Examples seen in the beta have included removing snipers and assault rifles from the game, having the circle close in much faster, and adding a zombies boss to the game.
Multiplayer:
Takes place in the near future, but as a prequel to Black Ops 3 multiplayer.
14 maps at launch, with a free Nuketown remake coming next month. Ten are new maps, and the other four are remakes of classic Black Ops 1 and 2 maps, Firing Range, Summit, Jungle, and Slums.
A return to "boots on the ground" gameplay means no jetpack jumping or wall running.
A new "hero shooter" type specialists system that give each player new abilities.
Character abilities take the place of lethal equipment, and don't count against the pick 10 equipment limit.
Players have slightly more health, and assists now count as kills.
Players no longer heal over time, and instead have to heal themselves. They can do this by pressing L1 or LB at anytime. Healing itself is faster than previous games, but the act of healing does have a short cooldown.
A new type of equipment acts as a "fourth perk" class, and allows for more variety. Faster healing, faster ability charges, fewer points needed for killstreaks, and a "Destiny" style proximity radar system are just some examples.
The new operator mod system changes the way some guns work entirely. They're only unlocked after unlocking all other attachments, and require three of your pick 10 points to use.
Zombies:
In a first for the series, there are three full Zombies maps at launch.
New difficulty settings and tutorials should make Zombies more welcoming to new players, while also providing much more challenging options for series veterans.
A new Zombie Rush mode simplifies the game, and should also be good for beginners.
Bot support means players can still experience Zombies in any group size, or even solo.
Detailed new customization settings mean players can alter the game in many ways, and will be able to use codes to reproduce an exact assortment of settings, perfect for custom challenges.
A new "Callings" feature, which are curated limited time events.
