Can Halo 3 Outsell Super Mario Bros. 3?

I think there's more than a chance. Mario Galaxy may not perform as well as what people expect. The industry, especially at least Nintendo, is changing rapidly. Traditional games on the Wii, while still selling well, aren't doing the pants exploding numbers people have been expecting of a console that's taken the world by storm. I have a feeling the less traditional games are going to be the ones to really take off in this generation for Wii. Such as Wii Fit.

Of course I could be wrong. I'm not stupid enough to bet against a Mario game.

Mario Galaxy will sell 15-18 million worldwide

Halo 3 will best it in the U.S.

In the neighborhood of 11 million.

Not including red ring system replacements?? I ask because PSone had insanely high sales, but mostly due to system replacement. I will never forget having to replace mine twice...nor will everyone I knew.

SMB3 can only be defeated by another game that hits the right balance in everything.

Games have only hit one or the other ever since. Unfortunately.

I doubt that. It looks too much like the lovechild of SM64 and SMSunshine (with SMB3 suits tacked on), and not SMB and SMW or SMB3, which would actually have a real chance at outselling SMB3...

I agree that the biggest problem is Japan adding nothgint o Halo's numbers. Seriously, there are probably more posts in the Halo 3 thread than copies of Halo that will sell in Japan.

Not without selling a few million in Japan if you're speaking in terms of worldwide sales.
SMB3 sold 7.5m either in the US or NA (not sure) so it's possible; The GTAs are close to that.

No. Wishful thinking. Unless most Xbox owners have nothing else left to play. Or more casuals get their hands on it.

What? Unlike SMB3, where suits simply granted Mario additional abilities, the suits in Super Mario Galaxy actually have levels designed around them. You can't scale the honeycomb on the bee stage without the bee suit, for example. The only comparable suits in SMB3 would be the Frog Suit or Kuribo's Shoe, and even then they're not *required* for traversal of the level. In fact, the suits in SMG are far more analogous to Mario's caps in Super Mario 64 -- they merely retain the charm of the suits from SMB3. Designing whole levels around the *new* suits seems *hardly* "tacked on."

Besides, what exactly does a "lovechild of SM64 and Super Mario Sunshine" entail?

can it happen? yes. Will it happen? Hell No.

No, it can't happen. It's virtually impossible for everyone who owns a 360 to buy Halo 3, and for the game itself to move another 4 million consoles or so.

I think it has a chance to break the 10,000,000 mark by the end of the 360's life cycle, but that would be enough of a challenge considering the circumstances the 360's install base faces compared to the NES.

Halo 3 has yet to surpass Halo 2 numbers, and even then it doesn't even come close to the colossus that is GTA. I would say that GTA4 has a bigger chance of coming close to SMB3 than Halo 3.

shane told me about this thread when i was driving him home from the arctic monkeys concert tonight and i could not stop laughing for like five minutes.

GAF, you're beautiful.

What the hell guys. If we're counting bundled games and stuff Tetris is the clear console+handheld winner at about 30 million units, and probably something like Minesweeper or Hearts would win overall because PC gaming is a pretty vast market, even if it's not always as profitable as the console one.

I think Solitare is the best-selling game of all time.

Well, it's debatably the best-selling but is probably the most widely distributed.

Edit: Whoa, Mariah Carey banned?

Can those still be beaten without those suits? If not, then it's like SM64/Sunshine. SMB3 didn't do that. I'm not getting my hopes up here. I don't want to be let down.

Their lovechild forces us to collect stars and shines and other things we shouldn't have to do to play Mario. I'd like to know WHY they still insist on using star/shine collecting. I'm so tired of collect-a-thons.

Judging by the videos, no, the bee stage can't be completed without the bee suit, although TSR mentioned that you can circumvent some flying portions by wall-hopping (this game will be fantastic for sequence breakers and speedrunners). Other classic power-ups make a return and certainly won't be necessary -- the Super Mushroom, the Starman, and the Fireflower are some examples.

As for your second point: uh, what? It's the end of a level. Collecting a star is the 3D equivalent of zipping down a flag pole or crossing a finish line. What, would you prefer literally having flagpoles arbitrarily placed in three-dimensional fields? Calling it a "collect-a-thon" is disingenuous at best: a "collect-a-thon" in a video game suggests a means to an end, not an end in itself. Completing levels -- aka acquiring stars -- doesn't constitute a series of collect-a-thons; collecting red coins and blue coins can be considered "collect-a-thons," but thus far haven't been seen anywhere in Super Mario Galaxy.

Really, you're reaching so far here I'm afraid you might strain a muscle.

I assume we will be collecting stars or shines again because the last two games abused it, with pleasure, and now I see stars in this one too.

I'd like to be wrong, though.

New Super Mario Bros is probabaly your best shot to beat the record.

Bah, if you're gonna include the discount priced handheld games you might as well in clude Bejeweled which has, almost assuredly, broken the SMB3 record...maybe twice.

Really, it's not even something that can be debated.

Microsoft is only competing in 2 of the 3 major markets. So no not even close

yep. Not gonna happen.

And why are people throwing handheld games in here, never see the point of comparing a platform MS dont recognise as a competitor (which is true).

Of all the home consoles, Halo 3 will be amoung the top 3 best selling games (this gen). Halo has amazing legs, it will sell until the nexy xbox is released

Couldn't have said it better. Not to diminish how well it will sell, but the numbers it's competing against are bullshit high.

Counting bundles, the original Super Mario Bros broke 40 million.

Will it?

No.

In fact, it won't even scratch it.

And that comment about Halo being more appealing to normal people than Mario is laughable.

Anyway, as stated already, Halo 2 sold 8 million copies. Mario 3 sold 18 million.

That being said, I bet Halo 3 outsells Halo 2 by quite a bit. It'll probably reach 10 million at least, and then level off shortly after that.

LMAO at the OP for creating this thread and the never ending Halo 3 over hype getting to peoples heads :lol.

Completely agreed. I am new to this forum and all, but I thought stupid threads like these should be locked by now? You love Halo, we get it. But it is a FIRST PERSON SHOOTER for mario's sake. Now maybe if every teenager in the United States buys a copy it might have a chance.

GB Tetris laughs at Bejeweled. :lol

No.

Seriously, I think it'll be tough to hit even 10 million for Halo 3 but we'll see I guess. Also, Nintendogs was at 14.79 million at june and is still selling in the west. I think that Nintendogs is far more likely to hit those numbers (even though it may or may not have sold a bunch through pack-ins I don't know for sure). Then of course there is New Super Mario Bros. and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl who are already above 10 million (NSMB even at 10.5 m at june) which Halo 3 need to beat first this generation (and there are 3 more DS games that has a good change of outselling Halo 3 depending on how close it comes to 10 million). And of course this doesn't include sure hits like GTA, Galaxy, Brawl, Mario Kart etc who will sell a ton too..
